Andrew is the last to retire from the Exy.
THE LAST.
When Kevin retires because his game is starting to decline (age is catching up with him) and the chronic pain in his hand becomes unbearable, Andrew contemplates suicide to spare Kevin the satisfaction of seeing him be the last to retire.
Seven years earlier it had been Boyd, though Andrew didn't care at all. Five years earlier, Moreau ended his career to become the head coach at USC, replacing James Rhemann. Jeremy Moreau ended his career three years earlier to be with his daughters and husband, though he was far from retired (apparently, Jeremy was now a famous activist and surfing champion). Neil retired two years earlier after breaking his leg in an illegal play. Although he didn't suffer permanent damage, his 39 years and the long rehabilitation indicated that he would never again be the fastest on the court.
After extremely difficult months, Neil decided to leave the Exy when he was offered a job as a sports commentator.
He was a pain, the players' nightmare, and one of the most-watched commentators in the United States.
And then there was Kevin.
Andrew, somehow, was the last one left.
Andrew could have retired. It was over. It was all finished.
He was the most decorated goalkeeper in the world of exy, the one the new generations aspired to be. He had two damn Olympic medals and countless trophies. Andrew hated those accolades and wasn't planning on getting any more.
He could have retired, yes.
How the hell had he ended up being the last idiot in exy if he didn't even want to play?
When Andrew told Kevin, Kevin almost had a heart attack because, apparently, Andrew's age hadn't affected his game at all.
So Andrew tried to make his game worse. He slowed down. He trained less. He decided to laze around in goal whenever he felt like it. He pretended to be too old to keep up with everyone else.
But his reflexes betrayed him. Besides, he was addicted to the looks of disappointment and hatred he received when, breaking through the defensive line, Andrew crushed the opposing team's hopes by preventing their goals. The more hopeful the opposing team was, the more Andrew enjoyed watching them crumble.
No, no.
Andrew had to stop immediately.
If lowering his performance and simply announcing his retirement didn't work, there was one more thing he could do: sabotage his own career.
So, at a press conference, someone asked Andrew how he was going to relax after the game, and Andrew replied:
"I'm going home to my… husband."
Andrew and Neil weren't married. Andrew and Neil would have hurt each other's feelings before referring to each other as "husband," but it was the quickest way to get the message across.
After a brief silence, Andrew persisted.
"My husband, Neil Josten, the loudmouth addicted to exy"
The world went crazy.
Neil was live on air when Andrew dropped the bombshell. The cameras captured his reaction. Andrew spent the next few hours enjoying watching Neil's face go from paralysis to disbelief, and then to a gaping mouth for a few seconds of absolute silence. His first words when he regained his voice were: "We're going to commercials… No, shut up and cut it NOW!"
Andrew made a sticker with Neil's face and some GIFs that he used to mock him.
The first thing Neil said to him was: "You could have warned me sooner." And the first thing Andrew replied: "I thought dropping uncomfortable truths live on air was your thing. Or have you lost your sense of humor, you old fool?"
Then someone said: "I hate you to the very marrow of my bones" and the romantic conversation ended there, because they moved on to more pleasant things.
Andrew didn't answer Kevin when he called, nor Aaron's incredulous question ("Husband? Tell me Neil isn't my brother-in-law, Andrew. Tell me, damn it!"), nor Nicky's tearful voice messages telling him how proud she was of him.
He simply waited for his career to fall apart. Finally.
When his agent called the next day, Andrew was almost pleased. Almost.
When she told him he was getting support from the entire fanbase, his team, the whole sports world, and that, apparently, he was now a symbol, Andrew stuck the phone in the oven.
He had to restrain himself from sticking his head in it too.
"You had to say you were retiring, you know?" Neil said.
Andrew slowly turned his head toward him, crudely imitating the girl from The Exorcist.
Neil bit his lip and tried not to laugh.
And that's how Andrew Minyard became the greatest goalkeeper in history… and one of the world's biggest gay icons.
today i’m thinking about the aftermath of jerejean getting together and i was thinking about some traits that they would have like jeremy being soooo protective over jean. look i don’t think jeremy is the kind of protective person who immediately becomes aggressive or starts speaking for jean. that is actually what makes it work for them.
jeremy knows that jean has spent years having his boundaries ignored, so he is extremely careful not to become another person who decides what jean needs. instead, his protectiveness looks like creating an exit.
like imagine if someone is asking jean invasive questions and he starts getting visibly uncomfortable, jeremy doesn’t necessarily interrupt with “stop talking to him.” he might just step closer and say: “jean, weren’t we supposed to be somewhere.”
jeremy isn’t protecting him because he thinks jean is incapable of protecting himself. he knows jean can be terrifying when he wants to be. he is however protecting jean’s right not to have to defend himself every single time. and it is safe to say that jean notices everything. he notices the tiny change in jeremy’s expression. like he can be laughing one second and then suddenly his face goes completely still, his shoulders straighten, his attention focuses entirely on the person making jean uncomfortable, his voice becomes quieter.
and jean knows that look. he might even glance at jeremy and give the tiniest shake of his head.
‘Don’t.’
and jeremy immediately backs down because jean said no!
another thing is that jean secretly LOVES being taken care of. and it breaks my heart because my boy isn’t someone that thinks ‘i deserve to be taken care of.’ he is someone who has learned that ‘if i need something i should handle it myself.’
so when jeremy does something small for him without making it into a huge emotional event, jean doesn’t quite know what to do with it.
jeremy teaches him that being cared for doesn’t mean being powerless and it was so hard at first for my poor baby jean but he’s getting better :(
Hey, I just had an idea…
What if I go to your favorite ship tag and say that I think your ship bores me, doesn't seem convincing, or I think it's toxic? Or I use the tag to request fanfiction or some kind of content, specifying that it doesn't end with that particular pairing YOU'RE TAGGING.
I don't know, I wonder what would happen…
When Jean Moreau said, "I am not sorry. Perhaps I should be. But I will choose you every time. You, and Cat, and Laila, every time. I will lose them all if I must".

