EINDBAAS' adventure time

Belgium, Dour festival, 2004. A girlfriend found two all-access backstage bracelets on the ground. She gave one to me. I walked past all security into the backstage, carelessly. I climbed up to the main stage, where stoner rock band Monster Magnet was playing. I walked up to them as close as I could get, until I could almost touch the drummer. I saw a sea of thousands of happy faces and waving arms under a beautiful sun set and I made a wish: one day, I’m going to be a rockstar too, so I can have exactly this!

There’s just nothing better than the raving energy of thousands of people hitting right back at you, for the awesome music you give to them. Stardom. Goood. 

Today is the day this wish comes true, in the most unexpected way. I haven’t become a star, and neither did Frans, but I have my huge crowd, and it feels exactly the same as back in 2004. It also feels like cheating, but who cares. An EINDBAAS DJ set at VJ op de Dom must be the most megalomanic experience we’ve ever had. Fun!

First of all, it’s on a big church. It’s right in front of the biggest church tower in Utrecht: the Dom. Earlier that week, me, Chris and Rocco had lots of fun climbing its 465 steps in a guided tour. Imagine the view (= awesome)! Combining this with another random fact that happened during EINDBAAS X: a fan wearing a custom made shirt with Frans’ facebook avatar on the back, saying “There is a God”, one can only conclude that God is a DJ. Being a god is hard work though. Frans has been working for two weeks on end to get the ultimate DJ set exactly right, with the great help of Chris, without whom we never would have made it. 

Our super hero game animator Paul Veer did a great job designing a unique game interface to project on the tower, in which a little masked thief rampaged around on a masked ball, stealing all the masks from the guests. We are very proud of him, because this was his first VJ job ever! It was all nicely video-mapped by VJ Anna Gentenaar, and with two very powerful beamers, stuff really came to life. And in the middle of all this at the base of the tower, there’s Frans, mixing all our favorite music like a boss: FantomenK, Ultrasyd, cTrix, Radlib, Covox, Henry Homesweet... Thousands of people probably had no idea what they listened to, but they all danced and smiled. Score!

As soon as the virtual thief jumps out of the picture, that’s where I come in. I never played a more fun part than that of a masked thief! I stole Frans’ mask, jumped up and down, and hurled EINDBAAS posters into the crowd. Not that it’s very special, but with so many people it’s... Different. I can heartily recommend it to everyone, as a do before you die. 

These last two weeks have been an episode with only highlights for EINDBAAS. I feel so lucky to be part of this! A little decompression two days later, as we played some chiptunes in the bowling court (8-bit bowling), was a well deserved wind-up.

The day has finally come! It’s the day of the 10th edition of the legendary EINDBAAS! The tickets have been sold out two weeks in advance. In the days prior to the event, there’s a frantic online trade of tickets taking place between desperate individuals. I get e-mails with supplications every day of people wanting to get in, but missed the boat somehow. It’s crazy.

Therefore, we have been working hard to find a bigger venue. We love the Ekko, but it feels like a favorite jacket that we’ve obviously grown out of. And it’s never easy to find a fitting replacement for your favorite jacket.

Just as hard, was to find a good spot for the famous EINDBAAS open stage, prior to the big event. Because our usual spot De Kargadoor was already booked that evening, we had to ask three other venues before we found Biton prepared to work with us on the open stage. And it turned out to be an excellent choice! Perfect size, the volunteers were really nice to work with, and the sound was ok. Except when our most internationally seasoned guest entered the stage: Monodeer. Somebody thought it was wise to turn the volume down during his brilliant-and-loud-as-always set. Which is the absolute worst thing to do if you want to piss off Monodeer. Poor Mark. But I was also very surprised in more positive ways, by the soothing synths of Tempianetic (a.k.a Flamingo Pudding, a name that for some reason sticks infinitely better with me than Tempianetic) and the pure Nintendo DS fun machine that’s called HarleyLikesMusic. Honored, because he came all the way from Sheffield. 

While the people in Biton partied some more with a fine encore by Men of Mega and viewing of the live stream of EINDBAAS X, we quickly moved back to the Ekko venue, where we have been working very hard all afternoon to do soundchecks, interviews with the press, install the live stream and what have you, and booby-trap the place with lots of lasers. The long queue waiting on the street is a familiar sight. Hello queue, long time no see, how are you doing? Syked for tonight?

Personally, having an EINDBAAS is like having the perfect birthday party. Half of the room is filled with friends, who are (very much unlike real birthdays) all there! The other half I’ve never seen before, which is even better. 

Xyce kicked off with a really convincing set full of bleepy sweetness from good old Atari ST and his girlfriend Amiga. I can’t imagine a chip act in the Netherlands that makes me happier than these demo scene geeks Roel and Tom, except for chip god Jeroen Tel maybe... Xyce is not for you if you like it raw and loud. What they do provide, is a imaginary trip back straight into your best childhood memories of the eighties: your favorite cartoons and high school series on TV, video games with your best buddy, puppy love, unicorns and tv-striped multi-color madness. 

