There are times when no words are needed to get a message across. How can something with a brain smaller than the size of a pea can convey something so eloquently...well almost? My butcher bird visitor who delights us with his precision aerodynamic swoops and catches. He can place any bird in its competing space to shame. Come to think of it all the antics of own backyard birds have a story to tell. One step at a time and focus on, the "High Prince of the corvids" in backyard suburban Australia....
This year we have had a bumper crop of coffee berries just from our one tree. With more rain than usual this year it was bound to happen. I decided I would follow in Julian's pursuit/ attempt from years ago, to harvest and process them and make, "The Ward" brand of coffee. It is extremely labour intensive, and I am trying to understand my love for tedious repetitive tasks. I can only come up with the explanation that I must have been one heck of a slave in my past lives. One unlikely to complain and just get into the groove of things. Hence my brain might also be the size of a pea..
First step in the coffee making process is to remove the outer bright red fleshy skin which can be simply popped with your fingers to reveal the coffee bean. This is a sticky process, and the residue red skin is edible and sweet. However, with a little research (exercising my pea brain), this outer berry although sweet, if ingested in large amounts is similar to a laxative. So out of curiosity I tired just a small amount and was surprised by the taste. It wasn't bad and quite pleasant. My pea brained counterpart (resident butcher bird) had the same curiosity, but instead of ingesting the outer coating was more than happy to ingest the bean itself. I had to shoo him away as he was determined to eat more. Again, not understanding why this bird would be attracted to this I put it down to the sweet residue around the bean and thought it was best to check if butcher birds were OK to eat the occasional bean. To my dismay they cannot, and I was thankful that he only had two beans that I observed him eating. It apparently causes hyperactivity and possible cardiac arrest to the bird.
This morning I freshly picked up some more coffee beans and proceeded to the outdoor garden area to begin the process once again. There he was again this time only making observations. I thought, Oh no he's going to want one of these beans again. However much to my surprise he didn't. He caught himself a worm and placed it on the chair close to the table and my working space. He contented to sit and observe my peeling the red berry skins away. I was convinced that he was after my beans again. It certainly wasn't the case. He then proceeded to open his beak in a very wide manner and in his weird bird way- threw up. Then he flew over to the next chair did the same thing again leaving behind his worm and making his birdy mess again. Still observing the beans during his sickly actions. Finally, he flew back to his original chair with his little prize worm and ate it all up.
To me it was pretty darn obvious, it was his way of communicating through his eloquent actions, without words. What the f..k were you tempting me with? His message was, "those bloody coffee beans made me sick", and my curiosity got the better of me.
PS... Although the coffee is a little weak the "Ward Coffee" is not bad at all, with no laxative / palpitations / hyperactive aftereffects.
The Shakespeare drama starring Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley has a stellar cast but is "exploitative" and lacks subtlety.
Period drama has always been a draw card for me. I went in to see this movie without any prior knowledge of how many awards this movie is up for, but with the knowledge that the lead actors were experts in their craft. So, I am not a fan of reading reviews until after I have seen a movie that has had some impact for more than 24 hours after viewing it. Reading the above review, it seems that there is a few points that I beg to differ, of course it's all down to subjective opinion and this review is comparing a movie to a novel. A movie is always a compounded recall of a novel and being not so knowledgeable as the reviewer may be, my knowledge of Shakespear and his common quotations in literature is not so common to me. I find it a very difficult language to navigate and a lot of it is lost. Therefore, in essence the movie educates and creates interest. Curiosity is created from entertainment with a heartfelt approach, and I will be diving into the novel and most definitely Shakespear as my daughter will be focusing on him in her English assessment in term 3.
Buckley gives a very Buckley-ish performance. Like so many of her characters, Agnes is a fierce, earthy rebel who is more honest than anyone else around her. Naturally, the nervous Will is soon smitten, and stammers, "I wish to be hand-fasted to you." It's a warm and sweet romance, but not especially believable.
My thoughts on this statement are different, it would not be convincing in these times but surely the viewer would consider the age it reflects in which it wasn't unusual for courting to be swift, again the movie is compact and therefore does not adjust to the passing of time, but surely the viewers would work that out too.
Another apparent link is that there's some sword-fighting in the play, and Hamnet and Will practised stage sword-fighting in the garden. Again, this may be tear-jerking for the film's viewers, because we saw the sword-fighting scenes an hour earlier. But does the echo say anything revelatory about the alchemical transformation of life into art? Or are we just being tricked into feeling sad?
Oh boy I beg to differ on this point, and it is what I took from the movie the most. Firstly, the reviewer has chosen the wrong scene to use an example. "Revelatory alchemical transformation of life into art", I burst into tears, during the next scene. In which Agnes is up front center watching the play and Hamlet on the stage before her dies and she is so entranced by the performance that she reaches out and offers her hand to him as a sign of utter most compassion and the entire audience follows suit. It was the most emphatic moment by a large group of people. Displaying how art can replicate life, its joys and agony and make us better people. I was in tears because the world we live in currently lacks this, (maybe this is exemplified by the comments people and people of so call standing make on social media and media in general, to cover up lies , wrong doings and their lack of feeling) and art helps put this into perspective and to the forefront.

