my partner uses they/them pronouns and is black. everyone i know has automatically assumed they were white, feminine and slim, but the moment these people found out my partner is black? theyre suddenly masculine, suddenly they use masculine pronouns, suddenly they arent slim, suddenly theyre tough and scary.

no matter what, theyre pushed into some sort of binary instead of just being gender neutral, and it seems whenever theyre assumed to be feminine, that assumption comes with the idea that they are white.

I was wondering if you could tell me what colour you would classify my old man, Blu, as? He is an Appaloosa gelding, about 22 years old. We’ve had him since he was 5 and he has just gotten greyer and greyer every year. He was almost fully black when we got him. Poor thing has been out of work for the last couple of years (6 abscesses in a year, ulcers, diagnosed with Cushings, and survived Potomac this summer). He is the best boy personality-wise even if his conformation is a bit wonky (he’s always had high withers and a skinny neck with a bad topline). He’s a teacher and we have had so many years together, but I’ve never been sure of his colour. Coggins calls him a roan, but I’m not convinced. Any thoughts?
