oh,  hell yes.    heâs been dying for a chance to take the stupid sailor cap off without blatantly breaking company policy.  whoâs gonna deny a seven year old ?  not the manager,  and definitely not steve right now.   â  well,  yâknow.  kids are always right.  â   itâs near - whispered back with an eager shrug,  hat pulled off and free hand instinctively running through his hair to make sure itâs nice and  volumized.   elbows then rest on the counter as he leans between the cash register and the right side ice cream case,  offering the apparent fashion piece to the little girl while giving perhaps his most genuine smile of the entire day.   â  here.  keep it.  a memento from scoops ahoy.  â
THE EFFECT IS INSTANTANEOUS. Allieâs eyes light up, and she takes the hat from him like sheâs accepting the Holy Grail. After she puts it on her head, Jo leans down and adjusts it so that it sits at an angle, but itâs still a hat meant for a teenager and not a kid, so it flops forward a bit. Thereâs a kid over by the fountain who Allie runs over towards in order to show off her fancy new cap, courtesy of the nice man at the ice cream shop.   â  Weâre new to the area, and sheâs absolutely obsessed with the mall.  â   Johanna cracks a little smile.   â  Iâm not sure if itâs all that great or if the fact that she gets ice cream whenever she comes created some sort of feedback loop.  â