"It's a tango." Marco maneuvered me out among the dancers. "I love tangos." "I can't dance." "You don't have to dance. I'll do that dancing." Marco hooked an arm around my waist and jerked me up against his dazzling white suit. Then he said, "Pretend you are drowning." I shut my eyes, and the music broke over me like a rainstorm. Marco's leg slid forward against mine and my leg slid back and I seemed to be riveted against him, limb for limb, moving as he moved, without any will or knowledge of my own, and after a while I thought, "It doesn't take two to dance, it only takes one," and I let myself blow and bend like a tree in the wind. "What did I tell you?" Marco's breath scorched my ear. "You're a perfectly respectable dancer." Sylvia Plath - The Bell Jar
Relatable quote which reflects the power and manipulation of one person. Just like "All that Glitters is Not Gold". How so many people and taken along for the ride and fail to wake up and see how we are failing as human beings. No empathy just pointing the finger and dividing people against each other. Sincerely hope things will change and people see the light.

I am really looking forward to the School Summer holiday period. This means time off work and time off school homework assistance'-Both situations exceedingly demanding at present, due to final term exams and assignments for Sofia and school parents who can't be arsed to make school lunches anymore as the end of school year draws near. That means more school lunch orders and end of school special events such as Graduations and formals hence the catering side of things are full on. I was under the impression that things would slow down with the gradual departure of students, which is staggered according to the Year levels, the Year 12's leaving first. This past Friday was the biggest day in terms of workload- 120 individual school lunch orders to prepare as well as catering for 300 guests for the final Year 12 Graduation (sandwiches/ sausage rolls/ small quiches/ fruit/ party pies and the huge celebratory cake. This workload was shared between four ladies including myself. So done and dusted, hopefully the next couple of working days see a reduction and to put my feet up so to speak is going to be a Godsend. However, Friday night and Saturday are my days of rest and to feel human again by doing things I love - Visiting Art Galleries. Redlands Art Gallery put on an exhibition that was tantalizing in my view. It managed to combine fashion, textiles, materials obtained from nature that captured the surroundings of Redlands, Moreton Bay and Stadbroke Island and the ability to recycle and repurpose items to make them into items of beauty. The two artists featured were Karen Benjamin and Delvene Cockatoo Collins.
Karen Benjamin is an environmental artist living at Wellington Point, on Redlands Coast. She is constantly inspired by the diversity of fauna and flora surrounding the local area, but the perplexing amount of rubbish and pollution produced by man has influenced Karenâs art to become a call to action to protect the environment. Working with only natural and recycled materials, Karen makes bold statements through her whimsical, thought provoking art. Traditional crafts such as sewing, weaving, knitting and folk art feature in non-traditional mediums such as plastics, vintage paper, and seedpods. In the past five years Karen has exhibited in over 50 exhibitions, has featured on national television, radio and numerous written publications. Karen conducts regular up-cycling workshops as her main aim is to tread lightly on the planet. Reduce, reuse, recycle.

Delveneâs work is far more than just marks on a page. It embodies a rich connection to country, capturing the Quandamooka soul. Her pieces share the stories, culture, heritage and techniques of thousands of years, passed down from generation to generation by her mother Evelyn and her grandmother Bethel.
Original artworks, ceramics, sculptures and homewares are all handmade on Minjerribah - North Stradbroke Island.
Delvene Cockatoo-Collins Studio
Delvene dresses on display were magnificent, the 3rd photo taken shows the beautiful nature motifs featured and the striking shimmering iridescent rust, gold and black. I was so happy to see her work station- the space in which her ideas come into fruition. Although there was not much on display in regard to Karen Benjamin repertoire of artwork, the opportunity to contribute to her textile work in progress was available. Small calico pieces were provided for anyone to either embroider or draw on with gel pens. These pieces provide the building blocks for the garment which is shown in the first photo. Similar to a fabric mosaic.
Believe I would like to give this a go in the future, what a great inspiration. Art gallery sanity prevails.
My obsession, paint by numbers and the designs are just my thing and my aim is true, as I want to cover the garage walls, it is time consuming. I paint when I can, as working at the school canteen has extended to more than just a few hours. Nice to know that I am someone dependable and I am always happy to fill in. School lunch orders requires good organisation skills and working at a frantic pace. Keeps your mind occupied on the moment. Paint by numbers is always accompanied by music and I have been listening to Elivis Costello. What a revelation. I have an extensive CD collection, and plenty of Best of compilations. Brought this one years ago and only gave it a passing listen. Giving this compilation full attention has reaped it's awards. Shipbuilding is heaven especially the haunting trumpet solo. It' seems at odds with the message the lyrics are conveying, but it essentially isn't, combining the politics, the human heart and aspirations. Brilliant songs are meant for different interpretations. Costello has a fabulous voice. Just too young at the time to soak it all in, so many fantastic songs. Better get back to painting my sardines.

