This has been my main argument against "AI" from the very beginning.
OpenAI scraped the entire web. All of which had been a labor of love from humans. Wikipedia is the backbone of a lot of LLMs, and that was volunteer human labor. They stole it and now they're selling it back to us.
And worse, they're trying to destroy the free sources that they stole from. It's destruction of human knowledge on an unprecedented scale. The burning of the library of Alexandria has nothing on this.

I heavily recommend getting very good at spotting Meta glasses. Like I'm talking so good all you need is a glance. Otherwise, I would go about public life bearing in mind that more and more people are wearing expensive camera glasses that can record you without you realizing.
Learn how to identify smart glasses through visual cues, behavioral patterns, and recording indicators. Handle privacy concerns with this pr
Ready or not, the smart glasses future is upon us.
With smart glasses, there are concerns around being recorded. Fortunately, you can watch for indicator lights and certain movements as a way
Here are some basic primers. If someone is wearing what look like Meta glasses, they usually have a small circular camera in the outer corners of the lenses, like the one on your phone.
I would also regularly check their own product pages so you're on top of what the models look like. They tend to have larger frames, but come in a variety of shapes and colors.
Shop every style. Every color. Prices from $299 to $499. Browse Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta AI glasses and sunglasses to find your pair.
The creator of Nearby Glasses made the app after reading 404 Media's coverage of how people are using Meta's Ray-Bans smartglasses to film p
A new hobbyist developed app warns if people nearby may be wearing smart glasses, such as Meta’s Ray-Ban glasses, which stalkers and harassers have repeatedly used to film people without their knowledge or consent. The app scans for smart glasses’ distinctive Bluetooth signatures and sends a push alert if it detects a potential pair of glasses in the local area.
The app comes as companies such as Meta continue to add AI-powered features to their glasses. Earlier this month The New York Times reported Meta was working on adding facial recognition to its smart glasses. “Name Tag,” as the feature is called, would let smart glasses wearers identify people and get information about them from Meta's AI assistant, the report said.
I am against Meta and everything they stand for but I’m curious if peoples’ opinions would change about someone wearing them as a disability aid?
Not necessarily, because Meta has military contracts (source 1, source 2, source 3), is testing surveillance tech on their own employees and their customers (source 4, source 5), and there are at least two class action lawsuits against them for privacy violations (source 6, source 7, source 8). There is also some sketchy stuff about workers being forced to review material, which may or may not be used without the customer's permission, that is sensitive, graphic, and/or pornographic (source 9).
The American Foundation for the Blind has said that "The Ray-Ban Meta glasses are an accessibility tool only by coincidence. That makes them more affordable and, in many ways, unaware of the needs of users with reduced vision" although they do have seemingly positive views on Meta Glasses as a whole. (source 10). It also seems like their marketing push as accessibility devices began last year (source 11).
But to add even more into the nonsense, Meta is now toying around with adding a "limit" to the functionality of their glasses unless their users pay for more access (source 12). AND, as stated above, Meta has officially added facial recognition code in their glasses and only admitted it after being called out, which is basically the death of privacy as we know it (source 13, source 14, source 15). And oh look another lawsuit because of it (source 16) THAT THEY LOST (source 17)!
Long story short: I don't begrudge someone using them as a disability aid overall, but ultimately both their privacy and other people's privacy are being disregarded by Meta and that is not and should not be acceptable by any means.
I understand there is no ethical consumption under capitalism but there is a level of personal responsibility someone has to take when using them if they truly truly need them, such as opting out of sharing information, not filming strangers without permission, not posting footage of strangers online, opting out of facial recognition if possible, etc.
Disabled people deserve assistive technology AND privacy rights, and Meta is not the solution.
I went looking for tips on how to defeat facial recognition, but it seems that these privacy-invading spy devices are getting much better at seeing through makeup, unusual haircuts, sunglasses, and even masks, and are becoming ever more popular with cops and ICE types
some info on the overall tech:
best bet is complete facial coverage, but the arms race between surveillance and privacy means every new technique to combat spyware means the Metas of the world come up with answers like infrared optics that can see through fabric

