Never forget what they took from us.
For those asking how it compares today
and also
Mid-year 2026 update (this is without tax):
Just to round out the comparison.
Fic idea I was struck with the other day and keep thinking about: a Vulcan adopts a cat.
Still thinking about this, even though Iâm not writing the fic!
This Vulcan, Iâm calling her TâPen, goes to a shelter and gets a cat, and the shelter employees are like, a bit weirded out? But obviously theyâre going to give her a cat, I mean, sheâs a Vulcan, sheâs Super Responsible, she takes all the pamphlets and listens attentively to all the advice the shelter employees give her, even though it is obvious she researched a lot on her own.
Then TâPen asks the shelter folks what she should name the cat and runs into That Thing Humans Do Where They Confound a Vulcan With Their Weird Ways
Shelter Employee 1: oh, you can name a cat anything! Thatâs whatâs great! People names, common nouns, whole phrases.
Shelter Employee 2: yeah, nothing sounds weird on a cat. Everything from Chad to Cupboard is fair game.
SE 1: yeah, I mean, you canât call a dog Chad, that would be weird
SE 2: I wouldnât fuckinâ trust anyone who named their dog Chad
SE 1: oh word
TâPen:âĻ.
TâPen: âĻ.fascinating.
Later, in the interest of furthering her anthropological study of Earth, TâPen has a houseparty and she invites her coworkers, many of whom are human, but others which are aliens, and are fascinated by TâPenâs cat
Vulcan Co-worker: TâPen, what have you named this small Earth feline?
TâPen: I have named him Marmalade.
Vucan co-worker: Is that not the name of a type of Terran fruit preserve? I do not understand the logic behind this choice.
TâPen: the logic is self-evident to a human.
Human Co-worker: TâPen, omg, you have a cat! Whatâs his name?
TâPen: thank you for your inquiry. His name is Marmalade
Human Co-worker: oooh! yeah, that makes sense, because heâs orange and sweet! lmao, great name
Vulcan Co-worker: âĻ
Vulcan Co-worker: âĻ.fascinating
Human: So, howâs Marmalade?
TâPen: He has the peculiar habit of walking on my workstation.
Human: Aggravating, isnât it?
TâPen: We Vulcans do not feel human emotions. However, I would prefer it if Marmalade stayed off my workstation, particularly when I am working.
Human: Get a box.
TâPen: Murdering Marmalade seems an overreaction.
Human: No, you need a box with interior dimensions approximately the same as Marmaladeâs body, and set it on the floor next to your workstation. Marmalade will sit in the box.
TâPen: Why do you believe that this will work for Marmalade?
Human: We donât know. Itâs just something cats do. If he fits, he sits.
TâPen: âĻ Fascinating.
Vulcan Commander: TâPen, you are posting videos of your cat. Explain.
Tâpen: My colleagues are amused and entertained by Marmaladeâs interactions with his environment. I am amused and entertained by their reactions as reflected in the comments.
Vulcan Commander (reading):Â âU haz done me a startleâ?
TâPen: Some of them like to verbalize what they believe are Marmaladeâs thought processes. He is a cat, so they imagine that he does not grasp human spelling and grammar.
Vulcan Commander: âĻ Fascinating. As you were. (signs off)
TâPen (returning to her meal): Now I can haz lunch.
I need more people to write more bits of this.
Marmalade: Meow. *nudges food bowl and looks expectantly*
TâPen: You have just eaten. Logic dictates that you should not yet be hungry.
Marmalade: Meeooowww!
TâPen: I must remember that cats do not adhere to the dictates of logic, and adjust accordingly. However, I will not give you more food right now as that would be unhealthful.
Marmalade: *sad cat eyes*
TâPen: You attempt to appeal to my emotional side, however you will find that your attempts will be fruitless.
TâPen:âĻI am speaking to an animal who cannot understand linguistic communication. The catâs illogical nature seems to be having a deleterious affect on my own. Fascinating.