This one did make it through customs. It seems the simple things in life have the most meaning and weigh heavy on sentimentality. This was my dad's unusual find. Growing up in the war meant that toys were a scarcity and children had to make do or invent games. Kids are kids in the end and joy is what matters even if the whole world around you was tumultuous. Instead of marbles rocks were sought out as a desirable substitute. Dad came across this so-called rock with peculiar holes. With childlike curiosity he poked it around and then blew into it discovering its high-pitched whistle. It wasn't reserved for any games but kept as a curio. My parents first ventured back to Italy in 1975. I was too little to remember anything, but memories were retained by family films void of sound. Dad and his Super 8 film camera which was all the rage back then. We visited his childhood home as did many other relatives. This little curio did not make its journey to the other side of the planet at this stage; it had remained snug in my father's chosen hiding spot. It wasn't until renovations were being made that my Great Aunt had located this hidden gem and kindly passed it on to my dad's cousin who made his way back to Australia. It was a wonderful surprise for my father to be reunited with his childhood treasure.
Julian a few months back trimmed mum's lemon tree with his girlfriend Georgia. Mum at any given chance is more than happy to reminisce. Dad was a fine gardener, the best when it came to grafting and the lemons, figs and oranges were always on hand. Sometimes even a glut. (Didn't mind the exchange of figs for chocolate, an agreement of terms with the Greek service station owner, years back when I was a kid). Mum afterwards recalled the whistle which intrigued Julian and now he safely keeps. A curio passed on to 1st Grandson. He did his research and it's not a rock but its ceramic and what an interesting background it has. If only dad had a chance to discover its mystery.
The whistle is the oldest sound toy in the world. The Caltagirone terracotta whistle contains art, history and ancient traditions.
Simple Minds - Your Name In Lights (Official Audio)  Getting motivated to post anything these days is a struggle. Been through some personal turmoil with extended family which is daunting and draining to the extent that it has had an effect on my health. It shouldnât be that way, but it is, and its not gonna change in any hurry, Accept, move on and rise above. Hardly motivated that I didnât reflect on my concert experience to see Simple Minds and others at the beginning of the year which also included travel to Melbourne. If it had been now I would not have coped stamina and health wise. However reflecting back my bucket list wish was ticked off especially with the last gig at Star Casino with the surreal experience of being possibly uncomfortably closeup ( pleasantly disturbed) to my musical heroes.(no need to time travel to the pubs and clubs of the early 80â˛s which I always thought would only provide that opportunity). Star casino- Gold Coast not my preference to venture there with all that glitz and glamour. Itâs so pretentious, provides shit parking with a whole heap of entitled upstarts and so easy to get lost. Which we did. In the end it was far more than I expected.
Now the song - Your name in lights- well finally a kick up the arse to focus on things that i enjoy. As always the mantra remains in the same camp with this band.  To remain optimistic, get over hardships and that there is light at the end of tunnel. I really like the song with its strong synth base. I am sure if I was on a road trip without the radio blaring that it has such a distinctive guitar chime that alone would replay quite easily in my head. Which is one of my most favourite things seeing the world rush past through a car window with some kind of sound track in my head. Thanks to my dear hubby driving, much prefer being the passenger. Name in lights - thatâs a real nod to self worth and being recognized, It can be applied not only to superstars but anyone in general. It does have an encompassing comfort feel about it. Especially the gentle shift chord changes in the chorus, like a slow rising and falling tide. I really like the call and response which has been used before in Simple Minds songs.  âAll the things she saysâ is a clear example.  I believe that this song allows for some leeway for changes in arrangements when it does get played live especially in regards to the rhythm section. There is plenty of room for change as the electronic drum pattern is stock standard. Good song all up and love the dreamy element, something I have always enjoyed in music. Â

This will probably be my Yamba theme song, it's a hybrid Concrete Blonde/Beaches song, goth surf vibes, pasty skin mellowing out in the sunrays, is that possible....middle 8 guitar solo is sublime, polar opposites do attract.
