The Duff
A 2015 teen movie starring Mae Whitman, Bella Thorne. It talks about love, popularity, friendship and accepting one self. This movie is a fresh breath of air from cheesy and crappy romantic chick flicks. But what does the duff means?
Duff is an acronym for "Designated Ugly Fat Friend". It does not necessarily means that you are ugly and fat but the duff is the less attractive friend, the one who makes the pretty friend pops out. The one people approaches to ask questions about the hotter friend.
It is pretty evident that in the hierarchy of friendships, there will be a friend who is on top of you, obviously because they are greater in some aspects. Unbeknownst to them, sometimes they are being treated as the duff by the people surrounding them, especially in the field of romance. These duffs are the one being used as a bridge to get inside information about the hotter friend being targeted by the hungry piranhas. A person that is being ran into when they got turned down from the girl that they court. Cruel as it may sound but it is the truth and no one could deny it.
I must admit that I am a duff. There were instances during high school even in college, that people used me to make a move to my friends. I remember, I have this friend who has a silky black wavy hair, fair skinned complexion, and a nice toned body. Obviously she is way prettier than me because as for my case, I have a very out of this world curls, chubby cheeks and darker complexion. I did not even knew that I was a duff then, but boys specifically kept asking me, questions about my friend. "What is her favorite color?" "What type of guy she likes?" "What does she prefer chocolate or flowers?" "What was her ulam for today?" And other questions related to her. Unknowingly I was giving them the information they needed and I was even rooting for them. Weird right? Then once they got the information. They will vanish like poof! Sometimes the saddest part about being the duff friend is that you thought they were befriending you because you are you but mainly it is because they needed something from you.
But that is life. You can't constantly keep on running from it. Yes, there will be people greater than you- who will be prettier, more talented, smarter, popular and etc. Some ads may say that "I don't care if she is prettier" because I'm telling you, no matter how much empowerment you read and see at the end of the day you will still care. You will still care why they were using you, why are you so ugly and fat, what made you his/her friend. And the answer for your questions is acceptance. Accept yourself, accept that these stuff happens because it is inevitable, it will keep on coming again and again, accept that your friend knows nothing about it, it is not their fault that they makes you feel less. Because always remember that everyone is going through a lot, they have their own fair share of insecurities just like you.
Sometimes the secret ingredient for awesomeness is being you. The word duff is just a label that people put on you but it does not necessarily mean that they can dictate what's your price. You are the one who puts your worth. The one who decides if she wants to be used over and over again. It is your choice.
Being the duff is not a bad thing. It is just a matter of acceptance and a honest friendship.
