âyeah, yeah, just blame the guy who talks too much and doesnât think before he speaks. typical. criminal.â newt replies in amusement at erinâs response, eyes warm with his fondness as he glances at her. honestly, it was always fun to muck around with erin like this. newt was pretty sure that theyâd known each other long enough that the back and forth was second nature, and sometimes you just needed that. you just needed to not think, and to laugh, and well, that wasnât all the they did of course. sometimes thingâs werenât this good. but newt could happily appreciate when they were. he arches a brow at erinâs confident reply, lips curving even as he attempt to stifle his smile with his curious, âoh, is it? well. excuse me. i didnât realize i was speaking to hilary clinton herself. will you be offering a seminar on how to achieve your level of familial emancipation? will you teach me your ways?â the teasing is gentle because well, newt knows whatâs really thinly veiled in those comments and heâs hoping not to disturb too much of it because heâs been there. he understands it. honestly, heâs been striving for his own independence, otherwise known as freedom, from his family for as long as he can remember. he knows that erinâs different, though. that some part of her at least used to want her fatherâs approval, and newt can only imagine that thatâs worse. he hasnât sought out his parents approval ever, from what he can remember. their love, maybe but, well. heâs honestly even stopped doing that. âoh, iâm sorry i didnât realize what a privilege iâd been given. my mistake.â newt puts a hand over his heart as he sorrowfully shakes his head, lips twitching as he asks her, âwould you like to play that interaction through again and iâll revise my response? i promise this time i will bring the proper level of excitement to the performance.â newt gives erin a pointed look at her question, shaking his head with a purse of his lips as he says, â⌠oh come on, erin, you know iâve never been a big gambler. there are too many variables, i get too anxious about it, it brings back memories of my fatherâs crippling cat fighting gambling addiction, which can not lead to anything good when combined with my past trauma with chuck e cheeseâŚâ newt hopes the joke will distract erin from her goal, but heâs not holding out on it. when erin gets something in her mind newt isnât sure thereâs much anyone can do to stop her from doing it. and even if there was anyone who could, newt isnât entirely sure it would be him. newt huffs a laugh at erinâs dramatics, eyes crinkling with it as he says, âoh, come on now, erin, this is getting less believable by the seconds. thereâs not a person in the world who wouldnât be able to love you.â newt means it, even if he doesnât quite expect her to believe it. erin was⌠a lot, but she was a lot of good for the most part. she would be easy to love. newt should know, he loves her. even if itâs not romantic, it still counts. newt snorts at her retort, shaking with his laughter as he says, âa wig! god, youâd have to get me another beer just to get me into it. youâd have to keep me liquored up until the end of time, erin. is that what you want?â newt asks with an arch of his brow, âto turn me into a drunk all because you canât stand the sight of my bare scalp?âÂ
âthink of it as a good lesson to think before you speak now, otherwise this could be the dire consequences.â that was one of their crucial differences, because erin thought out everything she said perfectly before she did it. she was a writer to her life, making sure every word she said fit perfectly, gave the ruse of who she wanted to be. she said too many things she didnât mean just for the sake of saying it, and sometimes she said too much that she did mean and it always left her hurt. âi would but if you havenât caught onto it in all the years weâve known each other and been attached then i donât think youâll ever learn.â there was only so much influence a person could have on another, and she wished newt was able to have more of a positive one on her. itâs not even a lack of trying on his fault, rather on hers. so comfortable wallowing in her sorrow, the tragedy that sheâs made her life into, she wouldnât know how to be better even if she wanted. she claims to want it, but throws herself into any trouble she can, making things worse for herself each time. âyes, i would like to do it again actually, thank you for asking. okay, letâs start over.â she shook her body out as if she was an actress ready to start over her shot, getting in character all over again. âso newt, are you gonna play a game and win me something?â batting her eyelashes up at him for an added effect, a smile directed up at him that was more sweet than her usual mischievous ones. âsince when did you have chuck e. cheese related trauma? besides any residual trauma a place like this is bound to leave someone, of course.â she questioned, rolling her eyes at him though her smile remained. âcome on, choose my target, and remember iâm never opposed to a challenge.â she could sense newtâs disapproval, but her own pride got in her way of ending it all, forcing it to go on as long as it could until he fully shut her down. she was never capable of shutting herself down, even when she knew her ideas were only chaos and could only lead to trouble. she sensed she got that from her father, whether she liked to admit it or not, he was just a lot more calculated in his chaos, a lot more subtle. âyouâre sweet for saying that.â she resigned herself easily with that, not like she usually would. they were having so much fun right now, she couldnât bring herself to ruin it with her internal drama. newt always meant well, but sometimes saying those things isnât enough when everything in her life has proven otherwise. âi hate to say it but yes, iâll have to make you a drunk because i refuse to be around not only bald you but sober bald you. i donât think thatâs good for either of us.â
