Blake was standing at a window in the cabin that Weiss had assigned to her. Her tired eyes were staring out at nothing in particular. While she appreciated Weiss providing her with a room at the resort, it had turned out to be completely unnecessary. She hadn’t slept one bit last night. She’d simply stood right where she was for hours on end.

It was morning outside, and the sun was continuing its achingly slow journey through the sky. Unbeknownst to Blake, Ruby and Weiss were just now waking up to their first full day of marriage. Even if she had known, she didn’t have the wherewithal to care much. Hardly a thought was passing through her head, and time had lost all meaning to her. Her entire existence was simply one of numbing grief and crushing regret.

The perfect stillness of Blake’s cabin was suddenly interrupted by a knock on the door. Blake didn’t move. She hadn’t even heard the sound.

A second knock followed, and Blake suddenly snapped back to the present with a start. She quickly turned toward the door, perhaps too quickly. Her muscles started to complain about the sudden motion after they’d been kept perfectly still for so long.

Ruby’s eyes slowly opened. She blinked a few times against the morning sunlight as she lazily sat up in bed and let out a yawn. She was confused at first about why she wasn’t at her and Weiss’s penthouse, but then she realized she must still be at the resort.

A jolt of excitement suddenly hit Ruby as she remembered that she’d gotten married last night. However, there was a distinct lack of Weiss in the bed with her, and Ruby wanted to know why. She was a little concerned that she might have dreamed up the whole thing. She glanced around and quickly spotted a pair of rings resting on a nearby nightstand next to the bed. She scooted in closer so she could get a better look at them. One of the rings was clearly hers with its red ruby and white diamond set side-by-side, and she also recognized the unadorned band she’d bought for Weiss. Ruby quickly realized that both of the rings sitting there had to mean that yesterday had really happened. She’d actually married Weiss.

“Wow…” Ruby quietly said.

A door on the other side of the cabin swung open, drawing Ruby’s attention away from the rings. If Ruby remembered correctly, the door led to one of the cabin’s bathrooms. Her suspicions were confirmed when Weiss walked through the door with a hairbrush in her hand. Weiss was dressed in her nightgown, and her long strands of hair were hanging loose, much to Ruby’s delight. Weiss was holding the bottom portion of her hair in front of her, and she was meticulously brushing out the ends of it. There was a distinct waviness to Weiss’s hair that wasn’t usually there, no doubt from all the braids she’d been wearing yesterday.

The door to the cabin that Winter had been assigned to at the resort opened, and Winter stepped inside. She was followed by Yang who was still holding her hand. This cabin wasn’t quite as large as Weiss and Ruby’s honeymoon suite. However, it was luxurious in its own way, and the moonlight shining through the window shades gave the atmosphere a romantic quality.

Yang had to admit that she was still a bit dazzled by what was happening. Winter’s proposition had caught her completely off guard. She’d almost turned Winter down on the spot, but as she’d thought about it, she really didn’t have any reason to. She was single after all, as Winter had said. She was also desperate for something a bit more stimulating than the toy she had stashed away back at the condo, and she knew from experience that Winter fit that bill. It was also just so nice to have someone actually interested in her again.

Winter let go of Yang’s hand and shut the door. She gave Yang a look that made it very clear that she was enjoying the sight of her in the moonlight. She gestured toward the bathroom door and asked, “Would you like a moment to refresh yourself?”

A sly grin crossed Yang’s face as her instinct for flirting came back to her. She said, “I think I remember where we left off.”

The reception had finally ended, and the last glow of sunlight had faded from the sky.  A clear, beautiful night blanketed the resort that had played host to Weiss and Ruby’s wedding. The moon hung high above in its mended phase. Only the slight jaggedness of one of its edges gave any hint that it was anything less than whole. Weiss, however, was far too preoccupied to take in any of the stunning vistas.

The private rooms at the resort that Weiss had rented for herself and her wedding party were more like private cabins. They all stood loosely collected into a miniature neighborhood surrounded by greenery and flower gardens. Right now Weiss was carrying Ruby toward their cabin bridal-style, and she was doing her best to hide how much she was struggling. It seemed that Ruby was a lot heavier than she looked. Ruby, for her part, was all giddy smiles with her arms hooked around Weiss’s shoulders.

