i'm actually obsessed with contemporary-set retellings of tragedies because you are generally less able to get away with the deaths, which are so often the obvious hallmark. if you're putting the tragedy in the modern day, you have to question what really makes it a tragedy. what's big enough that it is as tragic as everyone dying? what choices and what inevitabilities have to be put into motion? how are you going to get that same, culminating emotional impact without that final, obvious representation of loss? you've got to trace the themes and draw them out and there, that's what you have to work with now, nuances and subtleties your only building material, delicate and pliable yet so, so solid, lying across your palms. what ends can you fashion it into that hold the same gravity? what layers will you wrap it in to get it there? the end must be new, but it must also be old
