It's the little things that make it all worth while... For all the endless buy stacks of the same old Moody Blues and Burl Ives records you see, once in a blue moon a gem like this walks through the door... The Lewis Conection is one of the rarest and most sought after funk/soul records to come out of the twin cities music scene, featured on the magnificent Secret Stash compilation Twin Cities Funk and Soul, and even got the reissue treatment from Numero Group a few years back. The number of copies in circulation is debatable, what is not though is the quality of music. Funded by an auto insurance claim, brothers Pierre and Andre Lewis went on a recording tear in 77/78 and later released the compiled material in 1979. The famed purple one himself Prince even plays rhythm guitar on "got to be something here", adding even more mystique to an already compelling story.
Of course Eclipse holds the title for my personal favorite record store on the planet, but just like every collector I love finding new spots to haunt while traveling. Last week on a trip to California I had a little time and a few bucks set aside so I tried out some shops I haven’t been to before.
My first spot was Pasadena’s #Poo-BahRecords. This spot was really nice, you can tell they’ve been at it for awhile and know what the hell is up. Diversity is the name of the game here, I found all sorts of gems ranging from garage, psych, soul, funk, and jazz, all the major food groups. The prices were spot on and the dude manning the station was chill and friendly. On top of offering a great selection of new and used they also have releases from their own imprint and have podcasts on their website to boot!
Next up was #WombletonRecords in the Highland Park neighborhood in Northeast LA. This was my kind of shop, tiny, but jam packed with shit that you don’t really see anywhere else. They specialize in foreign and rare LP’s that they nab on overseas buying trips two or three times a year. The guy working was really nice and played me some songs off of the records I had put aside, which is invaluable here because the prices are high, but you get what you are paying for, rare and obscure stuff you can’t really find anywhere else (Funky Polish records anyone?). The important thing about this place is that they’re a niche specialty shop in an up and coming area, but have faced some adversity as of late after another (not to be named) store moved in on their turf. So go in there and support the little guy, they deserve it!

Last week marked the 29th anniversary of Jaco Pastorius’ passing. Before working at Eclipse I had no idea who Jaco was, I had heard of the Weather Report but it wasn’t really my thing. That changed after viewing the 2015 documentary “Jaco:The Film”. It is easily one of the best music docs of the last couple years, and appeals to audiences like myself, who have no prior knowledge of Jaco as well as long time fans. The film is both rewarding and painful, documenting both the highs and lows of the frantic force of nature that was Jaco, one of the most influential and prolific bass players of all time. You can catch this film streaming on several sites for minimal cost.

Eclipse Record of the Day : Deltron 3030 S/t 2000
An epic genre classic that stands along with Gravediggaz and Dr. Octagon as the greatest hip-hop concept records of all time. Dan the Automator, Kid Koala and Del tha Funkee Homosapien bring along the biggest names in music to create a distopian future filled with all the cultural sci-fi references you could possibly ingest without your brain exploding. Automator drops some of the greatest beats ever assembled, and paired with Koala in his prime the musical landscape alone would be suffice, Del just adds the cherry on top. Easily his finest lyrics before or after its release, a true master also in his absolute prime. Ignore the follow-up and immerse yourself in a true listening experience, Deltron 3030 is one of those classics that simply doesn’t age, do yourself a favor and grab a copy immediately.
Back in 1995, British author Nick Hornby made a modest splash with his best-selling novel High Fidelity about the music-obsessed owner of an independent record store. The Hollywood film, released in 2000 and based on the book, glamorized the quirky appeal of rock fandom and competing against the big chains. Two decades later, most of the big music retailers have folded, but many spunky indie record stores remain.

One can hardly imagine Prince, Erykah Badu, or Outkast without the influence of Betty Davis. Her style of raw and revelatory punk-funk defies any notions that women can’t be visionaries in the worlds of rock and pop.
Can’t wait to get this in, she has always been one of our favorites here at Eclipse!
Eclipse Spotlight : Cornelius - Fantasma (1997)
When I first heard Fantasma, my brain leaked out of my ears into my headphones, I didn’t know what to do. I loved Beck and had even heard Buffalo Daughter and Cibo Matto, but this was different. It stuck with me and to this day I still consider it one of my favorite records of all time. It’s beautiful and ugly, elegant and sloppy, cute and harsh, playful and aggressive all at the same time.
It’s Pet Sounds for turn of the millennium stoners, a Saturday morning cartoon trip through music history, audio collage from a brilliant and devout sound explorer not interested in doing ordinary work.
Now almost twenty years later Fantasma has finally been reissued, ready to be introduced to new brains that need purging. The four bonus tracks compliment the original work well, it’s great to hear new songs from the Fantasma era, but I can understand why they were left out of the original release, they seem somewhat derivative of other songs on the record.
If you’re looking for a front to back experience in sound, this is your ticket. It’s an undefinable, purely joyous exorcise in imagination and ingenuity.
