I’ve always thought this figure from the album cover symbolized the frustration of guitar players who struggled to keep pace with Edward Van Halen’s groundbreaking innovations between 1978 and 1984.
Imagine it’s early 1981 and you’re a teenage guitar player from, oh, Akron, who’s just mastered “Eruption.” You can burn through it note-for-note. You’re the best young player in school. By far. All the chicks and dudes who watch and hear you play are unanimously impressed.
On 29 April, you head over to Montgomery Ward (you kids, ask your parents about where they bought their records) and grab the brand new Van Halen LP from the rack. You gladly hand over your $5.99 to the cashier and head home. You eagerly slap the black vinyl on the turntable and drop the needle. As the first track fades in you hear the funky slapped-tapped intro to “Mean Street.” Your brow furrows and your eyes narrow as you stare at the album cover.
Wha-a-t the fuck? How the fuck is he doing that? How’s he making those sounds?
