I am a lifelong insomniac--as in, I remember nap time in kindergarten as that period when I would just lie on a mat, wide awake and bored as hell while everyone else zonked out all around me. For many years I took sleep meds, and even these only did so much good.
Then, around the end of last year, I began listening to audiobooks on sleep headphones, and it is more effective than ANY DRUG. The trick, I learned, is not to listen to new books (because then I get involved and can't go to sleep) or very exciting favorites (ditto). Instead, it has to be relatively sedate favorites I've read so much I almost know passages by heart (THE SHELL SEEKERS, LITTLE WOMEN), or audio courses on topics that I am interested in but either (a) know very well already or (b) am not so fascinated by that I'll wind up staying awake to hear more. The Great Courses on physics, chemistry and ancient civilizations tend to work beautifully. This is especially effective because my biggest issue wasn't taking a long time to fall asleep (though this was a thing), but waking up in the night and then thinking/fretting about ALL THE THINGS for hours on end. Now I wake up, hear somebody talking about nuclear particles or the Olmecs, and engage with that very minimally before I drop off again.
If you have sleep issues and haven't tried this, give it a shot!
people make jokes about how people who weren’t allowed to watch spongebob as a kid are always talking about how they weren’t allowed to watch spongebob but as one of the aforementioned people who wasn’t allowed to watch spongebob my insight on the matter is: you would not BELIEVE the amount of times spongebob comes up in normal adult conversations. i don’t often think about him of my own accord but people reference him and i have to say. what? and they say. it’s from spongebob?? and i say. oh i never watched spongebob. and they say why? and i say. i wasn’t allowed to. and then a few weeks later it happens again
the people who say the lightlark series and the empyrean series are at the same level are just fully lying to you btw. i've now read both and can confirm that they're either dumb as hell or haven't read the books

A quick card painting done under the influence of an appropriate amount of vodka just now. It keeps me from thinking too hard about all the ways this game keeps breaking my heart

69% thru the book and it's the way dain could probably fully die to protect somebody in this squad and everybody would still go hmmmmmm i don't know about dain. still kind of a rule-following flop, he's probably snitching on us to his dad thru some kind of speaking with the dead magic. feeling like this every time i have to read some more bullshit directed his way
we're over halfway through 2026. what are everyone's most beloved books of the year so far?

as somebody who liberally uses highlights in ebooks and has categories assigned to each color to keep things sorted for later searching/rereading, i go into a temporary black out rage every time i see some clip/screenshot of somebody just picking colors and highlights/underlines at random for their fuckass romance scene

Whatever. Go my baldurs gate 3 dating quiz that i made like 2 months ago and forgot to post
2 books finished on the first day of the month, going to take this as a sign that i'll have a fantastic reading month
i didn't know this was considered a classic until i'd gotten about 70% through the audiobook and clocked it on storygraph. i can see why it'd be considered a classic, but my god this could've gone with a few hours of content being cut if i'm being so fr. there were far too many tangents to unrelated people that weren't related to the crime well enough to justify spending so much time on them, especially towards the end (i didn't need to hear about the other evil fucks on death row, i just needed to hear confirmation that these two involved in the book's main crime fucking croaked). i think i'm going to be sick to my stomach furious over that woman who dared to say the poor mother of this family would've felt sorry for one of her murderers for at least a month, that's still ringing in my ear 2 days after first hearing it.
i'm so sad that i've now read all of the published paladin romances because i love the world so very much and i'm going to miss the guilt-ridden paladins!! this romance was a bit strange for me because on one hand it was the clearest case of why these two characters would be good for one another (never more clear than in their tying up sex scene), but at the same time i didn't feel that these two had connected as deeply as some of the other couples?? maybe it was missing marguerite opening up a little more??? idk what it was exactly, but it's lingering. i do think that this was my favorite ending for one of the paladins, tho, i cried my eyes out over that dreaming god sequence and was so glad to see that he made a decision for the good of himself in the end. this definitely wasn't my favorite quest/adventure plot of the series (that's either book 1 or 2 tbh), but i loved the supporting characters (wren was wonderful). book 3 for sure had my favorite epilogue but this one would be runner-up because i love to hear any good news for the white rat tbh, bishop beartongue is the loml