Weiss took a few more labored steps toward her and Ruby’s cabin. A pained grunt slipped out of her, despite her best efforts to keep it in.

Ruby giggled. She asked, “Do you want me to carry you?”

“No!” Weiss said. “I need to be the one to do it.”

“Another tradition?” Ruby asked.

The reception hall at the site of the Schnee-Rose wedding was absolutely bustling with chatter as the multitude of guests ate, drank, mingled, and gossiped. The lights were dimmed ever so slightly so the glow from the ornate lanterns placed in the middle of each and every table could be seen.

Weiss was sitting at the head table up at the front of the reception hall. She was proud of her ability to multitask, but right now it was being tested. Despite the waning hour, she was finally eating her first meal of the day. She’d selected the fish from the many available courses. She was trying not to shove her food into her mouth like a pig, although her ravenous hunger was making that difficult. At the same time she was also doing her best to ignore the two tables right next to each other in one corner of the room that, despite her watchful gaze earlier, had managed to end up with the same color of lanterns on them. But most of all, she was keeping an eye on Ruby. She’d made a concerted effort to isolate Ruby from the stupidity and pettiness of high society ever since they’d started dating. This was Ruby’s first real exposure to the elites of Atlas. Although maybe it would’ve been more accurate to say that this was the elites’ first real exposure to Ruby.

Currently, Ruby was being talked at by a pair of bankers who Weiss was well acquainted with. They were bland enough and harmless enough that Weiss was content to leave things alone for now, although Ruby’s polite smile had steadily been growing increasingly forced. Weiss was already counting down to the moment she’d need to intervene.

The weather couldn’t have been more perfect as Yang drove her motorcycle down a wooded street in the swanky part of Atlas. For once, she was rolling along at a downright leisurely pace, and surprisingly, she was loving it. It felt nice to slow down every once in a while. Yang knew that there was a lot she should still be worried about, but her cares and woes seemed distant at the moment. With Ilia locked up and her newfound acceptance of her domestic situation with Blake, Yang felt like two considerable burdens had been lifted from her mind.

There was a passenger on the back of Yang’s motorcycle with their arms around her, and amazingly, it wasn’t Blake. Ruby had taken Blake’s usual seat. She was also borrowing Blake’s black helmet that matched the yellow one currently on Yang’s head. Crescent Rose was conspicuously absent. Instead, a backpack was in its place on Ruby’s back. Ruby was even dressed in her casual clothes, including one of her fitted red T-shirts and her black skinny jeans. However, Yang knew that Ruby wouldn’t be dressed casually for too much longer. After all, the two of them were on their way to Ruby’s wedding.

Yang had been confused yesterday when Weiss had asked her to take Ruby to the wedding venue. She’d assumed Weiss and Ruby would go together, but apparently there was some kind of old tradition that the bride and groom weren’t supposed to see each other before the ceremony on the day of the big event. Yang didn’t understand what the point of that was, especially since this particular wedding didn’t have a groom. However, Weiss had insisted, and Ruby had seemed eager to play along.

The relentless hail of gunfire the police were pumping into the Black Fang’s apartment hideout somehow sounded even louder inside the building than it had from the outside. Blake was eager to move deeper into the apartment and away from the whizzing bullets. She hastily turned around in the tiny room she’d entered and offered Yang a hand through the broken window. Yang clasped Blake’s arm and climbed inside. May followed a moment later. The bubble of her invisibility field moved with her.

A bullet suddenly screamed into the room and flew right in between Blake’s and May’s heads before embedding itself in a nearby wall. May jerked back in alarm, and her mouth squeezed shut, presumably swallowing a scream. Blake nodded toward the doorway. Everyone quickly walked through it and out into a narrow hallway.

It was extremely dark in the hallway, although thankfully not to the point that Blake was having trouble seeing. Some illumination was filtering in through the occasional open doorway from the exterior rooms, but the walls and floor were so blackened with soot that they seemed to hungrily swallow most of the light up.

Evening had come, and Blake was standing in the living room of her and Yang’s condo. She could hardly believe how different it looked. It wasn’t even really the same room anymore. The once-empty space had come alive.

The living room’s walls had been painted a deep red color. The last of the paint had only just finished drying a few hours ago. Several potted plants were dotted around the space, and a large bookshelf stood by one of the walls. The bookshelf was mostly empty at the moment, but Blake had plans to fix that. Reading had been one of her passions once, what felt like a lifetime ago. She didn’t see why it couldn’t be again. The room’s old couch and coffee table had also been replaced with newer ones that matched the rest of the new décor, and an area rug on the floor gave the space that extra bit of warmth and coziness.

