Things were different.
He didnât know how, but they were.
Respawn had never been painful. Sure, it was nerve wracking the first time, and almost all mercenaries who popped back into existence were quick to throw up. All had an existential crisis or two coming to realize that death was indeed a thing they would face. More than once, they would face it, and more than once would they have to physically push it from mind if they wanted to keep any semblance of sanity.
The difference this time was, the man that suddenly came to consciousness inside REDâs corpse freezer knew he shouldnât be there. Knew Respawn had been turned off, knew heâd been fired. Knew exactly what had happened that led up to his ultimate demise.
Knew who was behind it too.

Eight seconds later, Lutherâs shaking out his hand with a self-satisfied expression as Toniâs nose starts leaking blood onto the floor. He was hoping itâd be easy, but this easy? That has to be divine providence or something.
No telling how long the guyâs going to be out, though, so he shouldnât mess around. The body bagâs unzipped and laid out on the floor of the ex-Spyâs room, and with a little finagling, he fits Toni into it and zips it up.
From there, the unconscious manâs tossed up onto Lutherâs shoulder like a bag of flour, and he starts making his way through the facility towards the medical bay and, more importantly, the freezer heâs asked Maddy to keep clear for him. Being disturbed while heâs closing this one out isnât something heâs interested in.
Thereâs a lot that could be said, itâs true. Lutherâs got another rant and a half in him, but this has already gone on (and gotten loud) enough. The badly-veiled request only makes him pause for a moment as he levels the gun at Toniâs head.
âIf I was gonna waste him, do you think Iâd tell the dead guy? Fuck you, Tone.â
BOOM.

âNo. They donât hire nuns and priests. But itâs funny, isnât it? How youâre the only one I have this fucking problem with.â He folds his arms, watching as the brutalized man swings back and forth on his hook. âEverybody else can fuckinâ act like a civilized human being. Maybe theyâve got no values but theyâre at least fuckinâ smart enough to follow the fuckinâ rules.â
Wow, thatâs a lot of bile. Maybe Luther was more put off by all this unpleasantness than he let on⌠or maybe he really is a Brutal now. Either way, heâs not done talking. âBut this⌠fucking⌠animal doesnât want to control himself. He wants to be a piece of shit. He wants to do whatever the fuck he wants, and if somebody tells him not to, he acts like itâs their fault when he fucking acts out.â Luther steps further away. Grabs the shotgun.
âI gave you more chances than you deserved, Antoine. I fuckinâ looked the other way when I shouldnât have and I paid the cost. All you had to do was stay in fucking line and none of this would have happened.â The boltâs pulled back, locking open and letting a shell rise upwards enough that when he pulls the trigger, itâll slide right into the chamber and discharge.
âDisobeying the rules, getting in fights with civilians, brutalizing the other fucking mercs in your free time? Who the fuck do you think you are? You thought you were gonna get away with it, or does your tiny little fuckinâ wine-soaked brain not understand the idea of restraint?â
Spyâs got so many things to say, he canât even begin to list them as they pop up. How the rules were stupid, how the war was pointless. How Luther went above and beyond what he needed to, how this was all a waste of time.
But the only thing he can think of is if Sniperâs next. Granted, heâs not done anything else, not nearly what Antoine had done. Not had any other marks on record other than friendship with a BLU. Would they still go after him if they dealt with the main problem mercenary? Signs pointed to no, but... Would he go above and beyond with this too? Maybe he wasnât. Maybe this was bare minimum, and Toni really was as garbage as Luther said.
âGuess I wasnât... as sneaky as I thought.â
The cameras around bases were old, he had technology that far surpassed the average man, and still he got caught. When heâd been younger, heâd been better without all that tech. It had made him lazy, made him sloppy. The worst thing a spy could do was get caught and kept alive, but at least Luther wasnât trying to extract information. He was just as ready as Antoine was to get it over with.
Although...
âThough, for the record. That RED isnât... as smart as youâd think.â
Sniper had a lot to lose. Toni didnât.
âWith your... problem mercenary out of the picture.. I doubt heâll cause problems.â
Donât touch him. Please.

