Chapter summary: The master sorcerer Val has been working on an enchanted kitchen which he had previously described as "very messy". He would have wanted Adrien to see it tidy, but maybe it's time for him to start seeing glimpses of the less tidy Val... and even help him with that.

Author's retrospective: A chapter full of many silly things and a change in setting, but there's also some stealth plotpoints being set up here. Meet the talking floating wooden spoon.

(sigh) Also, when Val calls his kitchen "magically-imbued intelligence", I would like to remind you that this was written in 2019 (and earlier)... things he says later further explain that the comparison is with programming, which I have experience with, and not with genAI which did not even exist yet when I wrote this part. Although those real life developments did force me to rewrite the end of this subplot, but that's something for a chapter that I haven't drawn yet.

Tagged by @intyaliel and @sulphuricgrin Today I have a short piece of the dream topic for @tes-season-unending-fest. I plan a rather sad oneshot, but the silver lining of this story should be the first sprout of friendship between Rahgot (who suffers from PTSD) and Nahkriin (who suffers in general). In my headcanon, Nahkriin later became ready to sacrifice his life to buy Rahgot some time. Also, he is a genuinely caring and polite person... But not here. Here he is a bitch.

"Could you recommend something to help with nightmares? Seals, spells, amulets.

“Why? Did you mortally offend one of Vermina’s champions? Or maybe desecrate her altar?”

“I don’t think so.”

“Then your problem must be connected to Hermaeus? He rarely interferes with dreams, but can lure you into the Apocrypha through them if you pick his interest. The mask should protect you from most influences, but if your connection to it has weakened, you could indeed be in trouble. Have you noticed anything strange? Maybe you’ve felt like you were being watched?

"This case isn't connected to any Daedra."

“So, why do you need the seals? Get to the point, please. The road to Skuldafn isn’t short, and I’d like to rest before setting out, since I’m leaving at dawn.”

“You’re a healer. Isn’t it a sin for a healer to refuse to help those in need?”

“Find a more comfortable pillow,” Nahkriin said, turning a long wooden pipe between his fingers with a critical eye. Then he lit it. “Let’s be honest. This is our first private conversation since I joined the Council, which happened three years ago. I don’t insist on communication, but when it starts so suddenly and on such an unexpected topic, it… raises some questions. You didn’t come here to talk about dreams, did you?”
