"Hello? Y/N?" Itadori clears his throat when he notices you calling him as he's standing in line to get Yogurt with Nobara.
"What's up? Do you miss me?" he teases.
"When're you two coming back?" You asks. Itadori's caught off guard by your straight forwardness, but he doesn't dwell on it.
"Yeahh, haha. Sorry about that, we're just getting yogurt and then heading back." He says trying not to let his agonizing pain from carrying all of Nobara's shopping slip up on the phone with his crush.
"Okay. We're at Kitty's World."
"Sure, we'll be there. Do you want-" beep. beep. beep.
Itadori looks down at the blank screen of his phone, taking a second to process that you'd just hung up on him.
"What's with that look?" Nobara asks, noticing the guy's face scrunched in confusion .
"Y/N just hung up on me," He mumbles, shifting uncomfortably to put his phone back into his pocket.
Nobara raises an eyebrow "Oh God. What did you do?"
"Oh don't play dumb, why would she be mad at you?"
"I don't- wait, she's mad at me?" He tilts his head.
Nobara slaps her palm to her forehead, letting out a sigh of disbelief. "Do you know anything about girls?"
"Yeah! Well- somewhat, but-"
"God, itadori." She rolls her eyes.
"Jeez, stop whining and just help me!!"
"No can do, you're on your own with this."
"Woww. Some friend you are." Itadori pouts, stepping up to grab their cups of yogurt.
"Maybe she was just in a rush." Nobara takes her cup of yogurt from his hand.
"Maybe..." Itadori agrees, and yet, he still spent the entire walk to the cafe lost in his thought about you.
Did he really do something wrong? Maybe said something wrong? Or maybe you really were just in a rush. All he knows right now is that from the tone of your voice over the phone and your haste towards ending it can only mean that he definitely fucked up.
Is what he's thinking as he's laying on his bed staring at the ceiling. He'd never took himself as someone who'd get all his thoughts caught up in the smallest gestures a girl took. But here he was: replaying everything he did the entire day to try and wonder why you were absolutely ignoring him and all of his texts.
"Removed...blocked....delete..." you mumble to yourself, swiping to remove Itadori from every part of your life. Was it a bit excessive to fully cut him off without giving him a chance to explain? Maybe. But it’s not like he’s any innocent either. You spent so long becoming telling your “secrets” to someone you thought was a stranger, all for it to be a lie. All the time you guys spent together seeing the Human Earthworm series, exchanging notes, late calls, all of it felt like a huge circus act by him, and you were the joker.
Your pillow feels warm from the muffled groans you’ve let out going through all his social media accounts to block. Your cheeks are feel a bit sticky from the few tears shed, but you wipe them away as if it were no big deal. All you wanted to do now was go to bed and sleep everything off, but you couldn’t.
You scowl, opening your eyes again. Who could be out there at this hour? And God forbid it be Itadori because you don’t have enough will power in you right now to not bitch-slap him into his senses.
You drag your feet to the door to greet your visitor, fully expecting to see Itadori, but to your relief, it wasn’t.
“Megumi?” You say after clearing your throat.
“Yeah, it’s me.” He avoids looking at you directly. “You uhm, you forgot your purse in my car.” He says holding up your bag, finally moving his eyes to meet your puffy ones.
“Oh, thanks. I didn’t even notice,” You smile, taking the bag from him way too quickly, wishing this interaction already be over.
As much as this was a dream of yours, to have Megumi show up at your door reaching out to make conversation, it wasn’t quite exciting having him visit you in the middle of your meltdown. And unfortunately for you, it didn’t go unnoticed by him.
“Are you okay?” He stops his foot in the doorway so you can’t shut the door in his face.
“Yeah yeah, it’s nothing.” You say, looking at the ground, hiding behind the door as much as you can.
“It doesn’t seem like nothing,” He says, catching you speechless. “Can I come in?” His words always seem so collected, like he knows exactly what he’s doing. You can’t help but oblige.
You shut the door once he’s inside. Megumi Fushiguro in your home. You should be bouncing off the walls right now. The guy you’ve liked for God knows how long is finally just a few feet away from you, but the pit of betrayal in your stomach still lingers, and you can’t think of anything other than why it all happened to you.
“What’s wrong?” Megumi’s voice is softer than his usual cold tone.
“Just…I don’t know what’s real and what’s fake right now.” You sniffle, sitting on the couch.
“Like, you’re not sure where you are right now? Dissociation?” He follows after, sitting close to you.
“No no,” You take a deep breath ready to explain, but your voice cracks in between sentences regardless. “I thought I knew someone, but I guess I didn’t. It doesn’t seem like they meant to hurt me, but they did. I know I should talk to them, it’s just…How am I supposed to know what they tell me won’t also be a lie?”
“I see…Well, you don’t know if it’s going to be a lie. But if you really believe that they didn’t meant o hurt you, I mean, you just have to take the risk of opening up.” He scoots closer.
