first and most important is getting the highest quality footage of the episode. these usually come from box disc (bd) or amazon (amzn) releases. the next best is 1080p and then 720p. another thing is trying to get raws or soft subbed downloads over hard subs to avoid cropping too much.

as for recording clips, i have a 2020 macbook pro and just use the built-in screen recording feature. or for some i use vic’s built-in recording function, but have found it to be hit or miss. screen recording with the macbook doesn’t decrease the quality of the footage noticeably, but it does kind of affect the frame rate. i kind of prefer using the macbook screen recording.

second is using sharpening. i mainly use photoshop (2021), so in photoshop the specific filter i use is smart sharpen.

i used to make gifs with my ipad and a website called ezgif, so for that i just used the sharpening tool in apple’s photo app.

third is size, colors & exporting, and noise reduction (forgive me if this is not written the best)

size: more pixels = higher quality. a 500px gif will capture more detail than a 300px gif. i usually make my gifs 500x333 (3:2 aspect ratio). but be aware that tumblr has a limit of 10mb per gif.

colors & exporting: when exporting a gif (in photoshop) you are only allowed a maximum of 256 colors. so if your gif has a lot of colors, it’s going to look more fuzzy/“dithered”. i find trying to even out colors, especially in the backgrounds, helps to make sure gifs don’t get too fuzzy.

noise reduction: another photoshop filter that helps “control colors” and even them out for exporting. i personally don’t do it often (there is noise reduction built into smart sharpening) but for some reason gekiranger was super noisy even though it was fairly high quality, so i did use it for that.

bonus! resampling via handbrake and similar tools:

i personally do not use this (it’s considered “advanced” but also i barely have space on my laptop lol), but figure i’d mention it because i have seen some gif makers use it.

to my knowledge, handbrake is a software that can be used to make footage clear and also change the frame rate to make the movement smooth. it’s not necessary to use, but will make gifs high quality and i think is really good for older/lower quality footage.