There’s an invisible man from Sweden, that appears to be very famous... His name is FantomenK and everybody knows him, but nobody’s ever seen him. He hardly ever leaves Sweden and rarely performs live. Having him on the EINDBAAS stage is such a rare treat! And even up there, he’s like a ninja: cunningly masked and vanishing just as quick as he appeared, leaving the crowd in pure awe and pierced with his evil eye. Wtf just happened? 

And speaking of piercing lightbeams: lasers lasers lasers everywhere! Our laser dream team Hobbybob and Master PJ555. Having them VJ-ing with actual lasers is a whole new deal, turning the Ekko into a nineties rave party. 

Now that’s a true chip giant. Ctrix caused the EINDBAAS team several spontaneous livingroom dancing sessions, ecstatic climaxes at chip parties in New York, the starting point for almost every EINDBAAS DJ set and a happier life in general. And now he’s standing there at our own little chiptune party in Utrecht, with a perfectly working gAtari, for God's sake! The crafty modded portable Atari ‘thing’ turns every chip party in a wild rave, with its sharp barking and roaring sounds. Too bad that he had to pull out his best weapon at the start of his set, making the rest of his show sound a bit less powerful. Very understandable though, taking into account that the gAtari doesn’t work halve of the times, including the soundcheck. But still the other halve was better than most things I’ve heard so far. The sublime combinations of funky synths and bouncy chiptunes, with a delicious hint of nineties house nostalgia (whoo. yeah.) proves that this little ozzie is still the undisputed world champion of chip. 

The loudest contribution this night is from the Canadian Deadbeatblast. He did a great job, doing all the additional VJ-ing for the other artists tonight, especially with the funny ninja stuff for FantomenK. A Deadbeatblast show is a very intense experience, because his music is kind of demanding. If you don’t like chiptunes, don’t go see him. The virtuoso stuff he forces out of his Gameboy is noisy, but very rich in melody, that can either drive you crazy or gets you ecstatic. Tonight, its was obviously the latter and it was my personal high light of EINDBAAS X. Brilliant! 

That’s it. Lasers lasered, Timbob did very good business at Timbob’s chipshop, we’ve danced to all our favorite artists, EINDBAAS X was no less than legendary. One to remember and tell your grandkids about.

The last two weeks have been a trip for the EINDBAAS crew. It started with a little road trip to Darmstadt in Germany, then builded up to a climax a week later at EINDBAAS X, to top it of with the rather megalomanic experience of an EINDBAAS DJ set at VJ op de Dom in our beloved hometown Utrecht. But first things first: road tripping to Chipnyte in Darmstadt!

It’s so good to be reunited with far away friends! First in: Deadbeat Jake. And the next day cTrix Chris arrived. Having the best parts of Canada and Australia united in Utrecht, it’s time for beers in Cafe België. Summarized: 

Timbob (EINDBAAS’ scruffy roommate and no. 1 Gameboy provider of the Netherlands) trying out every fruit beer in the cafe.

The next day we got all crammed into Men of Mega Bart’s car, ready to head out to the Chipnyte party in Darmstadt. Being a five hour drive, it was hard to find the right position, but who cares: we’re going to a chiptune paaaaartyyyy! Jake turned out to be an excellent driver (his own words) so the others could have beers, naps and write music for weekly beats. 

Darmstadt is a typical mid-German city, which is hard to describe otherwise, if you’ve never been in Germany. Turns out the show was in the basement of a frigging castle! And if you think that resonates, think again. The sound was superb and most of all, loud in a good way. The organizer of the party is chip fanatic Niels Cassens. Not a man of many words, but he sure knows how to put up a show. The line-up was almost one on one with the EINDBAAS X show a week later, with addition of the German screamo chip duo Stern Fucking Zeit. Excellent stuff. The others were at their best behavior too: Xyce was ever so charming, Men of Mega solo was just as good as the Men of Mega duo, cTrix is still my favorite songwriter in the world and Deadbeatblast was on fire. With 250 visitors, Niels did an outstanding job for a first chip party in Darmstadt.

Stel, je bent dj en/of organisator en je feesten best lopen best goed, maar je wilt je concept eens in het buitenland uitproberen. Hoe doe je dat? Eindbaas stond drie maanden geleden voor deze vraag en inmiddels heeft de eerste editie in New York met succes plaatsgevonden. Zonder budget, zonder boeker, zonder promotor en zonder agentschap op locatie. Dat hebben mijn maatje Frans Twisk en ik namelijk allemaal zelf gedaan.

