*gestures at heterosexual couple* so which of you is the Thomas More and which of you is the Thomas Cromwell?
Philip II of Spain saying alas he has absolutely no choice but to marry Elizabeth I:
I’m so glad Elizabeth said no because I just know that hurt his ego 😭
We don't really have Philip's reaction to Elizabeth's refusal, but Elizabeth was characteristically diplomatic. She cited religious differences and the fact Philip was married to her sister, rather than any issue with his person. Philip offered her other Hapsburgs as suitors and called her by her Defender of the Faith title until late in the 1560s, while other Catholic princes never referred to her that way.
Special props to Frances Walsingham for deciding, after two arranged marriages to men who died young, the last one after cheating on her relentlessly, "Screw that, I'm going to marry an Irish earl for love and convert to Catholicism, also, an extra special 'fuck you' to the O'Neills; yeah, my second husband was a sleeze but there's no way I'm letting my daughter marry your grandson."
obsessed with this footnote in my copy of romeo and juliet

gorbachev in 1991: our soviet age is collapsing
Philip II of Spain saying alas he has absolutely no choice but to marry Elizabeth I:
When a student copies an essay online instead of writing it and then painstakingly changes every word to a synonym until the text no longer makes any sense...
call that the Ship of Thesaurus
Any educator who doesn't feel this on a visceral level has never had to experience the psychic pain of reading the phrase "Unused York City."
This is the fifth anniversary of me receiving the paper that contained "Unused York City." With ChatGPT slop invading my classes like original thought-choking kudzu, I now look back on the copy-paste + Spinbot days with a surprising amount of rosy nostalgia.
I was once in the office and another professor called me over. She was teaching a course on global citizenship.
"I can't figure out what this student is writing about," she said. "She keeps using the phrase 'perspiration stores.' Perspiration stores this, perspiration stores that."
I glanced at the paper and read a paragraph.
"Friend," I said. "She's writing about sweatshops."
I think that part of what irks me about AI being used even for "small" stuff like meme graphics (aside from all the larger problems obviously) is like.... the time spent on it was part of the humor. "this is a silly inconsequential joke but I had to stop everything and spend 5 minutes making it" was, at least for me, part of the joke. Someone really took time out of their day to make me look at something silly they took time out of their day to make. Now it's like someone took time out of my day to make me look at something no one even made. Stop wasting my time if you aren't wasting yours too.
They should block chatgpt on uni WiFi the way they used to block coolmathgames
they should make chatgpt automatically redirect to coolmathgames so you can actually fucking learn something

This is something that bothers me in memes:
Notice that it is the woman doing the normal/dull/sensible/conventional thing and the man is doing the kooky/silly/nerdy/dorky thing. Like girls are never weird or experimental. Have you met girls and their potion brewing?
"He didn't cry at titanic" "do men even feel?" No woman has ever thought this.
("Boys take more risks" i have a story for you about a frostbitten vagina.)
I think it's connected to two things: Boys Will Be Boys, and the myth that boys are nerdier than girls, including history. Even though it's just as big a running joke that young girls love the Titanic and Anastasia Romanova just as much as men love WW2.
But that's not REAL history. History stops being REAL history when more girls are interested in it. 🙄
happy birthday to le morte d'arthur!!

fanfic shit easy
The Catalogue of Ships in the Iliad is, to a modern audiences, what classicists have called “boring as hell,” but I can’t help but think that if you were watching Homer recite it it would have been more like when comedians go, “anybody here tonight from Chicago?” and the Chicagoans in the back start cheering
Homer’s like, “and there were forty black ships from… LOCRIS” and the Locrians in the crowd start going absolutely nuts
