Weiss was seriously starting to consider the possibility that she might be in over her head. Traveling to another kingdom because a wizard had told her to was one thing. Walking on foot for several days to reach the destroyed remains of a once prestigious huntsmen academy was another. But now she found herself trying to keep her balance as she inched down the side of a disturbingly large crater right where Beaconâs central tower was supposed to have been. It was enough to make her ask what exactly had become of her life.
Ruby and Oscar were ahead of Weiss farther down in the crater. They had been coping with the steep incline much better than she had, and theyâd made faster progress. Blake and Yang had entered the crater after Weiss. Weiss assumed they were still behind her, but she didnât want to turn her head to look. Her balance was precarious enough as it was. She was glad theyâd thought to leave their heavy backpacks behind before theyâd started shuffling down the slope.
Weiss took a few more cautious steps forward. She could see that Ruby and Oscar were just reaching the bottom of the crater where there appeared to be some kind of hole in the ground. Weiss shuffled forward a little faster, eager to get to the bottom as well, but that turned out to be a mistake. The dirt beneath her feet shifted unexpectedly, and she lost what little was left of her footing.

Oscar slammed his cane into the chest of a beowolf as it lunged at him, and the wolf-like grimm reeled back in shock. Before the creature even had a chance to recover, Taiâs knuckleduster smashed into it from behind, and the grimm collapsed to the ground. A second beowolf came charging in an instant later, but it was just as quickly cut down by Qrowâs sword.
âKeep moving!â Oscar shouted to his companions. He, Tai, and Qrow were charging through the ruins of Beacon Academy. The abandoned buildings surrounding them were considerably worse for wear, although they were still mostly intact. According to reports, the grimm had been a near constant presence at the campus since the battle that had started the Maiden War, and Oscar had been fully expecting to have to fight his way through them. In fact, heâd been counting on it.
Tai asked, âWhich way are we going?!â
âTo the central tower!â Oscar said. He really hoped his contacts had managed to make all the necessary preparations. There hadnât been time for him to check in with them.
Qrow muttered, âHow come you never take us anywhere nice?â

Weiss was waiting out on the tarmac at one of Atlasâs smaller airdocks. She was feeling particularly impatient at the moment. It had taken a considerable amount of effort from her, Rosalie, and Charles yesterdayânot to mention a considerable amount of moneyâbut theyâd successfully made all the arrangements necessary for a pilgrimage to the ruins of Beacon Academy. Weiss was standing beside the airship sheâd chartered. It was a small passenger liner rather than a private airship like she was used to, but it would have to do. The provisions for the trip had been loaded, and Ruby, Blake, and Yang were already onboard. Now the only thing that was missing was their supposed guide.
Weiss was dressed in her combat outfit, and her dagger was openly sheathed at her waist. The morning sunlight was glinting off of the Dust sewn into her dress. This was only the second time sheâd actually worn the outfit, but she felt it was more suited to traipsing across the world than any of her business or formal wear.
As Weiss continued to wait, Oscar continued to not appear. Feeling increasingly aggravated, Weiss reached into one of the pouches hanging off of her belt and pulled out her scroll. She checked the time which prompted her to frown. Oscar was only a minute away from being late. Maybe sheâd been wrong to trust him after all.

