I use AVS DVD Player or AVS Media Player to get the screencaptures, depending on the source being a DVD or a screen recording, it is cumbersome and at times slow, but I have developed a rythm to it and I haven't found a better alternative (for me) to get just the amount of screencaptures I want and not a bunch of unneccessary ones that I have riffle through (like when I tried VLC Media Player). And to edit the screencaptures I use a over 20 years old Paint Shop. I start with adjusting Levels, then Curves, then Hue/Saturation/Lightness but not by much because I try to keep the colours as close to original as possible, depending on what the picture looks like at this point I adjust or skip Color Balance or/and Contrast, then I resize and crop the picture and finally sharpen it. That's the basic route I take, but it all depends on the quality of the picture if I take extra steps to make it more clear or brighter and so forth.
