Britt Julious remembers going to the nurseâs office in high school and joining the rows of girls lying on cots. They werenât there because they had a cold or the flu. Like Julious, they were there because of their periods.
âItâs hard to be 15 or 16 years old and youâre trying to pay attention in algebra, and all you can think about is how you want to puke,â Julious, a 31-year-old writer in Chicago, told TODAY.
âI would come home from school because I couldnât function. I couldnât sit up in my chair.â
Julious was only 10 years old when she got her period. Soon after, intense cramps began and continued throughout her adolescence into adulthood, when she learned she had uterine fibroids.
Painful periods are a symptom of fibroids, or noncancerous growths in the uterus. But for many women, pain alone isnât reason to see a doctor. In fact, numerous women told TODAY they were taught that pain is simply part of being a woman.
Now a new wave of doctors and organizations want to tell people thatâs not true.
BUT FIRST, WHAT ARE FIBROIDS?
Fibroids are benign tumors in a womanâs uterus. Theyâre most common during a womanâs childbearing years, but can develop at any age. Fibroids can be as small as a seedling or bigger than a grapefruit, and women can have one, two, three or many.
Fibroids are common but doctors do not know why some women develop them. Genetics play a factor: Women with a family history of fibroids are more likely to develop them. And black women are especially at risk. Up to 80% of black women will develop fibroids before they turn 50, and up to 70% of white women will develop fibroids before they turn 50, according to research. For black women, fibroids are often more severe and occur earlier, according to Dr. Elizabeth Stewart, a fibroids specialist and professor of obstetrics and gynecology and surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

This is so important. Fibroids eventually lead to me being infertile. I wish I had advocated for myself.

You order a package off Amazon. When the Amazon delivery guy shows up to your door, instead of giving you the package you bought, he beats the shit out of you. Then, when he sees that you are not dead yet, he calls all of the Amazon delivery people in the area and they all proceed to beat the shit out of you. Miraculously, you survive. Another miracle: a friend in your neighborhood caught the assault on video. After a month of recovery and extensive hospital bills that you have no idea what to do with, the video has gone viral. You read the comments below. âThis is what happens to people who fuck with Amazon!!!â Someone says. âIâve never been beaten up by Amazon employees, and Iâve been using them all my life!â Someone else comments. Later, you start to see articles popping up about your story. They all mention that when you were 17, your license was revoked for reckless driving. In a Facebook post on your momâs feed, someone is going on a rant about how not all Amazon delivery guys are bad, and that if you look really close, the âbadâ ones are just stressed out. Your name is trending on Twitter. Jeff Bezos films a response to your attack, denouncing the video of you getting beaten to within an inch of your life by his employees as becoming âa symbol of hate towards Amazon.â The people who attacked you still deliver packages around your neighborhood. You saw one of them just yesterday as you were watering your plants. You still canât pay your hospital bills. Your phone dings- Twitter again. âMaybe if you didnât order from Amazon,â someone pipes up, âthis wouldnât have happened!â
Holy shit
Someone did not get the analogy
We need HOAs or some idiots will paint their house purple or put tractor tires in their front yard. If you want tractor tires, donât move to a HOA neighborhood.
I couldnât even fathom how horrifying it must be to live somewhere there are...purple houses and and yucky stuff in peopleâs yards. Thank God I donât have any real problems like that.
listen my Nonna and Nonno live right by a purple house (itâs a nice lilac) and as a kid I was fucking obsessed with it because purple is my favorite color. Iâd go nuts whenever we passed by it. Also it had a purple mailbox to match and it blew my mind.
No more HOAs. More purple houses.
imagine trying to control what someone else can do with or on their own property just because you don't agree with their taste in decor
NO MORE HOAs MORE PURPLE HOUSES
Related, becuase I just had to move:Â âjust donât move into an HOAâ Do you know what a PAIN IN THE ASS it is to find NON-HOA Housing? Very nearly everything in the CO front range that isnât a rental has an HOA these days!
Short list of the Shit the HOA at my pervious house tried to pull:
Banning personal and community food gardens (The reason the tag for my garden is âThe garden of earthly HOA violationsâ)
Banning people from using thier personal yards as Native Plant Restoration microzones, something that looks gorgeous and is extremely helpful to the local ecology
trying to get the city council to remove protections on adjacent city Open Space/Native Plant restoration zone so they could mow it.
mandating the use of ONE landscaping company in the neighborhood, coinicdentally owned by the HOA presidentâs son
Mandating the use of an unecessary water purification company on all properties.
suing city animal control for collecting lose dogs and cats and returning them to the addresses on thier collars. You know. that thing animal control does so the animals donât get run over or disemboweled by the coyotes or catch and spread rabies. The thing thatâs illegal to let your pet do out here for those reasons Karen.
Suing the city council to remove a city bus stop in the neighborhood that was heavily used by many residents. They damn near got away with it becuase the HOA meetings were always in the middle of the day on a weekday. You know, when the residents that use that stop are working.
Sending people letters threatening to fine them for having âOut Of Seasonâ holiday decor. Specifically targeting my Indian neighbors who were celebrating Diwali, not Christmas and the Jews with visible Menorahs.
Fining people for doing thier own appliance and car repair on thier own personal property
Fining people for operating a business out of thier house, specifically targeting a disabled neighbor that does comission tailoring and garment repair out of her home. never bothered a soul except the one snoopy bitch who didnât like that her clients were allowed to park in the tailorâs designated and otherwise unused parking space.
Trying to fine a neighbor for flying a Pride Flag
HOAs are invasive, bigoted, corrupt and cruel institutions that should never have been allowed to be created. If you live in and HOA area, showing up at the meetings to tell people what the fuck is wrong with them, Joining your HOA board to protect your neighbors and possibly organize the dissolution of the HOA is one of the best things you can do to protect the marginalized members of your community.
FUCK HOAs AND LONG LIVE THE PURPLE HOUSES AND TRACTOR-TIRE GARDENS OF THE WORLD.
Are y'all telling me this shit is actually LEGAL?
Hereâs how to get an HOA to leave you and your purple house tf alone
cant stop thinking about this post. đ