“I guess…but not right now. I just need to, like, wallow or something…” you mumble off.
“Yeah, totally understand.”
The silence that followed after was unbearably awkward. The clock’s ticking sounded like concert with how still you two were. You fiddled with your hands waiting for him to say something, but he just sat there with the same nonchalant expression he always had.
“I’m sorry, this is awkward. You don’t have to stay.”
“No, I…I want to stay. Sorry, I just- I’m just having trouble trying to say what I wanna say.”
Megumi’s eyebrows furrow in hesitance? Frustration? Whatever it was, it wasn’t like his usual persona.
“The purse wasn’t why I came. I just wanted to see you.”
“What?” Your sniffling stops and your ears perk up like a dog hearing a whistle.
“I didn’t picture doing this while you’re, well, crying. I’ve never been good at this stuff anyway so just bear with me.” Megumi scoots even closer to you.
Your heart is racing, breath held, eyes wide, but you don’t pull away.
“Y/n, I like you. I like being around you and I think you’re pretty and…I want to spend time with you.”
Your mouth stayed open, but you couldn't find any words to reply with. You'd liked Megumi for as long as you'd known. You'd wanted this for so long, for him to like you back and call you his, and be your everything. And when the moment finally came, it felt too good to be true.
"Do you...Are you serious?" You murmur. "You're sure you like me?"
"Yeah, really." He says firmly. And while your still drowning in your doubtful thoughts, you don't notice how close he's gotten.
His hand softly wipes away the tear stains on your cheek, while also pulling you closer. His breath is low and warm, you feel it against your lips getting hotter and hotter with how close he's getting. You know exactly what's coming, and it's not a dream this time. This isn't one of your pillows or TikTok scenarios, this is Megumi. The guy you thought you liked up until this moment.
"Stop." It came out more harsh than intended, especially with how you jerked back and away from his hand. "I-I'm sorry, I don't want to."
Megumi's hand stays in the cold air for a second, before dropping back onto his lap.
"No, it's my fault. I should have asked or something," He gulps after finishing his sentence. "I didn't mean to scare you, I'm sorry. I thought you liked me too."
"It's complicated," You sigh, avoiding eye contact with him. "I think you're great, and yeah, I did like you at some point. But I just- I don't know, I don't feel that way anymore."
Megumi nods, understanding exactly where you're coming from. "So you like Itadori?"
"What?! No, I didn't say that-"
"Y/n, I don't know who you're trying to fool, but it's obvious."
"Well, even if I did, who cares? That guy's a jerk and a liar, and I don't want to talk to him." You scowl.
"Oh, so our last conversation was about Itadori?"
"Whatever," you sniffle, holding back a scowl.
"Well, It's none of my business." Megumi sighs, standing up. "I've done what I wanted to do, so, I guess I'll get going now."
"Megumi," You call for him as he starts walking to the door.
"I don't know much about Itadori, and I know you've known him longest..." You bite the inside of your cheek. "Do you think he's that type of person? To play with a girl's feelings?"
"Itadori's stupid. He fucks up a lot of things, and he doesn't know the first thing about communicating, and he gets on my nerves almost all the time." Megumi stared at your pitiful heartbroken eyes, returning back to his cold demeanor. "But he's a good person, and I know he hurt you, but I can guarantee he didn't mean it. You're the last person he'd want to see hurt because of him."
"Why me? I just don't get it."
"Because he's an absolute dumbass when it comes to pretty girls he likes."
"He wh- wait he likes me? H-How are you sure?"
"Look, Y/n." Megumi sighs. "Whatever you two have going on, I'd appreciate to be kept out of it. If you want answers, you're going to have to talk to him. I might be his best friend, but I like you too, and It's just...awkward for me to help you and him."
"Yeah, I understand that. I'm sorry." You nod slightly. "This won't make anything weird between us, right? We're still friends?"
"I don't know honestly. We'll just have to see."
"Right, right. Well, I'm glad we talked, Megumi. I appreciate you being there for me all this time, and I know it's not up to me, but I hope we stay close. Get home safe." You watch as he nods in agreement halfway through the doorway, before shutting it close, leaving you alone once again.
Your thoughts raced through as you stared at the door, maybe hoping it would be Itadori to show up next even if it was just a silly fantasy. You felt torn between your pride and your fondness. You couldn't deny anymore that you didn't like him. As annoying as he was at first, the subtle caring acts he did felt real to you. Whenever he asked for your notes, or called you late at night, or asked you to hangout, each second felt true to you. It just didn't make sense why he would lie to you.
Not to mention, Megumi also liked you. You don't know when or why, but you wished it could have been sooner. Maybe if you hadn't fallen for Itadori, you and him could have still had a chance. The guy of your dreams could have been all yours if that liar itadori hadn't crept his way into your heart just to break it. Even after his horrible actions though, you still can't help but believe what you two had was real. This whole situation was tearing you apart, so you reached for your phone across the couch to message the only person you could think of who would understand any of this.
