New Moon AU where a heartbroken Esme returns to Bella, because she cannot bear to see her son in pain. And as she's bringing Bella back to Edward, they get ambushed by Laurent, then the werewolves, and finally Victoria.
I imagine Esme would return right before Bella finds out about the werewolves. Laurent shows up at the Cullen house while Bella and Esme are packing up to leave and developing a cover story. The werewolves are still the reason she and Esme manage to escape Laurent, but they don't know that. He just. Stops. Following them. And they're like ? But continue.
And thinking she's being kidnapped, Jacob is hell bent on getting Bella back. Bella and Esme are able to avoid their pursuer for a while, but at one point, he succeeds and snatches Bella back. *Cue Bella's discovery of the existence of werewolves*. Again, Jacob is her bridge to normalcy. He wants her to give up on her ridiculous quest, revealing that he killed Laurent and Victoria is after her. Jacob and the wolves can keep her safe and then life will go back to normal.
As we all know, Bella chooses Edward. She breaks away from the wolves, using her Classic Bella Evasion and returns to Esme.
Meanwhile, Esme breaks down and calls Alice. "I've lost her! I've lost her!" Alice can't see her, but tries to reassure Esme. Rosalie overhears and calls Edward, demanding he come back. Esme's gone and in danger, Bella died. "Stop being such a baby and help us."
This ultimately destroys Edward. He's more useless than before. He's essentially gone catatonic. Victoria catches wind of this and changes tactics: she'll kill Edward and make the whole coven suffer for taking her James. So now it's a race to get to Edward before Victoria. (Oh my God, there could even be a scene where she's hurting him and he just won't fight back because he thinks he deserves it 🥺🥺) And he hears Esme and Bella and wakes up. Victoria flees before she can become outnumbered.
Bella and Edward reunion 🤍✨. Love, love, love. ✨🤍 True love.
Esme's a hero. She and Bella bonded plenty. Carlisle's furious that she put herself at risk, but can't help but be proud. Edward is equally incredulous.

One of the largest disparities in the Twilight fandom is that a lot of people genuinely don't understand that when Edward left Bella in NM, he was choosing between "Bella sad is for a few years" and "Bella dies by my hand". He was trying to save her life! And yeah, he absolutely broke up with her in a shitty way, but he thought ending it that way would help her get over him faster to reduce the sadness period.
So, yeah, he was a complete and total buffoon in new moon. But all that buffoonery came from a place of tragic, desperate love.

Ok so roads are important infrastructure. A lot of stuff that's important happens on roads. Now, let's imagine that quadrillionaire Matt Stench has decided that the next big tech innovation is the Wide Car. It's a car that takes up six lanes despite seating only one passenger.
The Wide Car is supposed to be the future, and everyone's going to be driving Wide Cars, even though nobody who makes Wide Cars is turning a profit. Employers are offering Wide Cars as an employee benefit, and getting "nah." Some employers are going as far as demanding their employees drive Wide Cars, and the result is that people take time out of their workdays to get in the mandatory gas usage for their Wide Car before driving home in a regular car.
In spite of the fact that the Wide Car is clearly set to fail, there's an enormous push to expand to twelve-lane roads to accommodate a bunch of Wide Cars that simply will not materialize. This is not an organic response to demand, but a speculative investment that amplifies the existing issues with road development for no good reason.
