Today is International Recycling Day. Is our recycling system working?

For 1 year after a species at risk is listed for the first time, there will be no protections for it. For 3 years Conservatives may ensure there are no protections. This is madness!!

Ontario’s Environmental Assessment Act is being reviewed on the Environmental Registry. There are major changes such as the creation of thresholds and lists for all projects and streamlining the process. There are concerns about this approach such as a project that is just under a threshold not having to be evaluated.

The media is talking a lot about climate change when it comes to flooding in Canada. There is not enough talk about parking lots, lack of maps, development of wetlands, forests and undersized infrastructure built 100 years ago. The problem with this is that governments within Canada will continue to make flooding worse.

Today is World Press Freedom Day! Every time City council meets the media is in attendance. The media covers major or minor events. Even when no one else shows up the media is there. I am reminded about the importance of the media in my daily life because many of the events I attend or the issues I care about were first covered by media organizations. The media helps mobilize people and improve access to information. Unfortunately, the media is under threat both here at home and internationally. Newspapers are going under creating large gaps in local news and covering news in many parts of the world remains deadly.

A lot of the changes to the review process involve required increased First Nations involvement in the review process so this proposal is unconscionable

Today is National Day of Mourning. Some people don't die on the job but, they die because of it.We should mourn their loss. When I moved to Peterborough I became aware of how a whole city is impacted years after retirement from poor house keeping and exposure to carcinogenic chemicals. Today people are dying on their first day of work. We should mourn them as well because whether you have worked many years or you just started work you deserve to come home and be in a safe environment at work. We should also take action to ensure workers come home safely.
