Locked up in a hotel for 45 days, Joel, a lonely man who has been kicked around by life, is just looking for someone who can mend his heart, in a world where love is defined by shallowness and meaningless rules.

When you got together with Joel, you did your best not to come off as the heiress that you are. Sometimes you felt ashamed of the money your family had, not because you were spoiled, but because of how much your family had. You grew up privileged, in a vast house your parents had built, attended private schools, and did plenty of extracurricular activities to keep you busy, which earned you a chair in the Boston Symphony, where you played the violin.

Your father was a seventh-generation architect who worked for Disney, designing hotels and extravagant homes. Your mother owned a floral and tea shop, where you spent your summer mornings making arrangements and taking tea orders. Your parents made sure you did your chores and instilled the value of a dollar. You just tried to hide just how much you were worth.

When the first holiday season came around for you and Joel to spend together, your parents had urged you to bring Joel to your family's Chateau in France for the New Year. He had met your parents when they came to visit for Thanksgiving. Joel knew your parents had money after meeting them and hearing your dad talk about the latest Disney design, and your mother gifted you a new Fable England fox-embroidered purse for a late birthday.

Joel, Sarah, Ellie, Tommy, and your best friend since childhood, Hollis, on a private plane rented by your family. It had been luxurious, according to Tommy. The drive from the airport to the chateau took only 45 minutes. Joel had grown silent when you had entered the gates, your stomach dropping when you felt your family's wealth was coming forward.

That night, after you and Joel had settled into the Hunters Lodge, Joel had assured you he didn’t judge you, but wished you had felt comfortable telling him more about your family. Telling you, you should be proud of the work your family does, and be proud of who you are. He was proud of all that you accomplished in your 30-plus years.

It was that time of year again, when all your family got together with their friends as well to bring in the New Year together. This year, Ellie invited her fiancé, Dina, while Sarah invited her boyfriend, Walter. Hollis' boyfriend Collin had flown in with his band and was playing acoustic covers and originals. You and Joel had flown in early to spend Christmas at the chateau. It had been beautiful, with the snow covering the grounds.

Joel was dressed in a navy long-sleeve button-up with the sleeves rolled up to the elbows, and black slacks with his dress shoes. You wore a dark navy celestial tulle dress and silver heels to match. You sat together with Joel in the oversized lounge, listening to Collin’s band perform, sipping on champagne for you and beer for Joel.

“What goals are you setting going into the new year?” Joel pulled your bare legs over his lap, where he ran his thumb up and down your shin. You took a moment to think about what you wanted in 2026, especially with Joel.

“I want to read more, learn to play the drums, and explore more places with you.” You kissed Joel on the chin. “What about you? What are your goals?” You moved your upper body to face Joel.

“I think I want to read more as well, work less, and spend more time as a family.” Joel took a pull from his beer as he smiled at you. Smiling, you kissed Joel again, earning a whistle from Hollis across the room, making both you and Joel laugh into the kiss.

Collins' band had stopped playing, and all was quiet, except for the hushed voices in the first grand living room. Your father yelled one more minute, earning a cheer from everyone. You scooted in closer to Joel as Hollis and Collin made their way over, with Dina, Ellie, Sarah, and Walter. Your mother topped off your champagne along with Dina, Hollis, and Sarah’s.

You thought about all the things you and Joel had achieved in the year, from moving into your fixer-upper to saying I do a few short months ago. It had been a fantastic year, and by the looks of it, the coming year was going to be great as well, as long as you had Joel and your family by your side.

“5….4….3….2….1 Happy New Year!” Joel put his hand on your chin and pulled you in for a kiss. You laughed into it when Ellie made a disgusted sound. You pulled away to see Joel smiling at you, his eyes filled with such love. You couldn’t wait for the adventure the new year would bring.
