He has to because he has to know as much as he can from the conversation without seeming like he’s falling apart so he goes “wait to like a woman?” With a laugh and Eddie goes “fuck you!” Cause that’s easier right? And what’s even easier than that is to put everything he has into two words back, ones they’ve used in replacement of three other words for years.

So John’s mic was acting weird, right? The whole case. It was recording but the sound wasn’t showing up. Now as someone who works with mics in film this is often because the sound is being transmitted to another device. That device is picking up the sound and being saved the the home device, in this case John’s mic.

John would receive all audio and be none the wiser to a second device unless it showed up on the screen specifically. Which, John being an amateur podcaster he might not necessarily be versed in that or didn’t see it.

Now, someone was able to stay steps ahead of the trio during the whole case. Initially it was explained away through a radio, fake police yada yada. End of case stuff.

But what it doesn’t explain away is Eccels (idk if I’m spelling that right) and how someone knew he’d talked to Sherlock, been in touch, and this led to his eventual death. I’m choosing not to believe the aneurism explanation because this is Sherlock and nothing is ever that convenient or coincidental.

So someone hijacked the mic.

Someone is transmitting the audio.