Eindbaas opereert in het obscure genre der chiptunes. Voor wie niet weten wat dat is, heel kort: oude spelcomputers, 8-bit geluids-chips, artiest, party. We geven drie keer per jaar goedlopende feesten in de Ekko in Utrecht en zijn daarnaast als dj’s actief op feesten en festivals. Zoals bij veel nieuwe elektronische genres is chiptunes een scene die op internetfora is ontstaan. Als gevolg daarvan zijn er overal op de wereld kernen waar chiptunes erg groot is, in plaats van in één specifieke stad. Een van de grootste kernen bevindt zich niettemin in New York, waar jaarlijks het grootste festival ter wereld wordt georganiseerd op het gebied van chiptunes, Blip. Het leek ons een goed idee om daar, bij wijze van afterparty, dan maar meteen een Eindbaas achteraan te doen, als al die internationale artiesten en fans daar dan toch nog rondhangen.

Wel, een beetje budget, een killer line-up en het belangrijkste: een goed netwerk op locatie. Dat laatste hebben we in in een jaar tijd opgebouwd en warm gehouden. We waren in 2011 ook op het Blip-festival, waar veel vrienden maken een fluitje van een cent is. Eerlijk waar, er is geen warmere scene dan chiptunes. Een van de mensen die het meest voor ons gedaan heeft, hebben we daar ontmoet. Omdat we grote fan van hem zijn, hebben we hem als artiest (Deadbeatblast, foto boven) dit jaar twee keer geboekt voor Eindbaas, zowel in New York als in Utrecht. Hij wilde waarschijnlijk iets aardigs terug doen.

Een retourtje New York, het festival, verblijf, huur van de locatie en bier zijn hier niet goedkoop. Toch hebben we zelf weinig hoeven toeleggen omdat we ver van te voren de vlucht geboekt hebben, overnacht hebben bij vrienden, voldoende merchandise hebben meegenomen, en het kleine beetje dat we met draaien hebben verdiend in vliegtickets hebben omgezet. In New York is het extreem moeilijk om op korte termijn een podium te regelen, maar onze gewiekste contactpersoon is het gelukt bij een plek in Brooklyn genaamd The Trash Bar, die er precies zo uit zag als het klinkt. Hij heeft bovendien een goede deal kunnen sluiten waardoor we onze artiesten zelfs hebben kunnen uitbetalen, iets dat niet gebruikelijk is bij ondergrondse feestjes hier.

We hebben van te voren onze favoriete Nederlandse artiesten helemaal gek gemaakt met het New York-verhaal, zodat ze uiteindelijk ook een ticket kochten om op ons feest te spelen. Ze hebben er bovendien allemaal meerdere optredens kunnen uitslepen, waardoor het reisje voor hun nog best lucratief was. Naast het presenteren van Nederlandse cultuur in New York, wilden we ook wat Amerikaanse artiesten aan de line-up toevoegen. Uiteindelijk hadden we een internationaal artiesten pakket van hoog niveau, iets wat ons in Nederland vanwege reiskosten klauwen met geld zou hebben gekost.

Het feest voelde als ons eigen, uit de klauwen gelopen verjaardagsfeestje, maar dan met uitmuntende artiesten. Het werd ons al snel duidelijk dat we onze promotie een tikje hadden overschat. Alle speciaal voor het feest ontworpen posters, flyers, de zelfgemaakte tasjes, eigen website en huisstijl en wat niet. Op deze snikhete dinsdagavond in Brooklyn zagen we namelijk bar weinig nieuwsgierige, vreemde gezichten. Maar ook werd duidelijk dat we onze scene hadden onderschat. De hele ruimte was gevuld met vrienden en vrienden-van-vrienden, die spontaan hun kleren uittrokken, op het podium dansten en elkaar gebroederlijk in de armen vielen bij Frans’ geweldige, afsluitende set. Volgend jaar weer?

Chiptunes, nieuw fenomeen op de dansvloer

Bedenk het geluid van oude spelcomputers, de Atari's en Nintendo's van weleer, en voeg daar dan een paar degelijke beats aan toe. Voilá, daar heb je de beginselen van chiptunes, een nieuwe sound die langzaam een steeds groter, internationaler publiek scoort. In Nederland groot gemaakt door de Utrechtse organisatie Eindbaas, eind deze maand met een speciale gast aanwezig op Festival deBeschaving, zocht Dance.nl deze bazen op.

