“I’m proud of you.” She wasn’t sure what else she could say. She was in fact proud of him. For trying. For staying alive. She wasn’t sure how to articulate that in its entirety though, just that she was proud.
“Don’t be,” Sturgis replied, perhaps too quickly. “Not yet, at least.” He wondered if maintaining sobriety would always feel like walking this impossibly narrow wire, suspended terrifyingly high in the air. Sturgis cleared his throat. “How’ve you been?” He didn’t want to talk about himself anymore. Not now, at least.Â
“Mm, haven’t you learned you can’t tell me what to do by now?” She said with a smile. He was trying, that counted for something. He switched the focus to her and she tried not to bristle. She could talk about herself with Sturgis. “You know me. I was built to survive.” It was like it was programmed into her brain. Survive at all costs, and she had. Granted, being back in the UK offered much better survival rates than their time in Egypt had.