Work in Progress Wednesday
(original post here)
Share something that you're working on. A draft, a snippet, an idea you're currently vibing with. Give the people a peek behind the curtain. Hmm, there's my WIP The Baby Plot that I'm determined to complete this summer, but I think I'll talk about something(s) else for this, the plot bunnies gnawing most at my ankles, vying to be the thing I next work on: My as yet unposted first RWBY fic, For Want of a Nail, currently an around 55,000 word rough draft written mostly in the last two weeks of July 2023 and first week of August 2023. I usually manage about 10,000 words in month, to give an idea of what those two-three weeks were like for me. Why haven't I posted it yet? It needs more work, and I've had other fics demanding my attention. The inline link goes to art I commissioned of a scene from it, and that sneak peek scene is included with the art (written by me, not the artist). Fair warning that it's a dark fic with some fluffy scenes, and that is one of the fluffy ones. There's also my exploration of what Maiden!Yang would be like if it happened, Not Your Sacrifice, and that's very much not fun for her or her loved ones, but hopefully will be rather more fun to read. Also there's Yellow Beauty Burns Gold, about a headcanon of mine that it's Yang's Semblance that turns her hair golden blonde, and if she doesn't use it for long enough it'll fade back to the black inherited from Raven. Incidentally there's at least several months where she doesn't use it after Volume 3... (And there's the top secret thing to get revange! on @starlightsaphron, she knows what she did, and I haven't forgotten (alas, I need brainbleach) or forgiven. I think it'll end up being posted as 'Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings' because I don't know how else to make sure there's no spoilers in the warnings and tags. I'm assured it sounds painful by a certain someone I discussed the idea with :3)
AND/OR Share a work in progress from someone else that you're excited about. Talk about what you're looking forward to or hoping for. Give the creator a shout out or a pep talk. @electronicyarn's A Different Shade of RWBY. There's many things I'm looking forward to but most of all more Bees! Yes, Yarn, I know there's just been some, however there was Bees withdrawal for so long, and I can never have enough Bees! More, pretty pls!
AND/OR Tell a creator directly that you love their WIP and why you love it - either in a comment or an ask or in tags on a post. Yarn again, just to keep things simple, because I'm pretty sure I already do that by commenting on Shade.
BONUS: share a prompt that you're never going to fill yourself (for whatever reason) and tell folks to run with it. Quite simply because I'm highly unlikely to write anything that isn't Bees or Yang centric: Qrow Branwen searching for his potential offspring after learning his vasectomy healed itself.
Have fun!
First of all, thank you! Iâm blushing! Second of all, you want more Bees? You want more Bees! Oh, ho-ho-ho, Iâll give you Bees. Thereâs a Bees chapter Iâve been waiting for over two years to write! Itâs so close now! Itâs almost within my grasp! Ehhehhehehehhehe.
(Iâm very intrigued by For Want of a Nail and Yellow Beauty Burns Gold.)

Ruby honestly had no idea what she was supposed to be feeling at the moment. She and her team were all in the conference room at Weissâs office, waiting for Oscar to make his appearance. Ruby was trying to be hopeful, optimistic even, but it seemed that all she could manage at the moment was apprehension.
Despite all the chairs surrounding the conference table in the center of the room, no one was sitting. Yang was leaning against a wall with her arms crossed. Blake had claimed her customary corner in the back. Weiss was standing by the roomâs closed door, staring intently at it. And Ruby herself was skulking behind Weiss, nervously wringing her hands.
Ruby was shocked by how easy it had been for her to forget that the Hound existed while sheâd been all wrapped up in her wedding, but now, reality had rudely come calling. The news story about that poor woman with silver eyes had really driven home for Ruby how inescapable the Hound was. She couldnât tell if she was being paranoid, but she was utterly convinced that the Hound would find her sooner or later, whether she was ready for it or not.

While Weiss had no regrets about being dismissed from her familyâs company, she did have to admit that she missed getting to indulge in the art of hosting a press conference. It was something she felt that sheâd been particularly good at. It was true that her charitable work allowed her to speak in front of an audience from time to time, but it wasnât really the same. However, it certainly was closer to her old job than what she was doing at the moment.
Weiss was standing center stage, such as it was, in Blake and Yangâs living room. While the room wasnât nearly as grand as even a modest press room, Weiss was at least pleased to see that it had finally been properly painted and decorated. The dĂŠcor wasnât exactly to her taste, but that didnât matter. What was important was that the room looked like a place where Blake and Yang lived now rather than a place where they existed.
Blake and Yang themselves were presently seated on their couch, sitting shoulder to shoulder and holding hands. Ruby was there too, sitting next to Yang, and all three of them had been listening to Weiss bring them up to speed on the Houndâs latest attack and what Rosalie had told her regarding Silver-Eyed Warriors, Salem, and Oscar. Each member of Weissâs audience had a different expression on their face. Ruby looked forlorn. Blake looked resigned. And Yang looked determined.

Yangâs feathers glinted in the morning sunlight as she soared high above the city of Atlas. She couldnât even remember the last time sheâd flown just for the fun of it. Sheâd forgotten how exhilarating it was. It was just a shame that she couldnât share the experience with anyone else. Maybe someday sheâd find a way.
Yang flapped her wings harder and started to pour on the speed. She swooped into a thermal and let it carry her up even higher into the sky. Then she spread her wings out wide and settled into a glide as she watched the city drift by far below her.
It wouldâve been difficult for Yang to describe how happy she was at that exact moment. A few hours ago sheâd woken up in bed with Blake. That simple fact alone was enough to make her ecstatic; to say nothing of knowing that sheâd get to do the exact same thing again tomorrow. Just seeing Blake lying there had taken Yangâs breath away.
Blake was not an early riser by nature, and so Yang had lain in bed for a while so she could watch her sleep. However, Yang had eventually felt the urge to get up and actually do something. It had taken her a good few minutes to extract herself from the bed without disturbing Blake, but sheâd managed to do it. Sheâd originally intended to wait for Blake to wake up as well, but sheâd been too full of energy to just sit still for that long. Instead, sheâd left some breakfast out for Blake and gone on a morning flight.