The laugh that comes out of the Pyro is long, heartfelt and entirely uncharacteristic. He actually has to step away, mirth rising from a chuckle to a surprisingly full-chested âheh heh ha ha ha haâ before it starts dying off. He shakes his head, looks at Toni⌠starts laughing again, wiping his eyes and running a hand through his hair. Once he does get himself under controlâŚ
âYou know what, Tonâ? If you werenât so fucking stupid Iâd respect that. It takes some serious fuckinâ nerve to be staring into your own grave and still be acting like a shitty little kid who never learned the consequences of his fuckinâ actions.â He steps back over, giving him a self-satisfied look before driving a knee into Toniâs gut. âSomewhere in France thereâs a Mrs. Beurecard who has fuckinâ failed as a mother, you know that?â
Leaving the Spy swinging like a bloody pinata, Luther finally takes a couple steps back, clearing his throat. âWeâre here, Toni, because I was right about you. Youâre a piece of shit. You were always a piece of shit.â
Heâs sure he actually feels something crunch as Luther knees him. Another hissing intake of air, another cheek bitten bloody raw to keep from crying out. Lutherâs having the time of his life, but Toni refuses to give him the satisfaction of hearing it. It might be stupid, it might be petty and drag things out, but Luther was right about more than just Toniâs character. He had no respect, least of all the animal in front of him.
Cursing in french through struggled breaths, feet scrabble to stop the swinging lest he throw up right then and there.Â
âFine -- you want a fucking medal?â
He canât help it, the whole situation is frustrating. Luther had always boasted about not dragging things out, shoot first and forget the questions. But this far in, with no way or choice to defend himself, Toni had to be honest. He was ready for it to be over with. He canât breathe, but forces out words anyway.
âI fucking. Know that. They donât -- hire -- nuns and priests. Donât be -- donât be surprised...that you were right. Asshole.â

Being disturbed while heâs closing this one out isnât something heâs interested in.
âYâknow, I remember telling you-â The shoe connects with his chest, and the rest of his sentence turns into a harsh puff of air as he takes half a step back. Thereâs a pause, an inhale. A chuckle. âAll right. Guess youâre still fuckinâ ornery. Letâs see what we can do about that, eh?â
Itâs not quite a smile Lutherâs wearing as he lays into Toni. Sure, the corners of his mouth curl up a little when a particularly solid blow lands, but itâs not like heâs grinning like itâs his birthday or anything⌠even if he kinda feels like it is. This has been such a long time coming he was beginning to wonder if Admin were even going to let it happen at all.
Thump. The hook slowly stops swinging with that last blow, and Luther rubs his knuckles appreciatively, fixing Toni with a level stare. Heâs not even out of breath. âSo are we gonna get to business or am I gonna keep wrecking your shit? Because you are well fuckinâ deserving of a beating, Toni. I am happy to keep bashing you until youâre in a fuckinâ calmer mood.â
His shoulders hurt. His nose hurts. Fuck, everything hurts. Toniâs pretty sure Luther would continue venting his frustrations even if he did calm down. He knows heâs broken more rules than he even knows about, and to be frank, heâs not sure why this didnât happen earlier.
A small part of him wonders if Sniperâs going to get fired as well, or if thereâs anything he could do about that. Heâs fairly certain heâs not getting out of this, not with a man like Luther on his case. Maybe if it had been Pauling before her accident, he mightâve been able to convince her to report him dead and flee the country. Hell, any of the other administration mightâve been susceptible to deceit. But not him.
Wheezing still, wondering just how far he could push the Admin. Are they going to get to business? Blood is dribbling down his face, from his nose, pooling in large angry bruises beneath his shirt. He hopes heâs stained Lutherâs clothes with any of it that got loose.
âGo to hell, Murphy.â
No bite to it, no real feeling. Going through the motions, really. His lungs hurt too much for any real effort. He knows it will only get worse, but his stubborn streak would be the death of him. His mother had known it would, after all.
napalm-sunburnâ:
He laughs, nods, as heâs turning away. Unslinging his shotgun from the shoulder that didnât have Toni draped over it while he was on the way down here in the first place, setting it down on the rolling table that would normally, in these kinds of situations, have all sorts of intimidating, sharp implements.
Of course, the difference between those situations and this one is that normally an interrogator is trying to get information, and he doesnât actually want to use the instruments of torture heâs been supplied with. The fact that Luther took the time to put them all away before getting this going⌠well, it sends a message.
âYou got a real fuckinâ mouth on you.â The giant walks back over, takes a breath, and drives a fist into his prisonerâs stomach. Itâs a fine punch, too - itâs clear he has practice. The hook swings and he follows up with a second, a little higher. âHaah. Never fuckinâ liked that. No fuckinâ respect.â
Nervous green eyes follow Lutherâs every move. Watching that overkill shotgun, watching him, so calm in his element, even laugh. He has always given off an air of âget shit done, and get it done quick.â, but this... Toni realizes with a startle itâs probably the first and last time heâs seen Luther smile. First time heâs heard him laugh, first time his whole energy is... positive.
The idea that beating the shit out of him is what makes the behemoth happy turns his stomach in knots, but he grits his teeth. Luther definitely knows what heâs doing. Why wouldnât he? Admin wouldnât keep him around if he were an idiot.
The punches leave him wheezing. Lots of things to say and no breath to say them. In lieu of a gag, heâs sure Luther can appreciate the Spyâs silence.
Heâs got no interest in being brutalized, and as the hook swings back, the spy swings a foot.
It isnât as powerful as insulting him, but any form of disobedience and rebellion was good enough if it was for Luther.

