We have seen where Welcome to Night Vale started, why it started, and how it’s affected us since then– but what affected the creation of Welcome to Night Vale, and its social media platforms?

Podcast

Regarding the podcast form of Welcome to Night Vale, we see limitations already very clearly that affect the way the story is told. Most noticeably, the podcast is, well, a podcast. This affects several aspects: mostly how the story is told, and how we view the story.

How the story is told

The nature of the podcast allows for a special type of storytelling, through vocal infliction and the need to keep a listener’s attention without the aid of a visual aspect. We, as listeners, are captured by the pure base of the story and music, rather than any visual effects such as animation or art style. This is, of course, disregarding the fact that Welcome to Night Vale is written as if it were a radio show, which gives an entire formula (of sorts) that the podcast is forced to follow.

How we view the story

As said above, Welcome to Night Vale is a story without visuals– which leads to no solid descriptions for many characters, or key elements that don’t come in until much later on in the story. This allows the fans the chance to allow their creativity to flow– giving us many different versions of the characters in the story.

Social Media

Not only does the podcast itself show effects from the environment it was created in, so do the social media accounts created under Welcome to Night Vale’s name. The twitter account, for example, is stuck within a character limit, due to it being on twitter. However, while being restricting, it may be both a blessing and a curse, as the low character limit boils the tweets put up down to the very essence of Welcome to Night Vale’s mystery and strange allure.

Stage 2: Literacy Map

The Literacy Map is a good way to map your advantages, disadvantages, and te help you think you’ll need by the time the fall semester rolls around.

The form of this project could end up looking like anything. It could be a Prezi PowerPoint (avoid Microsoft PowerPoints or other similarly tradition PowerPoints), video, drawings, a series of original memes, or anything else that helps you and your audience get a sense of your literacy access.

Whatever you create, make sure your map means something. For example, a writing process map made of a series of polaroids because you think your writing happens in these quick and visual snapshots of ideas is a cool connection. An audio journal of a reading because you read out loud has a deep meaning. So think about what form makes a DEEPER SENSE for the processes you're investigating.·

While you have a lot of leeway in regards to what the map looks like, the map should also teach us about you in the following ways:

1. Gives us a clear sense of the type of literacy you want access to. Are you interested in knowing how to write in your major? Read literature with a deeper understanding? Utilize an effective time management plan? Give us a clear sense of the type of access you’re looking for.

2. Help us understand what type of learner you are. Are you a visual learner? Audio learner? Hands-on? Show us your learning style and talk about how that has helped and/or hurt your literacy access based on past learning experiences.

3. Give us a good idea about external factors that have helped and/or hurt your access. Think in terms of the Brandt article when thinking about this. Who were your literacy sponsors and how did they help or withhold access? What about other external factors? Race? Economics? Gender? Other external factors not covered by Brandt?

You will be posting your map on your literacy profile. You will need to post the following things:

1. The actual map

2. Occompany your map with a detailed post explaining the significance of your project. Provide a description of your project, who it's for (audience), and why you decided this format (whatever you created) was appropriate for that audience. Write in a way that will be appealing and enjoyable to read for your social media audience (no need for stuffy, academic speak).

Stage 1: Reflection Profile

The reflection profile is a space for you to begin your literacy journey. Remember, literacy can mean all sorts of things aside from basic reading. You may want access on how to write field reports as an engineer, conduct research in your field of study, memorize information for tests, or any other advanced or basic skills you think you will need in the long or short term. The profile needs to tell the story of why you want access to this type of literacy and reflect on your past experiences with this literacy in the following ways:

1. Obstacles

2. Advantages

When thinking about your obstacles and advantages, tell these memories like a story. We all love compelling narratives, so do your best to draw us in with your personal experiences. Remember, you are writing this for a general social media audience, so don’t feel like you have to be overally formal. The following three areas are the final portions of the rubric you’ll be graded on:

1. Make sure the type of literacy access you want is stated clearly.

2. Write in a way that a general social media audience will find entertaining and interesting to read. Feel free to use plenty of memes, gifs, and images to enhance your point.

