when he and yancy were young, there was always warm breakfast on the table before school - oatmeal or eggs or even just frozen waffles. on weekends there were big warm breakfasts: pancakes and bacon or french toast and sausage, real waffle-iron waffles and whipped cream and fresh fruit. he’d take seconds on everything, sometimes thirds - teenage boy metabolisms, yada yada.

breakfast at the jaeger academy was disappointing - always a little on the cold side and in need of a lot of salt or maple syrup to make it taste better. and then when they started on missions, breakfast turned into a wolfed-down protein bar and a swig of orange juice at two a.m. 

after yancy’s death, breakfast happens whenever raleigh drags himself out of bed or hauls himself off the couch. it’s almost never warm - it’s usually half a box of entenmann’s doughnuts or a couple of pop-tarts or cold leftover pizza. cereal, maybe, if he remembered to buy milk. if he’s feeling okay, up to leaving his apartment, he might go out and buy himself a breakfast sandwich for a change of pace, but that’s not most days.

after they close the breach, he starts having breakfast with mako. at first they just share a table in the mess hall and talk over dry bagels and limp fruit, but eventually they start meeting in her quarters instead - she always remembers milk for the cereal. they eat on her bed, side by side. she likes honey nut cheerios; he likes lucky charms, and she keeps a box of each side by side on top of her little refrigerator. raleigh’s first-ever breakfast in bed is a bowl of lucky charms, shoulder-to-shoulder with mako after a chaste sleepover.