Want ergens kenden we die muziek toch al? Bekende popsongs in een 8bit, Mario Bros-achtige cover, een leuke gimmick, maar ook werkelijk een serieuze muziekstroming? “Chiptunes is veel groter dan je denkt”, zegt Klazien Schaap, dj/organisator bij Eindbaas. “Sinds het ontstaan van spelcomputers worden ze al gebruikt om muziek mee te maken, dat is niet nieuw. Dat de muziek in clubs opduikt gebeurt pas de laatste twaalf jaar; dat begon met obscure acts, maar is nu een grote, internationaal hechte scene geworden.” Blip Festival Zo is Schaap net terug uit New York, waar ze met Eindbaas een feest deed vlak na het Blip Festival, een evenement dat volledig draait om chiptunes. “Een groot succes”, aldus de Utrechtse, die er ontdekte dat chiptunes nu werkelijk volwassen is geworden. “Het is meer dan nostalgische gevoelens om die oude geluiden. Ik zag daar zoveel nieuwe acts die heel creatief omgaan met de sound; live gitaren, drums en zelfs vocalen eraan toevoegen. Het heeft een bepaalde frisheid die ook een jong publiek aanspreekt, dat zie ik ook op onze eigen feesten, waar tieners meestal het hardst losgaan.” Een ander duidelijk signaal is het gebruik van chiptunes door bekende, mainstream artiesten. “Beck heeft al eens een album volledig in chiptunes heruitgebracht. En Bas Bron, producer van ondermeer De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig gebruikt het ook veel. Ik verdenk hem er zelfs van met hardware te experimenteren, maar dat weet ik niet zeker. Je hoort in ieder geval vaak die bliepjes bij De Jeugd.” Theater-aspect Zo kun je volgens Schaap ook niet spreken van chiptunes als muziekstroming, het is eerder een geluid dat overal opduikt. “Bands als Slagsmålsklubben gebruiken het, maar ook veel dance-acts. Met Eindbaas zijn dat de acts die we eruit pikken, omdat we wel een dansfeest willen neerzetten. Groot verschil met een reguliere dansavond is echter dat hier veel meer gebeurt op het podium. Geen dj verstopt achter een laptop, maar gekke acts die met Gameboys, Atari's, drumcomputers of andere spullen in de weer zijn. Ja, het theater-aspect is groot, dat maakt chiptunes-feesten ook zo boeiend.” Naast de dj-set die Schaap met Eindbaas mede-oprichter Frans Twisk gaat doen op Festival deBeschaving, presenteert het duo daar ook een live-optreden van de Zweedse chiptunes-pionier Random. “Zeker één van de grootste namen uit het genre”, vertelt ze. “Ook hij sleept hardware op het podium, geeft gewoon een dikke show weg met een paar Gameboys. Dat zie je vaak tegenwoordig, maar hij heeft echt een trend gezet.”

EINDBAAS in New York – Know Your Scene

De Nederlandse chiptunes scene is een vreemd iets. En tegelijkertijd vergelijkbaar met iedere andere jonge, opkomende scene. Hoe ontstaan en ontwikkelen muziek scenes zich? Wat is dat, een ‘scene’? Voer voor sociologen!

Allereerst een heel korte, voor de oplettende Eclectro lezer wellicht overbodige, uitleg van chiptunes: oude spelcomputers, 8-bit geluids-chips, artiest, party. In Nederland worden sinds ongeveer 12 jaar chiptunes feesten georganiseerd, grotendeels in de underground. Drie jaar geleden besloten ik en Frans [Twisk, andere helft van EINDBAAS - red.] precies dat te doen: toffe feesten organiseren rond de muziek die wij het allerleukst vinden en EINDBAAS was geboren. We begonnen ondergronds, in punk hol ACU in Utrecht, maar inmiddels gaat het wel erg lekker, want telkens verkopen we het meer ‘mainstream’ poppodium EKKO in Utrecht uit. Sinds we de mogelijkheden van een open stage hebben ontdekt, waar we nieuw talent de mogelijkheid geven voor een groot en behoorlijk uitzinnig publiek te spelen, lijkt de Nederlandse chiptunes scene te exploderen. Er is veel aanwas van beginnende maar gretige artiesten, van wie de eerste wonderkinderen inmiddels internationale shows doen en met eigen boekers werken.

Ook voor EINDBAAS zelf leek het ons leuk om eens een feest over de grens te geven. En aangezien we al van plan waren om het chiptunes walhalla genaamd Blip Festival te New York te bezoeken, waarom dan niet in één beweging door wat Nederlandse chip-cultuur promoten via een kek EINDBAAS feest?

Omvangrijk artiestenbestand Nergens wordt de dynamiek tussen scenes onderling zo duidelijk als hier in New York. Blip 2012 is met dertig artiesten verspreid over drie dagen het grootste festival ter wereld op het gebied van chiptunes. Het festival heeft alweer zes volledige edities achter zich, plus enkele satelliet-edities in Japan, Australië en Scandinavië. De chipscene in New York en omliggende staten is verbazingwekkend groot en het verklaart het grote succes van Blip en de vele verwante chiptunes feesten zoals Pulsewave, I/O, 8static en Control-Flow. Maar waarschijnlijk is het een kip-en-ei verhaal: de feesten inspireren nieuwe artiesten om de Gameboy op te pakken, waardoor de feesten voorzien blijven van nieuw bloed.

