RED OCHER
Did your know that red ocher is the most common red pigment in the world? The reason for its ubiquity involves both the stars and nuclear fusion. Red ocher contains iron oxide, which requires, unsurprisingly, iron and oxygen. When a star explodes as a supernova, it produces large quantities of iron. Combine this with the most common element on Earthâoxygenâand you have an important ingredient in red ocher. Learn more about this process in Victoria Finlayâs new book, The Brilliant History of Color in Art!Â

Though not as important in the market today, Polaroid was at the center of American photography for decades. Curator Mary-Kay Lombino recently compiled some of the best images using the Polaroid camera into a book titled The Polaroid Years: Instant Photography and Experimentation.

The thing about this is that sculptures like these in art history were for the male gaze. Photoshop a phone to it and suddenly sheâs seen as vain and conceited. Thatâs why Iâm 100% for selfie culture because apparently men can gawk at women but when we realize how beautiful we are weâre suddenly full of ourselvesâŚ
Girls, donât let anyone tell you that loving yourself is vanity.
âYou painted a naked woman because you enjoyed looking at her, put a mirror in her hand and you called the painting âVanity,â thus morally condemning the woman whose nakedness you had depicted for you own pleasure.â â John Berger, Ways of Seeing