Vulcan Coworker: T'Pen, I have noticed that you have ceased allowing Marmalade into the dining room during what the humans call âdinner partiesâ. May I inquire as to why that is?
T'Pen: I have noticed that among Marmaladeâs curious habitual instincts is the desire to knock over glassware, including and especially when they are filled with liquid. Despite my attempts to train him out of this habit, I have found it unsuccessful. When I sought advice from my human coworkers, they simply said that all cats have this peculiarity, and thus advised I leave him in a separate part of the building when such events are to be held.
Marmalade, pawing at a see-through door: *Mreeeowwww!*
T'Pen: Despite this arrangement, he continues to loiter by the door in the apparent hope to, quote, âguilt-trip meâ into allowing him complete access to all of the faculties of my domain.
Vulcan Coworker: Fascinating.
T'Pen: I have observed that my domestic feline demonstrates a pattern of attempting to consume processed petroleum products despite being said productsâ indigestibility by any form of Terran fauna. While Marmalade demonstrates a high level of problem-solving and kinetic sense in other respects, such as locating and extracting treats, I am concerned that this habit reflects a fundamental lack of cognitive capacity.
Vet: âĻ.Your cat chews on plastic so youâre worried that heâs an idiot?
T'Pen: As a Vulcan, I do not âworryâ. I merely note possible negative situations and seek expert information on how best to approach them. (pause). That is an adequate rephrasing, yes.
Vet: Heâs fine. Donât let him eat plastic.
T'Pen: Are those two statements not contradictory?
Vet: Itâs normal for cats to want to chew on plastic but you still shouldnât let them. At least, not on regular household plastics. I can direct you to a few places to acquire cat-safe chew toys.
T'Pen: Fascinating.

Protip you can do this with writing too
[Image description: a two-panel comic titled âMy Art Evolutionâ. In the first panel, labeled âPastâ, a beelike person frowns at a drawing of a happy sun and says âOh no. It isnât perfect no one can ever see thisâ. In the right panel, labeled âPresentâ, the person holds up the same drawing, and with a sly jokester expression (which includes a nose), says âHe he. Who wants to see my new eye crimeâ. /End description.]
Since my beloved wife got a breast reduction we have a nightly ritual where I smear goop (anti-scar cream) on their incision lines. The first goop we had was from the surgeon's office and it was a silicone base that was pretty nice, but did have a tendency to build up a residue afterward. We asked the office about buying more and they pretty much said to get whatever as long as we were getting something on it. They also told us theirs was a "spendy" $50 which we didn't think was that bad.
So my wife bought a different product ($30) and we were both put out that it came in such a small tube for the price. We decided we'd use it up before going back and getting the first goop again, even if it was more expensive. We did like that the small tube didn't have any residue afterward, but for the price we paid it still seemed like a rip off.
We have been. So wrong.
The tube has appeared like it should be empty for weeks. Yet every night, we convene in the bathroom for nightly goop. I hold out my finger and my wife squeezes the tube. Every night, there is enough.
When we first thought it was almost done we bought another tube. Even if it didn't last as long we liked that there wasn't a residue with it. But now that the first one still isn't empty it's clearly very good bang for our buck, because it is frankly staggering both of us that we still keep getting more out of what appears to be an empty tube.
Early on I joked it was a Hanukkah miracle but at this point eight days was over last month and we're gonna have to make a new holiday to liken this phenomenon to because this is the energizer bunny of goop.
Every night now we wait with bated breath to see if this is finally the end of its supply. Every night, there is plenty. I told my wife it would be funny if I were secretly filling it a little bit to keep a long prank going but honestly the opening is so goddamn tiny that we couldn't possibly fill it on our own. We shall see when it's reign ends, but either way, we definitely got our money's worth.
It has finally run out, for realsies.
