After running for 40 days the centrifuge finally sits silent. A few hundred parts not designed to do what I made it do, worked better than I ever thought it would. When I first built it, it was built to hopefully make it through 1 eight day run. It lasted 4 planned run and 1 unplanned run. Now it's time to crunch the Numbers. As I analyze the last set of samples, the check of the light source uncovered that the 475 and 660 nm LEDs burned out in the B3 tube. The second picture shows the results. The two sets of 3 plants both came from the control group. Starting run number 4 of the plant centrifuge experiment. I have a question for researchers out there. I messed up 24 samples the last experiment. So if this one goes well I should have 72 samples instead of 96. Should I go for a 5th run to make up for the lost samples or just collect the data from the 72 samples alone? What are your Thoughts. This is a demonstration of how the heat gun affects the speed of the centrifuge. I use an LED to monitor the speed. It flickers when it is within the margin of error. 55 rpm +-1. I solved the mystery of why heating up the air in the environmental control tent caused the centrifuge to speed up. I was using a heat gun on the same circuit as the centrifuge. I calibrated the centrifuge while I was running the heat gun. So when I turned off the heat gun, the centrifuge sped up. I found this out because I needed to help the normal heater along because the temp in the lab dropped more than normal. I turned on the heat gun and the speed dropped by 1-3 rpms. Durring the pause between experiment runs I dissected the slip ring to see why it was catching. The last pic shows one of the rings is darker than the other. It seems the gold plating wore on the ring. Not sure why. 2nd round of tests are over with very similar results. The first round had the test plants average a length13% shorter but with a mass 6% higher than control. The second round shows a 6% reduction in #length and 5% increase in #mass over control. The final numbers that will count is the combined averages of each test. I was not able to upload all the #plant pics due to 10 pic limit. The first 4 images are of the #test group, while the second 4 images are the control. The slip ring that allows for #electricity to be fed to the lights while the #centrifuge spins is starting to wear out. You can see it in the way the wires are starting to shake.
