Well, I usually say the Hungarian equivalent of ‘bun bun bun lil bun look at your tiny spoon-shaped ears awww bun brave little lawnmower bun’, but sometimes I say ‘hey rabbits, my sister’s gonna go to med school’ because I think everyone should know.

I live in Japan, and I always revert to English to talk to small animals, and I was cooing at this tiny little fluff machine of a puppy in baby english like “hello you’re so cute such a cute hello hello yess you’re good” and the 70 year old Japanese lady that was walking him started to *translate the baby talk english into Japanese* for her pup. She wanted to be sure he understood it too.

I was at a pet store with Eileen. A woman walked up to us and asked if she could pet her. Eileen’s collar has ‘Deaf Dog’ embroidered on it. The lady asked about it, I confirmed, yes, she’s deaf. The lady immediately switched to American Sign Language and asked her how was her day, was she being a good girl, she’s so pretty. Eileen is wagging her tail excitedly, knowing that someone is talking to her.

I'm so very sorry. My sister, Stella (a sugar glider), just went to the Rainbow Bridge on Tuesday. I hope they are very comfy and happy why they wait for us. I wish you were here, so I could put my head on your knee. Murphy was well loved and amongst the goodest dogs.

hi! my name is cassie, i’m deaf, and my full-time job primarily involves working in disability access. i’m here with an important message about image and audio descriptions:

when you’re describing things for disabled people, you should not include your personal opinion on the thing you’re describing. even if it’s positive! you shouldn’t describe things as “a beautiful painting”, “a gorgeous photo”, “a wonderful song”, etc. i mean, if you’re sighted, think about how annoying it would be if every. single. picture you saw online was captioned with “this is beautiful and you like this” or “this is ugly and you hate it”, with the expectation that you have to agree with whatever the caption says and your own opinion doesn’t matter. it would be super annoying, right!

not to mention, i’ve seen people do this on pictures of real people, which can get weird—especially if they’re in a marginalized group you’re not in, in which case it can start to feel very fetishizing.

so, to recap:

good descriptions: “a realistically-rendered oil painting of a tree”, “a selfie of a person with short blue hair”, “a pencil sketch of taako”

bad descriptions: “a gorgeously realistic oil painting of a tree”, “a selfie of an adorable person with short blue hair”, “a fantastic pencil sketch of taako”

(i encourage reblogs on this, because this is a huge issue that i’d love to see people gain awareness of)

if you can read this rn learn american sign language

as a place to start i strongly recommend Dr. Bill Vicars’ free lessons on youtube and at lifeprint.com (which also has a huge ASL dictionary and lesson plans/outlines). there are also freelance ASL tutors online who can help personalize your learning experience and give you opportunities to observe and practice signing naturally, if you don’t already have Deaf friends/family

Gallaudet University, a university designed for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students, offers a few online lessons for ASL! https://www.gallaudet.edu/asl-connect/asl-for-free

I also have used this website to practice fingerspelling, https://asl.ms/. You can select the speed, and though it’s designed to help your receptive skills in knowing what the spelling was, you can practice your own fingerspelling by signing along with it.

The ASL App is also pretty good, though you do have to pay for most of the lessons, beyond the basics.

I am Deaf and used to TA the ASL program at the University of Missouri and I currently teach workshops about LGBTQ ASL and intersectionality and I wholeheartedly recommend lifeprint.com as a place to start!

But!

1. You can’t learn a language, and certainly not a visual language, alone. If you want to learn conversational ASL, you will need to seek out opportunities to connect with the Deaf community in your area. Dialects and accents vary greatly, and signs you learn online may not actually apply to your IRL conversations.

2. Don’t. Learn. From. YouTube. It is full of hearing people with one or two ASL classes under their belts “teaching” flat out incorrect signs. Related! If you are not a fluent ASL user (and you know if you are or aren’t) don’t. Post. “Instructional”. Videos. It is a huge pet peeve of mine and I find it disrespectful to the Deaf community.

That being saaaaaid, covid has cancelled most of my gigs for the rest of the year and I have been doing private ASL tutoring to earn some extra money. If you’re interested in learning (and putting money into the Deaf community!) send me a PM and we can talk lessons!
