Tabula Rasa re-worked?
Since flying the nest over a year ago, I have had to make some serious changes to the way I go about dressing. The money that used to go towards disposable trendy pieces now pays bills and runs a home. But that's not the only reason I don't buy mass-produced clothing any more.
Yes for starters, such clothing that is sold in boutiques around Australia is whole-sale, picked straight from the catalogue of mass-produced factories in China, India and Bali where poor souls get paid pity in comparison to how much a garment is sold to you, the consumer.
Secondly, these items are mass-produced. Therefore, the rate at which a garment is produced is far more important than the quality of assembly. It's a pity that a really nice top I bought off Asos is tearing and falling apart, all because the needle was too large and the thread tension was too tight, causing it to fall apart with such little wear.
Thirdly, trends are that, trends. There are sections in magazines dedicated to how you can pair "that floral peplum" with this seasons asymmetrical skort." I don't like buying trending garments because I feel like every man and his dog. The peplum is a great little number, but when I pair one with jeans I feel lazy, as if I haven't tried to dress myself properly. This, yes this is vain. And slightly "hipster." Hah. Maybe I'll play with florals in a few years.
So with all this rambling, what I'm trying to tell myself is, do not buy trends. Buy garments. Or make them. Re-invent what you already have. I tried to not buy anything for a whole year. That failed. Namely thanks to 21st season. But on here I will reason and beg with myself as to why I should be allowed to buy anything. Yep...this will be an open monologue for you to chuckle at.
It will also be my homework arena for TAFE and general inspirations or what I make and choose to share with the www.
This is the most interesting thing I have read recently.
Sorry A Wang, you do make beautiful clothes, but that is all you do. There is little about the fashion world that is innovative, if anything it's a re-run.