Weiss was sitting in her office in downtown Atlas. While her work ethic hadnât changed since her days at the Schnee Dust Company, her workspace certainly had. The glass and straight lines that had dominated her old office had been replaced with postmodernist curves and beautifully burnished wood. The dĂŠcor might have been out of step with fashionable trends, but Weiss didnât deign to care. She had a conference room to meet her clients in now and no longer had to worry about impressing the executives. She was finally free to decorate her office however she wanted.
The console built into Weissâs desk was currently turned on, and Weiss was paging through the hundreds of pictures that the photographer sheâd hired had snapped at her wedding. Amazingly, she wasnât browsing the photos just for the enjoyment of it. She was in the process of selecting a number of pictures to send to the press.
Unfortunately, even if Weiss had married a man, her wedding wouldâve been big news in the social gossip section of just about any media outlet. The fact that sheâd married a woman had turned it into the story of the century to the kinds of people who concerned themselves with such nonsense. In short, every news outlet in Atlas, and possibly beyond, would be talking about her wedding in at least some capacity, and providing them with a carefully curated collection of photographs that represented the wedding the way Weiss wanted it to be represented was one of the few tools she had to exert any kind of control over the narrative. As a bonus, some of the photos could also be used to promote the wedding planning side of her business.

Blake was standing at a window in the cabin that Weiss had assigned to her. Her tired eyes were staring out at nothing in particular. While she appreciated Weiss providing her with a room at the resort, it had turned out to be completely unnecessary. She hadnât slept one bit last night. Sheâd simply stood right where she was for hours on end.
It was morning outside, and the sun was continuing its achingly slow journey through the sky. Unbeknownst to Blake, Ruby and Weiss were just now waking up to their first full day of marriage. Even if she had known, she didnât have the wherewithal to care much. Hardly a thought was passing through her head, and time had lost all meaning to her. Her entire existence was simply one of numbing grief and crushing regret.
The perfect stillness of Blakeâs cabin was suddenly interrupted by a knock on the door. Blake didnât move. She hadnât even heard the sound.
A second knock followed, and Blake suddenly snapped back to the present with a start. She quickly turned toward the door, perhaps too quickly. Her muscles started to complain about the sudden motion after theyâd been kept perfectly still for so long.

Rubyâs eyes slowly opened. She blinked a few times against the morning sunlight as she lazily sat up in bed and let out a yawn. She was confused at first about why she wasnât at her and Weissâs penthouse, but then she realized she must still be at the resort.
A jolt of excitement suddenly hit Ruby as she remembered that sheâd gotten married last night. However, there was a distinct lack of Weiss in the bed with her, and Ruby wanted to know why. She was a little concerned that she might have dreamed up the whole thing. She glanced around and quickly spotted a pair of rings resting on a nearby nightstand next to the bed. She scooted in closer so she could get a better look at them. One of the rings was clearly hers with its red ruby and white diamond set side-by-side, and she also recognized the unadorned band sheâd bought for Weiss. Ruby quickly realized that both of the rings sitting there had to mean that yesterday had really happened. Sheâd actually married Weiss.
âWowâŚâ Ruby quietly said.
A door on the other side of the cabin swung open, drawing Rubyâs attention away from the rings. If Ruby remembered correctly, the door led to one of the cabinâs bathrooms. Her suspicions were confirmed when Weiss walked through the door with a hairbrush in her hand. Weiss was dressed in her nightgown, and her long strands of hair were hanging loose, much to Rubyâs delight. Weiss was holding the bottom portion of her hair in front of her, and she was meticulously brushing out the ends of it. There was a distinct waviness to Weissâs hair that wasnât usually there, no doubt from all the braids sheâd been wearing yesterday.

Not doing what I'm supposed to be doing, part two
Honestly? Numbers one and three are completely plausible.
I made some silly art, something I started back in early 2024 but only finished recently.
It's fan art inspired by @electronicyarn's fic series A Different Shade of RWBY (recommended reading!), but not actually inspired by any scene so far. I have no knowledge whether it will ever happen either.
Behold my silly art, titled Yang's Exes:
Live Yang reaction:
There's a few differences from canon that I'll explain under a read more cut. Also warning for Shade spoilers if you haven't read it yet.
Yes! Fanart! Thank you so much! And yes, Yang would've reacted very differently if Blake hadn't been involved. =P