3. Meet the criteria of an effective social media profile that your small group established on the first day of class.

I was on Pinterest today and ran across this horribly photoshopped dress. Since the post had already caught my attention, I clicked on the link to the website and the dress apparently had only 22 dresses left in stock. I couldn’t stop laughing over the fact that someone bought the dress when the image is fake. How could someone fall for a clearly photoshopped dress and think it would turn out the exact same in person. The owner of the account clearly pinned this post to gain revenue off the dress from other followers on Pinterest. The fact that people actually bought the dress astounds me, but I’m more surprised that no one has yet to call out the owner of the account in the comment section of the pin.

Sanah is a friend I made last semester when I participated in a University of Texas fellowship program in Washington, D.C. During the time I got to know her, she always inspired me with her immense courage and kindness in the face of adversity. She uses her social media to talk about her experience living with alopecia and how it led her to starting her own non-profit foundation on inner beauty. Her work with her foundation has allowed her to have some amazing experiences. This post talks about one of those most recent experiences where she was able to attend a film festival in Santa Barbara, California. Here she is on the red carpet at the festival, talking about how she she would have never imagined receiving such an opportunity. I thought this post was a great use of social media because not only is she sharing her successes with her friends and family, but she is also inspiring others who may feel like their dreams are out of reach by giving proof that that is she was able to achieve her despite her doubts. I this this illustrates the good that social media can have on society. Influencers like Sanah can connect with people facing similar troubles and show them that they are not alone in their adversity and it is possible to be happy or successful in spite of whatever difficulties they encounter.

Seeing this gives me hope that there are people out there who understand that immigrants aren’t here to “steal jobs” like Trump says. Although I am from the states and have lived here my whole life I know the stuggkes of immigrants witnessing it first hand from my family. This post is beautiful in the sense that it portrays the simple life that immigrants would want to live but don’t get. Saying that only important immigrants have a voice is true…. many times no one hears the voice of those who are living the life of an immigrant because they are “unimportant”. With everything going on in this world dealing with illegals I question if anyone has asked them why? Why are they here and what do they want? Taking it out on those who are a part of daca is wrong in my opinion for the reason being people clam they come to steal jobs etc. but don’t realize those who come are just looking to live a better life like “us”. Think about it.

Things Like “Exigence” and Other Rhetorical Things

Elisabeth H. Buck makes use of surveys and interviews to get a grasp of why students (or maybe just people in general) use social media sites all the time and maybe, just maybe, we should be using them in schools.

Let me explain…

Buck uses a survey and interviews, but not one of those “Where Would You Live if You Were in Middle Earth” kind of surveys. First thing, is she wants to find out what are these posters thinking for each post. Who are these people posting for? When posting something online, it’s important to think about who it is that’s going to see what your posting. Are you trying to teach your audience something new or keep someone updated? What reaction are you trying to gain from posting something online?

Buck creates some posts online and the people partaking in the survey choose from a selection of adjetives to gain an understanding of what they think of posts being made on these platforms.

What we learn here, is that across different platforms, these posters are being made with a consideration of who is seeing these posts. People using Facebook use that platform for more personal information and share information with close family and friends, where Twitter is used to share thoughts as they come and go.

Buck also tells us, about something called “Exigence”, which almost acts as a driving force for people making posts in the first place. When someone makes a post, they’re almost hoping for a positive response in the forms of Likes, retweets, reblogs, and comments. An image is posted hoping for a like or retweet and gain some exposure, or possibly some criticism to fix a piece of art or different ideas for an outfit. Someone might ask a question about where to go or how to do something and someone could answer!

Twitter is difficult because of the limited amount of characters you can use. A good strategy is to be smart with your picture(s). Go beyond memes and show us examples of the concept you’re trying to teach us. The group’s Tweet above used Canva.com to create a picture that gives us a visual example of what ineffective and effective highlighting looks like.

While Tumblr users may be dwindling, their platform incorporates a lot of striking visuals with text. The lush, banner style aesthetic really gives your reader a great experience. The post above does a good job of talking about a specific passage from the text and showing a visual example of what the idea from that passage looks like.

Instagram is a fun platform to use. If you love taking pictures or shooting videos, then this is the platform for you. You also have the opportunity to use as much text as you need. The group above shot the scenes in this post from their phone during class time.