Als ik mijn verwondering uit over New York’s omvangrijke artiestenbestand, trekt mijn gastheer Natty zijn neus op: ‘Op al die feesten zie je altijd dezelfde 50 artiesten rondlopen. Meer zijn er echt niet…’ 50?! In heel Nederland zijn er slechts rond de 10 artiesten die er echt toe doen! Daarom is EINDBAAS ook genoodzaakt tot internationale line-ups, willen we het niveau hoog houden.

Een opvallend nadeel van de meer ontwikkelde, oudere scene in New York ten opzichte van de kleine, jonge Nederlandse, is de roddel en achterklap. Op het eerste gezicht hanteren de muzikanten onderling een typisch Amerikaans beleefd enthousiasme (‘amazing stuff!’), maar als je doorvraagt, boren ze elkaar met hetzelfde enthousiasme de grond in. Een gevoelig punt in deze gemeenschap is aanwezigheid bij shows. Goede artiesten die zelden naar de shows van hun collega’s komen kijken, staan al snel te boek als ‘total assholes’. Wat trouwens helemaal niks zegt over de waarschijnlijkheid waarmee ze in de line-up van Blip belanden, een ander zéér gevoelig punt. Er is veel onderlinge competitie en afgunst, maar dat komt de algehele kwaliteit van de muziek alleen maar ten goede. In Nederland moet ik de eerste chip schandalen nog meemaken, maar over het algemeen is iedereen hier warm en ondersteunend naar elkaar toe. Net zoals bij EINDBAAS, maar dan vijf keer zo groot.

Uh, thanks! Heel verrassend om mee te maken, is het beeld wat de Amerikanen bij EINDBAAS hebben. Van sommigen horen we dat EINDBAAS tot de belangrijkste chiptunes feesten ter wereld behoort. Hoe weten ze dit, als ze er nog nooit geweest zijn? Van horen zeggen? Van onze live streams? Raadsels, raadsels, maar uh, thanks! Halverwege Blip wordt ik door een radio host gevraagd voor een interview om de Europese chipscene te representeren. Ik stem in, al vrees ik dat de organisatie van Blip veel meer weet over de Europese chipscene dan ik.

Voor de EINDBAAS crew is Blip over het algemeen een heerlijk headhunting festijn en we hebben genoeg ongelooflijk getalenteerde artiesten gespot om de komende jaren EINDBAAS niet droog te hoeven staan. Regelmatig worden we ook zelf benaderd door artiesten die ons vragen of ze een keer op EINDBAAS kunnen spelen. Aangezien ons open podium altijd open staat voor iedereen, is mijn antwoord op deze vraag steevast: ‘tuurlijk, Tof! Kom langs!’ De artiest in kwestie reageert dan altijd enthousiast, maar druipt af zonder contact gegevens te hebben uitgewisseld. Zei ik iets verkeerds?

Incrowd affaire Onderwijl delen Frans en ik driftig flyers uit om ons eigen feest te promoten, dat twee dagen na het festival plaatsvindt. Naast leuke reacties vangen we vaak bot. Veel mensen zijn dan al weer onderweg naar huis, of simpelweg te jong. Ons podium ‘The Thrash Bar’ hanteert een leeftijdsminimum van 21 jaar, zoals vaker bij Amerikaanse bars het geval is. Als ons thuispodium de Ekko zo’n streek zou leveren, zouden we twee derde van onze bezoekers kwijt zijn! Het lijkt erop dat het chiptunes publiek in New York iets ouder is dan het publiek bij EINDBAAS, maar er zitten een aantal pittige jonkies tussen die ieder feest máken. Piepjonge meisjes, met namen als Tickey, Emily en Aleicia, vormen het hardcore Blip publiek en zijn vaker surfend op, dan in de crowd te vinden. Die moeten we nu dus missen helaas.

EINDBAAS zelf vindt plaats in een bar-met-podium dat verdacht veel weg heeft van café de Flitz in Utrecht. Het ruikt er zelfs hetzelfde (verschaald bier), alleen is het wat groter. Voor iedereen die de Flitz niet kent: dat is zo’n bar waar de alternatieve jeugd ieder weekend rondhangt. Elke stad heeft er een, je kent het wel. Het geluid is verrassend goed. Beter nog dan in het grote theatergebouw waar Blip werd gehouden. De opkomst had beter gekund, maar voor een dinsdagavond in Brooklyn zeker niet slecht. In het publiek zien we alleen maar vrienden, chip artiesten en zelfs een paar verdwaalde Nederlanders, maar geen nieuwsgierige nieuwkomers. EINDBAAS is hier duidelijk een incrowd affaire, waardoor het een beetje voelde als je eigen verjaardagsfeestje. In Nederland red je het niet met alleen incrowd. Daarom probeert EINDBAAS vooral nieuwe mensen te benaderen en enthousiast te maken voor deze opwindende nieuwe ‘retro’ muziek.

