It feels as if I have risen after being asleep for years
Kathrin Marchenko on Instagram
This is important.
Itâs not a âloopholeâ itâs explicit within the text of the amendment
âLoopholeâ lmfao like itâs a fucking accident, like it wasnât purposefully structured to reclaim and expand a source of free labor
We never outlawed slavery in America. We simply transferred ownership of slaves from individual landowners to the government and large corporations.
Other fun facts about prison labor corporations:
-Federal and state-run prisons usually pay their slaves minimum wage; some states, however, like Colorado, pay $2/hour.
-Private prisons pay $.17-.50/hour. The highest paying private prison is in Tennessee, which pays $.50/hour for âhighly-skilled labor.â
-You think that hasnât affected wages in the US? You think that hasnât removed manufacturing jobs from the economy?
-Companies that contract with private prisons for their slave labor include: IBM, Boeing, Motorola, Microsoft, AT&T, Wireless, Texas Instrument, Dell, Compaq, Honeywell, Hewlett-Packard, Nortel, Lucent Technologies, 3Com, Intel, Northern Telecom, TWA, Nordstromâs, Revlon, Macyâs, Pierre Cardin, Target Stores. Many, many products that say âMade in USAâ were made in prison.
-Private prisons often have quotas with the states, wherein the states contractually guarantee that they will provide a certain number of prisoners to fill the beds of a private prison, and if they donât then they owe the private prison millions of dollars. Iâm not making this up. It happened in Colorado after they legalized weed.
-States have a financial incentive to lock up their citizens.
-All of the above corporations have a financial incentive to see citizens get locked up.
-This is why Jeff Sessions is going after weed. The prison industrial complex needs slaves.
-To the shock of absolutely no one, private prisons have even more disparate racial demographics than federal/state prisons.
-Where do you think they send undocumented immigrants who have been rounded up? Thatâs right, private prisons. Thatâs why so many of them are in the South. So they take immigrants who are earning some kind of comparable wage and paying income tax to the government, and put them in prison where the wages are absurdly depressed and the prison pays virtually nothing in taxes.
-Oh yeah: private prisons pay virtually nothing in taxes. Because they technically manage real estate (prison as housing), they get all sorts of tax breaks and subsidies.
Tl;dr the prison industrial complex removes jobs from the economy, depresses wages, cheats the tax system, and ENSLAVES PEOPLE, usually people of color.

In case u didnât know
FBI investigating University of Maryland stabbing as a hate crime
The FBI is evaluating whether a white student suspected of fatally stabbing a black student visiting the University of Maryland campus should be tried for a hate crime, police said according to CNN.
On Sunday, University of Maryland Police Chief David Mitchell told reporters that 23-year-old Richard Wilbur Collins III had been walking on campus with two friends early Saturday morning when the suspect approached âyelling â in fact perhaps screaming is one description.â
â[Collins] then said step left, step left if you know whatâs good for you,â according to Mitchell. The suspect â 22-year-old Sean Christopher Urbanski â refused, and then stabbed Collins in the chest with a knife.Â
Collins was transported to Prince Georgeâs County Shock Trauma, where he was declared dead.
Urbanski, a University of Maryland student, had belonged to a Facebook group called âAlt Reich.â Read more (5/22/17)

Meanwhile, neoliberals keep giving soft-core white supremacists like Tomi Lahren and Glenn Beck national platforms to spew their hatred, just to show everyone how âenlightenedâ and âtolerantâ they think they are.
SMH. White nationalists are dangerous and racism kills. Literally. White nationalists need to be opposed, resisted and prosecuted, not given a worldwide stage to move the Overton window even further to the extreme right.
For an entire week in 1968, protesters and the Chicago police skirmished, on national television, with the whole world watching. Finally, that Wednesdayânomination dayâ15,000 people moved into Grant Park in the heart of downtown Chicago for a MOBE rally. During some speeches, a shirtless, long-haired man began to lower the American flag (planning, it was later reported, to turn it upside down in the international symbol of distress). But as he removed the flag, the police suddenly snapped. They charged into the crowd, swinging billy clubs indiscriminately, seizing demonstrators, clubbing them, and tossing them into paddy wagons. A 2008 NPR special details the way the Democratic nomination process was radically revised after the 1968 fiasco at the Chicago Convention in order to win back the droves of disgusted voters whoâd abandoned the party, and a major component of that revision was giving the people a voice in the nominating process by instituting primaries and caucuses. Had they not done this, had they not promised the American people a fair and balanced democratic primary process, the Democrats risked losing party viability and being replaced by another party that was more appealing for voters to engage with. By admitting that they have been lying about taking this promise seriously, the DNC is admitting that its party probably should have perished sometime in the 1970s. They deceived the American people into letting them remain. Prior to giving the people a voice in the nomination process, the DNC selected the Democratic nominee internally, the result of which was what provoked the 1968 riots in the first place.
The lawsuit against the Democratic Party is happening because the DNC is going back on a promise it made almost 50 years ago (via odinsblog)
