i can’t emphasise this enough — the 21st century is the first time in ALL OF human civilisation that women as a class are able to survive and thrive outside the confines of marriage
before the 21st century, as far back as historical records go, unless if you were a priestess or a nun, a widow or unusually financially independent, marriage was unavoidable for all women across EVERY SINGLE civilisation and time period
by the time the Agricultural Revolution occurred in 10,000 BCE, males had already introduced widespread rape and the institution of marriage — designed to control women and women’s reproduction, and to ensure that any land and property owned by males were transferred to their biological sons, and their biological sons only
ancient mesopotamia, ancient egypt, ancient greek, ancient rome — all had marriage, and all were deeply patriarchal societies (ancient egypt is often touted as the least patriarchal ancient civilisation, but it was still patriarchal)
if you are an unmarried woman today, who never plans to marry a man:
you are refusing to submit to centuries’ worth — actually, millennials’ — of patriarchal rule that has been pushed on to every. single. woman. and. girl. who. EVER. existed. since. modern. civilisation. began.