I think we, as a society, should keep in mind that Jean has had a crush on Jeremy long before they met at the airport.
Jean discovers Neil's scrapbook about Kevin. He looks through the pages of photos and analyses, clearly upset. When Neil catches Jean with his scrapbook, he doesn't even have the decency to look embarrassed.
"Oh, well… I also have one of Andrew, you know?" Neil excuses himself.
Jean tries to follow Neil's thought process. He can't. Not even in his worst moments, in the throes of his teenage crush on Kevin, would he have ever considered doing something so crazy.
Knowing Neil's schizoid, psychopathic behavior, Kevin and Andrew should perhaps be worried.
Then Neil pulls out another scrapbook.
Jean pinches the bridge of his nose.
"I don't want to see Andrew's damn scrapbook, Neil. You're sick."
"Don't talk nonsense. Why would I show you Andrew's scrapbook?" Neil asks indignantly.
He hands his the new scrapbook with that smile of a killer locked up in a mental institution.
"This is your scrapbook."
Jean tries to keep his voice steady as he says,
"...If you come any closer, I'll scream."
Anyway I'm so glad that Jean's canonical endgame romance is Jeremy Knox and that Jeremy is one of the protagonists of the aftg series 😊
A small smile in the changing room after practice :)
jeremy interfering to stop a fight is annoying to you. personally i think him being firm and bossy is so hot and i would like to volunteer for him to put me in my place next
like that's KEVIN DAY and JEAN MOREAU, who are famously scathing divas with an attitude for days and they both shut up so fast even jean was surprised mhm

We all know Jean and Neil are super similar but I think Andrew and Jean are as well. When we first meet them both they seem like broody, sociopathic, violent assholes who only speak to provoke and annoy. They both have negative reputations assigned to them. They both can be genuinely assholish. They both have acts of service as a love language. They both give creative insults. They both have a complicated relationship with touch. They both don’t care about being rude. They both are fiercely protective of their loved ones, and are unafraid to be physically violent on their behalf. They’re both surprisingly proactive in therapy. They’re both absurdly good at, and have complicated feelings around, Exy. They both play defense. They’re both going to end up pro, somewhat against their will. They both love Kevin Day.
Nora! I need an update… I can’t wait any longer.
people taking kevin’s “if you tell him to submit, he will” at face value and not seeing that tsc is about literally proving the opposite,,, like how can you read the books and not see that jean is naturally very demanding and does not like being told what to do and he’s very quick to refuse AND his very first instinct is to fight. how can you not understand that kevin’s words are not about who jean is but what the nest made him out to be? that it took everything in jean to “submit” just to survive? because he did fight. for five whole months. but it brought nothing but more pain.
When I first read The Sunshine Court, I genuinely thought Jean should have stayed with the Foxes. (And I still see people saying that to this day.)
I liked the Trojans, but all I could think about were my Foxes. I literally screamed every time one of the Foxes was mentioned, and I was so happy when Neil showed up, even though it hurt like hell, lol.
But by the time I finished The Golden Raven, I had truly fallen in love with the Trojans themselves. And now I understand that they were the best possible team for Jean. Jean is someone who managed to keep his kind heart despite everything life did to break him. He's such a genuinely gentle soul, and with the Trojans, he finally found people who surrounded him with the care he had always deserved.
The Foxes, traumatized as they all were, could never have given him that. The Trojans did, and it helped Jean begin to heal in just a few months. Jean with the Ravens and Jean with the Trojans feel like two completely different people.
I'm so glad Nora kept Jean alive and sent him to the Golden Court. The Trojans will be my love. Always.
A worried Jeremy.
I wonder what/who he’s thinking so hard about?

Jeremy slides across the bed very, very slowly. He makes sure Jean is still asleep before taking out the ring sizer and gently holding his hand. Heart pounding, Jeremy tries to slip the sizer onto his finger…
Until Jean wakes with a start and slaps Jeremy across the face.
Jeremy groans and collapses between Jean's legs, feeling a tooth loosen.
"What are you doing?" Jean asks, more confused than horrified.
Jeremy lifts his head from between his legs, ring sizer in hand. Jean's eyes immediately fix on the sizer.
"I… I wanted to measure…" Jean raises an eyebrow. Jeremy gets very flustered. "…Your penis."
"…My penis," Jean repeats uncertainly.
"It's just… I…" Jeremy feels his face burning, but he can't spoil this surprise for Jean. No way. "I like them… Big… And I think you're the biggest I've ever had, and I wanted to… Check it out."
Jean stares at Jeremy like he's an idiot, because… How else would he look at a perverted idiot like him? There's no way Jean would want to marry him after this. Impossible.
"Forget it, it's nonsense, you should be hard to… Oh…"
Jeremy looks at Jean, who looks away, his lips pressed tightly together. Of course, Jeremy doesn't know any man who doesn't appreciate a compliment on his manhood, including himself.
And that's a good way to distract Jean, anyway, so…
The next day, Laila sees the measuring device.
"You were supposed to measure his finger, Jeremy, not his wrist."
Jeremy is about to clarify that it's not Jean's wrist measurement, but he doesn't think Laila cares to know.