The door to the cabin that Winter had been assigned to at the resort opened, and Winter stepped inside. She was followed by Yang who was still holding her hand. This cabin wasnât quite as large as Weiss and Rubyâs honeymoon suite. However, it was luxurious in its own way, and the moonlight shining through the window shades gave the atmosphere a romantic quality.
Yang had to admit that she was still a bit dazzled by what was happening. Winterâs proposition had caught her completely off guard. Sheâd almost turned Winter down on the spot, but as sheâd thought about it, she really didnât have any reason to. She was single after all, as Winter had said. She was also desperate for something a bit more stimulating than the toy she had stashed away back at the condo, and she knew from experience that Winter fit that bill. It was also just so nice to have someone actually interested in her again.
Winter let go of Yangâs hand and shut the door. She gave Yang a look that made it very clear that she was enjoying the sight of her in the moonlight. She gestured toward the bathroom door and asked, âWould you like a moment to refresh yourself?â
A sly grin crossed Yangâs face as her instinct for flirting came back to her. She said, âI think I remember where we left off.â

The reception had finally ended, and the last glow of sunlight had faded from the sky. A clear, beautiful night blanketed the resort that had played host to Weiss and Rubyâs wedding. The moon hung high above in its mended phase. Only the slight jaggedness of one of its edges gave any hint that it was anything less than whole. Weiss, however, was far too preoccupied to take in any of the stunning vistas.
The private rooms at the resort that Weiss had rented for herself and her wedding party were more like private cabins. They all stood loosely collected into a miniature neighborhood surrounded by greenery and flower gardens. Right now Weiss was carrying Ruby toward their cabin bridal-style, and she was doing her best to hide how much she was struggling. It seemed that Ruby was a lot heavier than she looked. Ruby, for her part, was all giddy smiles with her arms hooked around Weissâs shoulders.
Weiss took a few more labored steps toward her and Rubyâs cabin. A pained grunt slipped out of her, despite her best efforts to keep it in.
Ruby giggled. She asked, âDo you want me to carry you?â
âNo!â Weiss said. âI need to be the one to do it.â
âAnother tradition?â Ruby asked.

The reception hall at the site of the Schnee-Rose wedding was absolutely bustling with chatter as the multitude of guests ate, drank, mingled, and gossiped. The lights were dimmed ever so slightly so the glow from the ornate lanterns placed in the middle of each and every table could be seen.
Weiss was sitting at the head table up at the front of the reception hall. She was proud of her ability to multitask, but right now it was being tested. Despite the waning hour, she was finally eating her first meal of the day. Sheâd selected the fish from the many available courses. She was trying not to shove her food into her mouth like a pig, although her ravenous hunger was making that difficult. At the same time she was also doing her best to ignore the two tables right next to each other in one corner of the room that, despite her watchful gaze earlier, had managed to end up with the same color of lanterns on them. But most of all, she was keeping an eye on Ruby. Sheâd made a concerted effort to isolate Ruby from the stupidity and pettiness of high society ever since theyâd started dating. This was Rubyâs first real exposure to the elites of Atlas. Although maybe it wouldâve been more accurate to say that this was the elitesâ first real exposure to Ruby.
Currently, Ruby was being talked at by a pair of bankers who Weiss was well acquainted with. They were bland enough and harmless enough that Weiss was content to leave things alone for now, although Rubyâs polite smile had steadily been growing increasingly forced. Weiss was already counting down to the moment sheâd need to intervene.

The weather couldnât have been more perfect as Yang drove her motorcycle down a wooded street in the swanky part of Atlas. For once, she was rolling along at a downright leisurely pace, and surprisingly, she was loving it. It felt nice to slow down every once in a while. Yang knew that there was a lot she should still be worried about, but her cares and woes seemed distant at the moment. With Ilia locked up and her newfound acceptance of her domestic situation with Blake, Yang felt like two considerable burdens had been lifted from her mind.
There was a passenger on the back of Yangâs motorcycle with their arms around her, and amazingly, it wasnât Blake. Ruby had taken Blakeâs usual seat. She was also borrowing Blakeâs black helmet that matched the yellow one currently on Yangâs head. Crescent Rose was conspicuously absent. Instead, a backpack was in its place on Rubyâs back. Ruby was even dressed in her casual clothes, including one of her fitted red T-shirts and her black skinny jeans. However, Yang knew that Ruby wouldnât be dressed casually for too much longer. After all, the two of them were on their way to Rubyâs wedding.
Yang had been confused yesterday when Weiss had asked her to take Ruby to the wedding venue. Sheâd assumed Weiss and Ruby would go together, but apparently there was some kind of old tradition that the bride and groom werenât supposed to see each other before the ceremony on the day of the big event. Yang didnât understand what the point of that was, especially since this particular wedding didnât have a groom. However, Weiss had insisted, and Ruby had seemed eager to play along.
