Family means nobody is really sure of what to do with each other

Completely agree with the sentiment that giving repressed/older and historical/non introspective characters therapyspeak dialogue is annoying mischaracterisation at best and actively skipping over interesting conflict at worst-

But I do also love it when a character IS aware of their issues, has introspected on them, maybe even knows the clinical terms for them or was diagnosed, and it still doesn't fix things. Yes, this character is aware how their upbringing and traumatic experiences messed them up and created their harmful patterns. And yes, the patterns are!! still!! there!! It can be helpful sometimes, certainly, but self awareness alone isn't a solution and sometimes makes you feel even worse!!!

Bonus points if their character almost has it right in their self psychoanalysis. They pretty much got the barebones figured out, they understand why they act and react the way they do... but there's still one or two blindspots. Things that have slipped under the radar or they just haven't realised yet or are actively lying to themselves about.

Me when the characters in a story start arguing and letting their nasty sides out and i get to see if their relationship can stand it, grow, or if ultimately they break apart. Or maybe even a secret third worse thing.

Trans men being seen as "undesirable, unfuckable women" after transitioning

Trans men being one of the demographics of the LGBT community at highest risk of rape

Trans men being targets of forced detransition via corrective rape and forced pregnancy

People denying both that this increased risk of rape and forced detransition even exists, and instead attributing it to trans men being "TERFs in waiting"

People insisting that trans men being seen as unfuckable women and/or mentally ill girls protects them from systemic violence and therefore makes them less worthy of protection

would be funny if it wasn't fucking terrifying. When you deny the reality of transandrophobia- when you claim that trans men are lucky to "only" be seen as "ugly mentally ill girls"- you are enabling societal violence against trans men.

- m/f ship between a nonblack man & a Black woman

- it's either canon (e.g. mel/jayce arcane, arthur/guinevere bbcmerlin) or entirely plausible (e.g. prism or coupé/robert dispatch)

- fanbase overwhelmingly pairs nb man off with another nb man and disengages from the Black woman character, shunting her into a background wise & sassy caretaker role (for which there is a name) or leaving her out of fanworks entirely

- fans who do this ^ claim it is an expression of love and admiration for the Black woman character, actually, bc the nb man (who may be her canonical partner) "can't handle all that" (he may be perfectly competent and engaged; she may be totally low maintenance; it has no bearing), she's just too wonderful (too much) and out of his league (lacking in flaws and interiority and fan appeal)

have we all observed this and can we see the multiple dimensions in which it is racist ☝️ i'm not bringing it up to make any beautiful fujos feel bad abt shipping this or that, just to ask for some consideration of what ppl are saying abt Black women when they make their excuses to each other. like you can just not make the excuses. yk?

always chewing on characters who would Never do anything as vulnerable as admit what happened but the signs are all there. stark, shiny scars they brush off concern for. pains that crop up at strange times. obsessive habits they refuse to break and aversions they won’t explain. bags under their eyes and a thin face, no matter how competent they are at whatever task is set before them. a worn cog still turns. even if everyone can see the damage, it doesn’t need to draw attention. really.

A reminder that darker fiction has a right to exist and explore themes that people are uncomfortable with. Yes, even if it's romanticized. Yes, even if you personally don't like it.

Authors have always written about things that they don't agree with morally, and I hope to god they always will, despite how shitty people treat them for doing that now.

#additionally its important to think about why youre including something and what you're trying to do with it. an #and how you frame it and what the implications of that are #i do think that if you handle a sensitive subject really poorly that thats worth criticism

Your dialogue is stiff because everyone is being too honest

Great dialogue can come from radical emotional honesty. But in most real conversations, people

dodge questions

answer indirectly

lie (badly)

change the subject

crack jokes to avoid serious answers

lie (convincingly)

say half of what they mean

tell the truth but get so anxious/angry/defensive others now think they're lying

If your dialogue feels unnatural, it might be because everyone is saying exactly what they think, or articulating their thoughts too well. Try letting characters hide things instead.

Subtext is where tension lives.

The best advice I ever got, and thusly, I think, the reason I always get compliments on my dialogue, is this:

Your two characters are having a conversation, but each one is having a different conversation. They should always reply to what they think the other person is saying, and they should always be wrong about their assumption.

Now, obviously, like any writing advice, this rule is meant to be broken. Any writing advice you are given is more like... a guideline.

#the raw honest direct conversation where characters talk openly should be a Rare Treat. imo