For disability pride I'd like to talk about how people with headache disorders are failed by both doctors and insurance companies so much, it's standard to be put on meds with a known low probability of working and terrible side effects for no reason other than bc CGRP inhibitors are expensive. You often have to fail several cheaper medications before you can get on the ones that actually work long-term for the largest % of people.
We also often have headache-specific rescue meds like triptans restricted and rationed which, when we cannot access proper preventatives, puts especially those us of with chronic headaches at risk of overusing OTC painkillers like paracetamol or ibuprofen instead, or—depending on how bad the headaches are—folks might even resort to street drugs to numb the pain.
Migraine specially is one of the most common health conditions. Cluster headaches are considered to be the most painful chronic pain condition. Yet, most of the time, patients with these & similar conditions do not receive the medical care they'd need to properly manage their pain, and are often dismissived as overdramatic, too sensitive, "just stressed" or drug-seeking.
Hell, many people with headache disorders don't even know that preventives & abortives are an option. Because they're told by everyone including their doctors that they just need to improve their lifestyle — stuff like drink more water, lose weight, watch what you eat, reduce your stress, get enough sleep. Which, as you know if you have one, is all very hard to do with an unmedicated chronic pain condition.
There are in fact lots of options that work for many people. My chronic cluster headaches are completely managed with a specific blood pressure medication (verapamil) and a CGRP inhibitor. Down from an average of 16 attacks per month and up to 3 per day during my last cluster period/bout to 0-2 a month since the verapamil started working. Proper meds can genuinely change your life.
also adding that it seems not all doctors are even aware of triptans. It wasn't until I got to the Neurologist and I listed all the medications I *had* tried to use, that he was like "??? you haven't tried triptans??" as if it should have been the first thing we did.
in grade 12 we were reading romeo and juliet and we were at the romantic-ass balcony scene and this hot girl in the class volunteered to read juliet’s parts and i put up my hand to volunteer for another part and the teacher goes ‘oh do you want to be the nurse, amanda?’ and i was like ‘no i wanna be romeo’ and the hot girl swiveled around in her seat to give me a Look™
she and i later ended up making out at a bunch of parties in university lmfao
in retrospect this moment was absolutely pivotal to my butch awakening but it was also just a lesbian power move
I too got a girlfriend over this play. In grade 10, I was reading the balcony scene to study with two other people (one guy and one beautiful girl) and I insisted point blank I had to read as romeo, because he had the most lines and I’m a dramatic little shit.
So the other two in my group are used to my antics by now. We’re all friends, so the pair of them decide that the one guy in our group gets to be the nurse. Now, my Juliet and I have been friends for a couple months by this point, so I decide to be a little more dramatic.
We put Juliet on a spinny chair, and pump it up as tall as it goes, and my baby, closeted lesbian ass crouches on the floor, ready to be as melodramatic as possible. Like, I’m about to do a rendition that makes William himself walk into the class and tell me to take it back a notch or twelve.
And then I look up.
And holy shit.
There she is, Juliet, haloed in the worst fluorescent light known to mortals across the globe. Light just streaming down around her, that weird off-green colour that it always is. And she’s the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen. My little gay soul is barely holding on as the words barely leave my lips, breathlessly. “But soft… what light from yonder window breaks?”
And Juliet was the sun. Romeo was not exaggerating that line at all.
Juliet and I have also been together for more than 4 years now. She’s every bit as spectacular as she was when I was a lovestruck teenage Romeo, kneeling on the yellowed linoleum floor of second block english.

Good. One of the things I love about the USA is that we have birthright citizenship. People come here for better chances and better lives. That's the whole fucking point.
It's really fucking telling, the people you see freaking out about this.
I've seen people online saying we should be pregnancy testing "at the southern border," of course, just in case someone is trying to smuggle a foetus in.
I can't even put into words the fucking rage.
Not to mention the fact that for many of us, our families that have been in the USA for 10 generations weren’t actually considered US citizens until a few generations ago. The 14th Amendment established African American freedmen and Black people born in the U.S. as citizens in 1868—several years after emancipation—and it took a couple more years for the Naturalization Act of 1870 to actually create legislation to begin a formal citizenship process. Last month was the 102nd anniversary of the Indian Citizenship Act that granted birthright citizenship to all indigenous Americans born within U.S. borders without stripping them of their tribal rights and lands. For decades Asian people born in the U.S had ever-changing legislation in regard to their citizenship, based on which nation their families immigrated from, until the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965. Latino people have been living in the U.S. as citizens technically since the U.S. acquired the land from Mexico with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1850, but it didn’t protect them from horrible discriminatory practices and prejudices based on their original nationality unfortunately—and it hasn’t stopped being deemed a political issue for ignorant people since.
Let there be no peace or stability for white supremacist assholes. Remind them they are stuck in the same idiotic thought processes that trapped their ancestors generations ago too.