Being disturbed while heâs closing this one out isnât something heâs interested in.
âMorning, shitbird.â
Oh. Oh, thatâs way worse. This isnât a semi-routine rivalry with a Medic at all. Even if he werenât throwing a jab at a seven-foot death machine, the force applied by a swing coming up from the floor without actually standing leaves a lot to be desired. Luther pulls his head back, out of the way of the punch, and responds in kind - fist colliding with Toniâs head and Toniâs head colliding with the floor.
Not enough to knock him out again, though. He needs to be awake for this. Now that Luther knows heâs up, he works quicker, unzipping the bag enough to pull the Spy out and getting his hands cuffed together. Itâs almost insulting how easily he lifts Toniâs weight, the chains clinking and rasping against the hook the Pyro dangles him from.
âAntoine Beurecard. Do you know why weâre here?â
As his head collides with the tile, Toni's sure he sees cartoonish stars. He hadn't expected it to work, but he hadn't expected to be worse off from the effort. Through a splitting headachr and hazy vision, he hears more than sees Luther working. Luther. Not Medic. Admin's attack dog.
Chains clinking, being manhandled into a standing position. Tiptoes barely brushing the floor. Guess he finally found the pasture they brought the lame horses to.
Fuck it's cold.
The answer is clear as day, however. But Toni's been a pain in Luther's ass since nearly day one. If this isn't just another warning like Luther said he'd never get, there's only one other explaination.
One eye squinting shut to try and cut down on how many Luthers there were in his vision, Antoine spits a wad of blood to the floor.
"No one showed up for your birthday party last year so you're inviting us all by force this time?"
@estabionage
Eight seconds later, Lutherâs shaking out his hand with a self-satisfied expression as Toniâs nose starts leaking blood onto the floor. He was hoping itâd be easy, but this easy? That has to be divine providence or something.