Blake hadn’t realized it until she and Yang had finished decorating, but the room now reminded her of her childhood home back on Menagerie. The resemblance had prompted her to think about her parents for the first time in years. She’d had a bit of a falling out with them after Ghira, her father, had been ousted as the High Leader of the White Fang. He had never stopped insisting that his philosophy of peaceful resistance would work. At the time, Blake had agreed with Sienna’s more proactive leadership. She still did, if she was perfectly honest with herself. She wondered from time to time what might have happened if Adam had never betrayed Sienna and sent the High Leader down a much darker path. Blake’s hand briefly came up and brushed against the scars on her left cheek.

Weiss was sitting at a conference table, and for once, it wasn’t hers. This one happened to be in a room that was several stories up in a downtown high-rise. The building was one of several from which Atlas’s government administered the kingdom. Weiss was waiting for Councilwoman Robyn Hill to make her appearance so that they could discuss putting an end to the Black Fang once and for all.

Weiss wasn’t waiting alone in the conference room. Blake was there too. She was seated in the chair next to Weiss’s, and she was doing an exceptional job of putting up a stoic front. However, her finger was nervously tapping on the table, giving her away. Weiss supposed she couldn’t blame Blake for being nervous. As she understood it, Blake had spent most of her life fighting against authority. Sitting in a government building, waiting to meet with a member of the ruling council, had to be a surreal experience for her.

Yang was notably absent from the meeting. She was back at Weiss’s penthouse with Ruby. Weiss didn’t think the Hound knew where Ruby lived, but that didn’t mean she was willing to leave Ruby home all by herself. It had actually been a bit of a dilemma for her since she also hadn’t been willing to let Blake and Yang meet with Councilwoman Hill on their own. She could just imagine the misunderstandings that would happen if she wasn’t there. Fortunately, Yang had agreed to stay behind and keep an eye on Ruby.

Yang was sitting on the couch in the living room of her and Blake’s condo with her arms crossed and a scowl on her face. The bright morning sunlight that was flooding in through the window wasn’t doing anything to lift her mood. Every few minutes she would glance at the front door, but it would inevitably be closed.

Blake was out. She’d told Yang that she was going to buy some groceries. Yang had believed her, mostly because they really were out of food. However, she still couldn’t rest easy. She knew that not all was as it seemed. Blake had been sneaking out at night these past few days.

Yang had only found out about Blake’s nighttime adventures by sheer accident. She’d had trouble sleeping the day after her encounter with the Hound, and she’d heard Blake quietly leaving. She hadn’t confronted Blake about it yet, but she knew that Blake had to be doing something related to the Black Fang. Fortunately, Yang didn’t think that Blake would actually try to confront Ilia again all on her own. However, just because Blake didn’t intend to put herself in danger didn’t mean that she wasn’t in danger.

“Why are we even talking about this!?” Yang angrily shouted.

Weiss said, “I could ask you the same question.”

All of Team RWBY was in the conference room in Weiss’s office. Yang and Weiss were staring each other down, standing practically nose-to-nose. Blake was quietly leaning against a wall, unobtrusively tucked away in one corner of the room, and Ruby was awkwardly watching Yang and Weiss’s debate. Their argument had started long before they’d arrived at Weiss’s office, and it hadn’t shown any sign of stopping anytime soon.

Ruby still couldn’t believe how quickly today had gone from bad to worse. Amazingly, the Hound attacking her where she’d thought she’d be safe had somehow only been the beginning of her troubles. Yang had wanted to follow after Oscar, Ren, and Nora from the moment they’d jumped into that manhole to go after the Hound. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, Winter had stepped in and told Yang in no uncertain terms that she was not to enter the sewer. Yang had actually listened to Winter, much to Ruby’s utter amazement. She’d never seen Yang care at all what an authority figure had to say. However, Yang's deference to Winter clearly had its limits as she’d immediately started arguing with her. That had prompted Weiss to take her sister’s side, and Yang and Weiss’s bickering had escalated from there. All poor Ruby had been able to do was silently stand there. Blake had, of course, said nothing.