I checked the purchase date. We bought it in May, it lasted until August. What a champion goop. Incredible longevity. Well worth the money.
there was a great study a few years that went into the whole "ppl online are bigger jerks than irl cuz theres a virtual wall and no repercussions" and the researchers were expecting to see that be the case but it turns out that people who were really angry or argumentative online were also found to just be assholes in person and people who were pretty patient and nice online were found to be patient and nice in real person as well
and it just debunked that whole cynical idea that people will naturally be mean if theres no punishment for it
source another source
the researchers found that being online didnt make people more hostile, but that being online allowed already hostile people to dominate forum conversations, and the less aggressive people were much less likely to reply or engage, ending in just the aggressive people bickering at eachother
Thereby disproving Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory.
i want a gay-coded-villain-coded hero. everything about their aesthetics says that they are evil and gay, but technically speaking their behavior is never anything less than noble and helpful, albeit in a weirdly sinister way.

So--when I was in my mid-twenties and the Disaster Ex tried to make me kill myself, the local mental hospital didn't have any beds open in the usual ward for attempted suicides.
What they did have was a single spare bed in the small, comfortable, quiet, wildly expensive facility for girls with eating disorders.
They asked each of the young women currently living there if it was acceptable that I might occupy a bed in one of the rooms for a while, just the long weekend while I was waiting for a doctor's evaluation. I hadn't been violent, I had gone with the cops without putting up any fight at all, and I was still and I was small and all those things were sufficient for me to be deemed safe. So up they sent me, to somewhere high in Western Psych, above the smells and sounds of the denser-packed wards, above where the care workers were harried and frustrated, to a gentle space with seven or eight young women in it.
I was five foot three, and I weighed about 115 pounds. I was underweight for my frame, as a fair amount of that weight was martial arts muscle; I would probably have been ten pounds heavier if I were healthy, with the amount of activity I got.
I was at least two inches shorter than pretty much every other young woman there, six or seven inches shorter than one of them, and I had at least thirty pounds on several of them. The tallest was not allowed to walk, she had to sit in a wheelchair and be pushed around, because her condition was so advanced that the motion would undo what good her hard work had done.
And over the course of the four or five days I was there, multiple of them came up to me alone to quietly tell me that I had the *perfect* body, and they wished they could be as skinny as I was. That I needed to live, because I was beautiful, and if they were as beautiful as I was, they wouldn't need to be here.
Their eyes were on me all the time, in the hours that I wasn't sleeping. I spent a lot of time sleeping, and we took our meals separately (I not needing to be monitored while I ate, and not having my food weighed), but we spent a fair amount of time sitting around in the little shared living room space, talking about movies and magazines and books we'd loved, talking about our families. I didn't talk about my family; they didn't pry.
They were all so fucking nice.
And I could have broken any one of them over my narrow knee. They each thought they were bigger than I was.
Their brains lied to them, every time they looked at a mirror. Every time they looked down at their own thighs. What they saw was not what I could see. They had bright, beautiful eyes in dark hollows, and I could count their vertebrae, could see their ribs winging when they breathed, could see the motion of every tendon on the backs of their hands.
They weren't celebrities. They weren't being paid to have particular bodies, nor were they deep in the toxic sea of having strangers take photos of them to sell to gossip rags if they stepped out of doors in old jeans. They had families and loved ones who were doing everything that they could to protect them, to uplift them and help them be healthy. They were just everyday people--a nurse, a couple of students, a couple of recent college grads, a young woman who had decided it was time to really get help because she wanted to be a mother--and still they'd been so injured by the neverending fucking deluge of body-image bullshit that they were dying of it.
That was in 2009. Things are worse now. I think about them still. I hope that they're all right.
And in case some people aren't aware: anorexia is deadly. There is a point at which your body looses the ability to digest food and you are no longer capable of improving.

reblog to give a strawberry to the person you reblogged this from
the problem with tumblr spells is all of you lil sluts are casting and not giving it time to charge so you're all casting cantrips and not 9th level death spells. everyone wants to be the one to take them down no one wants to be the one who assists
we're going to try again witha little but minimal casting
IT will happen in August of 2026. like to charge and reblog to cast but cast sparingly
Wait stop. everyone +like now and spread it a little but cast on the same day in August. lets try August 6th or something.