Movement. More movement. A shift in gait - maybe going up or down stairs, or a hill? Toni hears a door open. More swaying, but the soundâs changed. Tile, definitely indoors. Theyâre certainly not leaving respawn range, wherever theyâre going⌠of course, thatâs not going to matter, but Toni doesnât know that. Yet.
Another door - different door. The swishing sound of one of the medbay autodoors, as far as heâs aware. Then⌠the distinct noise of the rubber seal of the corpse freezer.
Luther shuts the door behind him. Locks it. Turns towards the many hooks meant for keeping bags just like this one off the floor while the bodies inside are in stasis, then drops it onto the freezing tiles anyway. Thereâs a pause as he considers it⌠Toni might still be out, or he might be awake and waiting for an opportunity to lash out and try to make his escape as soon as Luther unzips it.
Best to be sure.
A boot comes down in the center of the bag, heel landing somewhere around Toniâs stomach. Luther pauses, waiting for a sound. Does it again. Confident in having tenderized the soon-to-be-fired merc, he takes a knee to start unzipping the bag.
Thereâs no doubt about it, theyâre definitely inside the building. Though which one, RED or BLU, he isnât sure. Though does it matter? Thereâs got to be an explanation for this. His own medic wouldnât resort to kidnapping, and REDâs had a different MO. No real restrains and blunt force trauma were not Ludwigâs style.
Toni felt his heart rate spike, biting his tongue till it bled to keep quiet as the treatment turns brutal. Heâs sure they heard his strangled choke of air, sure they know heâs awake by now. Sure they can hear him struggling to breathe through a broken nose and possibly broken ribs. The scrapes and bruises heâs sure to have in an hour donât matter, all that matters is finding out just what the hell is going on.
And if they donât know, a surging fist as soon as he sees light would prove it. Itâs too bright to see where heâs aiming, but one shot is as good as any. Heâs not going down without a fight.

The first thing that registers is motion. Smooth, swaying back and forth. Darkness, something almost suffocating in itâs presence. It hadnât ever really been unusual for Toni to wake up with a sack over his head when missions went sour, but this was something entirely new. A trash bag? Something, that was for sure. It was a miracle heâd come to slowly, movements still sluggish from the brick wall heâd apparently run headfirst into. Best not to alert whoever seemed to be carrying him that he was awake until he knew exactly what was going on.
He hadnât even really seen what had happened, just remembered setting down his book from a knock at the door.
Though, from the involuntary tears in his eyes and wetness he could only assume was blood, theyâd attempted to get him to swallow his damn nose.
They couldnât have gone far, though. Still inside Respawn boundaries? More than likely. Toni couldnât tell how much time had passed, but the crunch of sand and gravel beneath someoneâs feet sounded familiar enough. He just had to wait.
There's a knock at the door.
It had been a relatively quiet day, no fights amongst RED and BLU, no squabbles between the teammates themselves. Toni had been enjoying the day, weekend ceasefire. No one had bothered him at all, which was strange in itself.
It mightâve made him nervous --
If not for the knock at the door. Finally, some usual behavior.
âI was begging to wonder when someone would bother me.â
âFine, Iâm coming, Iâm coming.â
kukrispyâ:
Sniper could tell Antoine was lying and it pained him deeply to even possibly fathom whatever the hell had happened that led to the Spyâs current state.Â
But now was not the time to ask into that. Mick saw the bullet wound, saw the quivering in the otherâs body when he coughed.Â
And he knew what Spy wanted him to do.
His gaze moved to the first aid kit splayed out haphazardly on the ground beside Antoine, suddenly feeling something heavy and terrible sink down into the pit of his stomach.Â
There was a bullet still lodged into Antoineâs side that he desperately had wanted to get out and patched up, which could only mean..Â
Mickâs hands trembled as he gathered together various items from the kit before, looking over the bullet wound before his gaze moved back up to his loverâs face.Â
â..Toni, you--youâre not registered in Respawn anymore, are you..â
âI...â
No. He wasnât. He had been removed the moment theyâd taken him, the moment the experiments had started. What good was an experiment if the test subject died, got loose and spilled the beans? They had pushed him further than he ever thought possible, almost killed him on more than one occasion.
Tentacles curled idly as Sniper knelt beside him, and his hand joined them. Settling weakly on the sharpshooterâs thigh. it sure was cold, even for the desert.
âNo. But Iâll --nngh.. Iâll be alright. Iâve been shot with worse before.â
Though he wasnât entirely sure. He knew the effects of blood loss, knew the effects of shock. Knew, surprisingly, the meaning of his neckâs side fluttering, asking silently for water.
âBetter hurry. I want to be out of your hair... before they come looking. I.. bled a lot on your doorstep, hah...â