World domination Maar het deed ook denken aan onze allereerste EINDBAAS, drie jaar geleden: kleinschalig, ondergronds en spontaan. De Nederlanders Neurobit, RoccoW en Men of Mega zijn in topvorm. Maar de andere artiesten: An0va, Minusbaby, Deadbeatblast en Freaky DNA zijn van internationale allure en zetten stuk voor stuk zulke sterke shows neer, dat het ergens onbegrijpelijk is om ze te zien in de setting van zo’n afgeragd barretje. Een unieke ervaring. Ter plekke wordt kunst gemaakt door de Californische chip-punker Koolskull, die ons spontaan volledig wegblaast met een potje geweldige chip hardcore. Ik koop een paneeltje van hem voor 10 dollar en duik nog snel even met Deadbeatblast een fotohokje in om de herinneringen tastbaar te maken. Alleen maar lachende gezichten en dansende vrienden. EINDBAAS als vanouds!

Aan het einde van de rit: wereldwijd is er geen hechtere scene te vinden dan chiptunes. EINDBAAS heeft internationaal stevig haar naam gevestigd en voorlopig kunnen we nog jaren voort met alle geweldige nieuwe input die we hier hebben ontvangen. We tellen mee, world domination, hoera! En nu snel Nederland veroveren.

Panic in de disco, Blip is over! Now what?! Remembering all the Blip after parties last year, the best is yet to come! Tonight, we have the official Blip after party, called Mint Jams, and tomorrow the unofficial one, called EINDBAAS. So it’s just a matter of saving the best for last, right?

While the weather is still gorgeous, I cycle my way through Brooklyn, to descent with Frans and Rocco on a terrace near the venue, drinking the time away with overpriced cocktails, until the next party. So this Mint Jams party is made up of a ridiculous all-star line-up including some Best of Blip artists: Knife City, Sabrepulse, Doomcloud; Smiletron and cTrix closing. Oh, and our own Men of Mega and RoccoW. The venue is 285Kent, the same venue as one of the after parties last year. For all you Dutch readers: this venue is a slightly bigger version of our first EINDBAAS venue the ACU in Utrecht, minus the lasers. First of all: this place is a sauna, there’s no oxygen here to keep everybody alive, and there’s no lights nor mirrors in the restroom. By entering this place, you run the fatal risk of: dehydration, choking or death by toilet, Trainspotting style. Good luck! But the total lack of security and cheap shitty beer is a tremendous relief compared to the Grammercy Theatre yesterday. 

Rocco and Men of Mega did a fine job opening for the big boys. But once the always exciting Knife City pulls out his weapons, the crowd gets really swept away. Even the venue’s electricity couldn’t handle the raw power that is Knife City, a.k.a Anamanaguchi’s drummer, a.k.a Luke, cause it spontaneously fell out, leaving us in silent darkness, twice! Although the show made me a very happy camper, Luke seem to die from nerves in the meantime, being a central figure in the whole organisation. No need to. The whole night was awesome!

Sabrepulse is as brilliant as always, playing some golden oldies, some acid and vocoder voice, but what to think of Doomcloud? I take back my Doomcloud joke about the venue’s smoking policy (allowed), take a deep breath, dive into the mosh pit and risk a heavenly death. I am such a fortunate person to be able to write this all down for you and to have witnessed a Doomcloud show, without having to choose between them. Yes, this is the same guy as suave party monster Radlib, who I wrote about before. Tonight he’s the gangster man in black of chiptune, playing dark party tunes to die for. Heavy stuff! I’m pretty sure now, that Carl’s the Lady GaGa of chiptune. I want him over to Utrecht to fill in all of the headliners on one EINDBAAS night as Radlib, Doomcloud and one of his many other brilliant personae. And a phone booth onstage, so he can change into fabulous designer outfits in between every other song. But those are just silly fantasies, right, Frans? Right?!

And then, my number 1 chiptune hero of the whole wide world forever and ever: cTrix. Also the worst kept secret headliner ever. I couldn’t think of a better closing act then this guy (sorry Trash80). No gAtari this time, but who cares, it’s magic whatever he does. This time he does it in a Nasa space suit. There’s no option but to throw yourself into the heat, jump on stage, get naked and dance! The melodies are so addictive and yes, he does all his greatest hits. Wait, did I say: get naked? That’s right: more cTrix, less clothes. And pictures to prove it.

What a night! No after-after parties this time. I still got a long way to go, cause I’m staying over at Nattie’s place in New Jersey tonight. Which is a little after party on its own (did that come out wrong?). Lots of catching up to do.

