The teacher part of me definitely had a say in the writing of this book.  In fact, The Epic of Clair is not only the book I wanted to read but could never find--it is precisely the book I have long wanted to teach.  Here are a few of its teachable features:

Epic form;

Blank verse (unrhymed iambic pentameter) and a few other forms of meter;

Academic vocabulary--egregious, archetype, etc.--but not packed so tight as to make reluctant readers want to bail;

A friend who is reading an advance-reader copy of The Epic of Clair was reminded of this song by the Talking Heads, “(Nothin but) Flowers.” I think I remember hearing it in the eighties, especially the “You got it, you got it,” but now am stupefied by its perfect correspondence to my book.