Tips That Can Save Your Kidâs Life.
THIS IS IMPORTANTÂ
When I was a child, from the time I was about four and could understand things, my mom told me and my brother that we should have a secret word. That way, if we were ever in trouble or felt unsafe and we didnât want the people around us to know we needed her to come get us, we could let her know. So she let us pick the word and my brother and I chose the phrase âpeanut butter cups.â (Iâm happy to share the phrase now since both my brother and I are adults now).Â
I used the phrase twice in my life. Once, I was at a friends house when I eight years old. Her dad got really drunk and was throwing things against the wall. I was really scared and I didnât want to draw attention to myself on the phone when I called my mom to come get me because I didnât know if he would get more violent if I asked her to come get me. So I called her and was calm and after a couple minutes I asked âHey mommy, did you get me those peanut butter cups from the store?â And she said âIâll be right there.â And she came and got me within minutes.Â
Second, I was a teenager spending the night at a friends house. Her brother and dad were drinking and they started talking about things that made me uncomfortable - ie: what they liked to do to women. My friend didnât seem perturbed and said that was normal for them and that I shouldnât worry. But I was worried because they were really drunk and I was 15 and the only âwomanâ around that wasnât related to them. I went in my friends room, told her I needed to call my mom and say goodnight. Before I hung up with her I asked âNext time we go to the store, can we get some peanut butters cups? Iâve been craving them.â And she came and got me, just like that.Â
Two incidents, one as a young child, one years later as a teen. Donât discredit this stuff, it fucking works. My brother used it a few times too. Let your child pick the word and no never, ever, ever, ever get mad at them for using it no matter what it is.Â
DO NOT SCROLL PAST THAT.
Off topic, but very important! I was taught to yell âthis is not my mom/dad.â A young kid freaking out in public is likely to be ignored out of embarrassment, but a kid telling you right out that they donât know who is messing with them? That will turn heads.
Reblog this.đŻđŁđ

I feel like this should be said too if you see a child yelling things like âthis isnât my mum, or I donât know youâ or something donât ignore them! This system relies on people actually helping the child! It dosent matter how rude youâll seem or how anxious you are you could be saving a childâs life!
Even if you just ask the child âDo you know this personâ if the adult buttâs in make sure to ASK THE CHILD! Even a shy kid will tell you they donât know this person or just met them or something!
DONâT IGNORE THE SIGNS!