While writing this, I have a serious case of the Blip flu going on. When someone told me about it, I thought he was joking, but I have it pretty bad. So what happened on Blip day 3? I remember having picnic with Adam, Dustin, Pat, Rocco, Emi and Iasmin, with huge buckets of margarita. Then entering a noodle restaurant, where they played that The Church song. We kept silent for this sacred moment... 

I’m sure it wasn’t easy for the Blip crew to top day 2, but the last day might have been the best one. So many great artists are playing today, beginning with Deadbeatblast. Jake’s an artist that holds great promise to us, as we’ve booked him to do no less than two EINDBAAS gigs this year, one here in New York and one in Utrecht in September. He made his promise and did a really explosive set, doing his own crazy visuals. And as the female half of the EINDBAAS crew, I have to credit this guy for taking his shirt off. What a treat! Lesson learned from uncle Jake: guys, you don’t necessarily have to go all Meneo, but if you know you can get away with it, get naked! 

When it comes to amazing discoveries in chip music, Blip never lets you down. Danimal Cannon. Why have I never heard of this chip genius before? His Gameboy music is irresistibly hooky and melodious, but that’s only half of his thing. The real magic is in the completely seamless combination of guitar and chiptunes, that’s impossible to follow even for musically trained ears. His speedy rock songs are damn tight and of such a mathematical precision, that it is not hard to imagine this guy on the main stage of a big metal festival. He also has the ultimate recipe for great stage presence: just enjoy the shit out of yourself, while mastering your music in every detail. Very impressive. 

Monodeer does a really fine job representing the Netherlands (Hup Holland Hup!), especially according to the Kotaku blog: “Additional highlights include the Blip debut of Monodeer, from the Netherlands, who could easily be considered the next big thing; every vet of the chip scene was beyond impressed, and every lady in house was in love.” But I’ve lost it during the epic post-rock soundscapes of Infinity Shred. My conscience that is. I passed out during several shows, including Dr. Von Pnok’s, who I was looking forward to very much. I woke up again during MisfitChris who can only be described as aaaaawwwesssooooommmme, because I was too much of a zombie to remember the intellectual details. A perfect ending to a truly amazing Blip festival. Sigh... Is it over already? 

I finally managed to get one of my fellow Dutchies to do after drinks. Frans, I knew you wouldn’t let me down. Except: every bar is closed on this memorial day, a national day of celebration. When we finally encounter an open bar in The-City-That-Should-Never-Sleep, Adam introduces me to Christophe, recommending him as one of the best chipmusicians he’s ever seen. In fact I’m listening to his project ‘Note’ right now. Love his melodies and can’t wait to see this live one day. I guess the amazing discoveries in chipmusic just go on and on after the Blip stage has closed. New York has such a big and vibrant chip scene and it inspires me so much to expand the Dutch scene way more. All you Dutchies, pick up that Gameboy! The EINDBAAS stages are always open for you.

It’s so hot out there. And since going to the beach is not really an option in this city, we went for hanging out at a BBQ all day at the house of Don Miller’s girlfriend Sarah. Excellent choice, because once we were there, all the people of Blip were crammed into a tiny garden leaving the people no option, but to mingle and chat. The BBQ was delicious thanks to Adam and his friend Todd. A sudden rain burst actually only added to the fun. Good times.

Back to Blip. Yesterday was just a warm-up compared to this day. Today was Blip at its finest! What a trip. Let me tell you about my personal high lights. We all agreed that Kris Keyser put on a solid show. For me, Kris is the best example of what chiptunes is all about. Smart melodies that stick in your head, high energy and great to dance to, and all that with just that small toy we love so much. Kris is a joy to watch, because he’s really having fun up there, enjoying his own music and the crowd. Raw EINDBAAS material, I say. 

And then the inevitable Bit Shifter. The guy who basically all started it and inspired so many of us with his pioneering and inimitable stuff he does with Gameboys. As one of the few, he still stuck to the raw stage set-up, using nothing but his Gameboy. A performance by the Ronnie James Dio of chiptune (as Knife City Luke puts it) never ceases to amaze. I’ve seen him play a couple of times before, but I must admit that this was the absolute best one so far. The best part of it: this guy can sing! His tracks were accompanied by a well trained, sincere pop-voice. Personal favourite: the Church cover of Under the Milky way Tonight. 

Holy Lord!!! Omodaka really takes chiptunes to the next level and makes you instantly forget all about raw Gameboy stage set-ups and everything you thought you’d know about chiptunes. Omodaka is so much more than a masked Japanese dude with DS Lite, PSP, Game Boy and a kimono. Omodaka is a multi-media theatre production of collaborating artists, including several LCD screens with an eerily singing geisha, (who’m I can’t help but imagining she must be Omodaka’s aunt), gorgeously animated videoclips with every song, pulling you straight into a dreamworld of colliding planets and skeletons and flowers. Everything is so creepy and strange (not really scary, but creepy in a Tim Burton kind of way), it could only be Japanese. Swept off my feet. Best show of Blip 2012!

