Enchanted In Paris

I've noticed a few new followers to this blog in the past few days as one of my photos is circulating again. I haven't really been keeping up with my French and (tragically) don't have any plans to head back to Europe at the moment, so I wanted to let you know it's pretty quiet around here.

My main blog can be found here, though it's mostly reblogs/complaints about grad school at the moment.

My dear, dear friend Sami is leaving today for her second semester abroad in Paris!!! Go follow her adventures on her new blog here. 

It's almost two years to the day since I was in her place. It brings back all the scary, wonderful memories of my own trip, and I canNOT wait to hear all about it.

For those of you who have never been embarrassed on the métro by locals giving you the disdainful Paris Once Over.

Hi! I’m so happy you’re thinking about going. It was one of the highlights of my college experience, for sure. I would say that if you’re looking to make French friends, it really all depends on your fluency level.  I’ve spoken about this with my cousin (who’s in Paris for two years at the Sorbonne) at length. For me it was pretty much impossible, because I really didn’t have a good grasp on the language. She was at a conversational level and looking to become fluent; I’d say that if your abilities are similar you won’t have trouble making friends (or meeting non-creepy French men!)

Hi guys!! Sorry it's been so long, and thanks to all of you old and new people for staying with/joining me here.  

My brother's leaving for his year in England tomorrow and it's making me so nostalgic for my semester in Paris! (By the way. I tried to get him to start a blog but to no avail.)

The good news is, I'll be visiting him for three weeks during winter vacation. I'll see his school in Bristol before we head off to Paris (our cousin is at the Sorbonne and we're celebrating Christmas together) and Rome/Switzerland (the last two with our parents). 

And I'm hoping to go back with my friend when we graduate in the spring! 

So there's a lot of Paris in my future. And baguettes. And chocolat chaud. *happy dance*  

Je vais etre dans mon cinquième semestre de français cette automne. J'ai oublié beaucoup. D:  Il va etre un véritable cauchemar, je suis sûr. Souhaitez-moi bonne chance!

Also, my brother's going to England for a year and I'll be visiting him/Paris/Rome for two weeks at Christmas. (!!!) I'm going to try to get him to start a blog, so stay tuned on that front!!

But you know what this means for all of us, don't you? I'll be making at least one trip over there to visit him (and hopefully show him around Paris). 

Hi!! I’m so, so excited for you. 

I attended UC Paris (which is basically a University of California campus like UC Berkeley or UC Santa Barbara but with kids from all the UC schools) and stayed in a homestay that the program set up.  I absolutely loved the area where I stayed and my family. My best advice would be not to judge Paris by its metro.  You’ll see why I say that when you get down there. And:

Since you’re going to be there in the summer, I recommend that you take advantage of the amazing parks of Paris. (I would have totally lived in them if it hadn’t gotten so cold and rainy in October.)  Here is a pretty good list of the best ones . My personal favorites are the Parc André Citroën (for all of the fun modern designs and fountains) and Bois de Vincennes (for the beautiful huge lake and castle—and the delicious pizza place nearby that does a 2-for-1 deal, which is pretty rare in Paris.  Grab pizzas with friends and head to the park to enjoy them!! Let me know if you need the restaurant name :) ). They’re both “off the beaten path” compared to the Tuileries or Luxembourg.  Settle in on a bench and you really get a sense of the Parisian park culture.
