I've been analyzing Doey for a very long time, and I hope no one has mentioned this before 😅;
While many people say that Mathew mostly controls Doey, I think that's completely wrong. It makes it seem like Kevin is the problematic one when he controls Doey. In the game, we see that three boys almost completely control Doey: Jack when Doey is alone, Kevin defending against external dangers, and Mathew taking care of the safe haven – we realize they actually have responsibilities in protecting the orphans...
Kevin: In my opinion, he's quite advanced for his age! I'd say Doey is the most important person, but his biggest problem is that he doesn't portray this normally and has trust issues. I can argue that he's smarter than Mathew; from the beginning of the game, he trusted his instincts and thought that we and Poppy weren't entirely safe people, and he was ultimately right! Poppy probably changed a lot after waking up from the cage and Kevin noticed it
Mathew: Despite his age he might be a teenager, but his self-confidence and courage are still very weak. He needed Poppy very much because she was one of the rare toys who knew the factory's operations. When Poppy disappeared, Mathew was practically defenseless without her, but he did his best to protect the orphaned toys and still doesn't think he's a good enough leader
Jack: He might be the child I feel most sorry for :c Even though he doesn't play a crucial role, I noticed that he behaves exactly like the original Doey personality. Jack, by accurately reflecting Doey's personality, could be a source of joy for the toys in the safe haven because Doey was a very beloved toy mascot, as far as I remember (I apologize if this information is incorrect). We see that the toys in safe haven are completely suffering and hopeless; Jack is probably trying to cheer them up by having fun with them
I'm sorry for my poor English. Actually my analysis of Doey is very long, but I didn't know where to begin 🥹 I love doey aka my boys!
Ooh, this is a really good analysis! I'm really glad someone else noticed how Doey's personalities are more equal than some people think. Matthew is not the "main personality" or "host", it just happens that we spend a lot of time within the Safe Haven where he tends to show himself the most because he is needed there as a leader and cares for his family. But while we're outside of it, we can see more of Jack and Kevin. And it aligns perfectly with why Doey was created in the first place. In 1322 Report: Kevin, the scientist refers to Doey's intended purpose as "an experiment that can fulfill multiple assigned roles".
I agree a lot with what you said about Kevin. He's definitely smart and it's nice to see someone else notice his early suspicions of the player and connect that to what happens in the end. (Really, Ollie was the one who couldn't be trusted, but sadly Doey doesn't get to learn the truth about that...) Even though he lashes out at the player, that doesn't make Kevin bad at all. He was hurt and saw the player as the enemy. But before that, there were moments of Kevin being in control while helping us.
For Matthew, he is a teenager, yes. His report says he entered the Playcare orphanage at the age of 15. And I think his insecurities are important to his character, so I'm glad you recognize this. I think he is a good leader, and he tries his best to be good for them despite everything, but once things go wrong he ends up being very hard on himself...
With you believing that Jack's personality is similar to the mascot, I wonder if the fact that Jack himself was a fan of the Doey character played a part in this. Like, if maybe it's easy for him to "play the character" due to his familiarity and fondness for Doey. Idk, but there's good potential here for personal interpretations about it, so it's a nice observation.