Day 2 of Blip found the perfect closing act in Radlib. This is one of the many personae of the incredibly productive Carl Peczynski. Radlib is the funky 90’s style disco party monster you’d wish he’d play every weekend in your favourite club. Party on Wayne! Oh wait, did I just see a crowd-surfing horse?!

Day 3. Did a lot of walking today, since the sun came out. Hung out with the Dutch crew and Kodek. We walked over the Brooklyn Bridge, we walked over the High Line, yada yada yada, BLIP TIME!!! Our venue, The Grammercy theatre in Manhattan is really pretty and everything what you’d expect of a good New York City theatre: a big sign on the street side, saying ‘BLIP FESTIVAL 2012’,  lots of red carpets, and most important of all: lots of chairs for lots of post-jetlag power naps. The downsides: security. The venue was just terrified of the savage Blip crowd. Getting your bags and your body (!) thoroughly searched before entering felt very intimidating and demeaning. Also: security fences in front of the stage, a very high security guard-to-visitor ratio, and blind panic with the guards when confronted with crowd surfing, bags on the floor, or people just standing somewhere for no good reason. 

Of all the great artist I saw, these were the most memorable. Nullsleep did a really impressive wall-of-sound kind of set that reminded me a lot of the Sulumi / Covox stuff. He’s been setting a very high standard for Blip for years now, since he’s playing Blip every year. Which is one of the big privileges as one of the Blip founders, of course. 

Kodek was definitely my favorite of Blip day 1. We had him play EINDBAAS 8, where he put up a very solid and aggressive chip show, wearing one of his famous hand made spike suits. Kodek at Blip was a whole different deal, though. Today, he went for the colorful electropical hipster look. It doesn’t really matter what he wears or what he’s not wearing. The Latvian guy is a giant, so everything on him looks like a statement, just leave it to Kodek. His set was much more minimal and skweee. The songs had lots of breathing room, and the lovable giant just bounced away, having a good time, knocking himself out with his huge gameboy necklace all the time. Fun stuff. 

Then the show I’ve been waiting for. For years! George and Jonathan, my heroes! Everything they do sounds like George Michael playing Sonic, DJAAA! They entered the stage being all Terence and Philip. The songs sounded exactly the same as on iTunes, so they tried hard to compensate this with a lot of showmanship and spectacle on stage, to bring back the ‘live’ experience. They succeeded partly. - 1 for the ballet dancer on stage trying really hard to catch the attention of the audience, of whom I heard this on several occasions: “yeah, but apparently she’s like, the daughter of someone famous”. +1 though, for their rainbow flashing LED headbands and another + 1 for the Deus ex Machina in the form of Peter Berkman (from Anamanaguchi), who suddenly popped up from under G&J’s table where he was hiding during half of their show, to treat us to some delicious guitar licks. All in all, these guys know how to put on a show. Of all the festival, George, Jonathan and Peter managed to put the biggest smile on my face. But they do that off stage as well. Love these guys.

Day 2. I can totally borrow Adam's bicycle! I use it right away to get over to the MOMA PS1 museum, withstanding heavy showers and thunderstorms. But it was disappointing, being in between exhibitions and the remaining art was just not so good. I get to Williamsburg with all its quirky, hipster, over prized, handmade, second hand, vintage, useless but lovely junk on display in all the shops and galleries. I get into a sketchbook library, which is an amazing idea, because browsing through other peoples sketchbooks is one of the finer things in life. So I get a library card, ask the librarian what I would like to see and I enter a wonderful illustrated world full of submarines, musical instruments, robots, futuristic landscapes, factories and machines. I could spend all day among these thousands of sketchbooks from all over the world.

New York City day 1. Frans, Rocco and me get picked up from the airport by our friend Adam. He played at EINDBAAS two times in the past as ‘Adam Gets Awesome’. He has kind of quit making chipmusic. He deleted all of his songs from his Gameboys. He’s still awesome, though. Rocco and Frans go to their apartment, I stay with Adam at his place, to begin with one of those good long-time-no-see conversations. Ah, it’s so good to be back!

There’s a sort of big chip-reunion at the Barcade, which is the best bar in New York, and probably the in world too. The 4 meter high walls of the entrance are fully decorated with an awesome beer cap mosaic, whereas the walls inside this big place are fully decorated with dozens of vintage working arcades. Be advised to take plenty of quarters when you go there. Out of the very nice selection of local brews they have on tap, the most peculiar things I tasted was dark stout that tasted like coffee.
