PSA: this is ! not a be all and end all ! your bias isn’t going to think any less of you if you don’t do these ! just some quicc tips for whoever’s interested <3

1. speaking korean

kind of a controversial point BUT most koreans actually don’t mind if you try to speak korean to them! (your bias might think it’s super cute that you went to the effort of learning parts of a foreign language for them idk)

don’t be nervous! bad pronunciation is a-ok! the effort is what shows and newsflash - foreigners trying to speak korean is not a big no-no for koreans (unless you’re being super cringe on purpose and going “otteukheyo oppa~” every 2 seconds big no-no)

2. easy korean greetings you can use (if you want to)

- the classic “hello”

kor: 안녕하세요

rom: an-nyeong-ha-se-yo

- “have you been well?”

kor: 잘지냈어요?

rom: jal-ji-ness-uh-yo?

- “it’s nice to meet you” (if they say hello first)

kor: 반가워요

rom: ban-ga-wuo-yo

**you can use any of the others if they greet you first but this one is mostly used after someone else says hi 

3. bowing

generally bowing is used with greetings and farewells and it’s pretty instinctual for koreans (god knows it’s stamped into my dna at this point)

you don’t have to do the 90 degree formal bow, that’s usually reserved for very very formal occasions

the 30ish degree bow is pretty standard, with your right hand over your left, elbows bent at about 70ish degrees, arms resting OR arms at your side (a little less formal but still a-ok) - and break eye contact for this one, idk why it’s just a thing

OR a nod (slightly slower than normal nods) - hands wherever, it doesn’t really matter, and you can choose to break or keep eye contact

(yes cringey koreaboos make me want to unalive) BUT

i don’t think it’s very fair to generalize all kpop fans as “cringey koreaboos”. most kpop fans i’ve met are generally very nice and genuinely interested in korean culture as welli wrote the post as something fans could use either for the heck of it or if they wanted to try their hand at some small gestures that koreans use a lotit’s not exactly cultural appropriation if a fan tries to learn some little parts of korean etiquette, rather, i think it’s kind of a nice touch

some quicc tips for lucky kboos going to meet their bias/es and want tips on korean etiquette

not trying to be salty, just a post for people who want to get it right for their biases

1. handshakes

if you’re going to go in for a handshake, offer your right hand, and lightly brace your right arm with your left hand (placed against the inside of your arm, in the middle of your wrist and elbow). when they take your hand, either quickly nod or bow at a 30 ish degree angle.

keep your head down while you shake and stand up straight after the handshake disengages. you can say a greeting before, during or after, doesn’t really matter, but people usually say a quick “anneonghaseyo” before

2. giving gifts

pls do not just drop a gift in front of them :’(((((( hold it with both hands and bow slightly when you hold it out to them. they will probably take it while bowing slightly as well and you can let go as soon as they have a grip on it. stand up straight right after.

3. honorifics

plssssss do not call someone “oppa” or “unnie” if they are not at least born in the year before you, it’s super awkward for e v e r y o n e involved 

if they are born in the same year or after you, it’s probably best to still use formal language, you just don’t have to use honorifics

4. receiving things

if they’re handing something back to you, do the slight nod/bow and receive with either both hands or the right hand w/ left hand brace, then stand up straight after they let go

5. leaving

if you’re sitting down, stand up still facing them, and do the slight nod/bow, then say your farewell, and step back, then you can turn to leave. same thing if you’re standing, minus the standing up part.

kor: 오늘은 어땠어요?

rom: oh-neul-eun eout-tte-sseo-yeo?

2. “your x are really pretty”

kor: x이 이쁘네요.

rom: x-ee ee-ppeu-ne-yeo

x: eyes/lips/hair/hands

kor: 눈/입술/머리/손

rom: noon/eep-seul/meu-ri/sson

*note, for “your hair is really pretty”, remove the “이” that’s after the x

3. “in all honesty, i love you” (awkward phrasing in english, but a common phrase in korea)

kor: 진심으로, 사랑합니다.

rom: jin-shim-eu-ro, sa-rang-hum-ni-da.

4. “please eat well and take care of yourself” (used a lot as a farewell)

kor: 잘먹고, 잘살고 있으세요

rom: jal-muk-go, jal-sal-go isseu-se-yo

5. “x suits you very well”

kor: x 어울리네요.

rom: x uh-ool-li-ne-yeo

***sidenote, most koreans are actually pretty familiar with english nouns because a lot of english nouns are used as part of the korean language. e.g “smartphone” is the same in english and korean. subbing in english nouns with any of the “x”s above should work fine. a general rule is: did the object that this noun is describing exist in medieval korea? if no, then koreans probably use the english word for it.

joohoney: duck master - “Duck masters are in charge of overseeing the hotel's five mallards, parading them through the lobby twice a day and informing guests about the duck's daily lives.”

i.m: chicken sexer - “Chick sexing is the method of distinguishing the sex of chicken and other hatchlings, usually by a trained person called a chick sexer or chicken sexer.”

hyungwon: the one that pretends to not know that he threw a ball over the fence so he doesn't have to go get it
