BMPCC 4K RAW Vs. Panasonic S1 V-Log

I just did a quick test to see how the cameras are handling daylight. Please keep in mind that I did not lit this scene, it’s just a quick test to see their behaviours and the ability to push their image.

Setup: BMPCC 4K + Panasonic 25mm MFT lens @f1.7, 4K DCI, BMD FILM Panasonic Lumix S1 + Samyang 50mm @ T2.5, 4K, 10bit 4:2:2, V-Log

Here are my first (not professional) toughts:

Both cameras were set to 5500K, still the Pocket 4K was much-much warmer than the S1. I had to dial the temperature down to 4100 in Resolve to match them together. I had this issue before when I was trying to match some URSA Mini G2 shots with the Pocket 4K, they had the same color temp. setting, yet the still looked a bit different.

Straight from the camera it was easier to work with the log than with the raw, yet the raw’s possibility to dial in options in post is priceless.

The two cameras are having very different highlight rolloff and (i did not measured it but) it seems like the S1 has a bit more dynamic range. The Log container is also very different from the BMD Film container. Play with the footages and see for yourself.

From what I saw so far, i pretty much like the S1′s image. He will be a great company to the Pocket 4K.

I tried to match the two images together, I’m not a colorist and it was a quickie, so please do not take this post as a professional reference :) Also, this was my first test with the two cameras, probably more to come. Feel free to download the footages from my google drive »
