keep in mind that this is BEFORE shrek bursts into the scene. she was two seconds away from cheating on shrek after being with charming for 5 minutes (let's say it's 5 minutes due to the length of the "I need a hero" song being sang by charm's mother) as she was literally about to kiss him.

i think about his debut scene when you see him wear the bonnet before he takes it off.

and yes that's 99% meant for comedic reasons, but for a character analysis' sake he's not too vain enough to not even put it on because he's afraid he would look stupid. he embraces the goofiness of it without much of a second thought.

and then there's the balcony scene. his chosen stance exudes his confidence, but also his almost laxidasical attitude towards the situation at hand. the grin is equal "Thousand dollar smile" and a goading of just trying out the setup to see how it goes. to just feel the thrill of the moment without thinking too hard.

additionally there's the american idol scene that is probably the most perfect example of simultaneously displaying charm's narcissism while also not taking himself too seriously. i mean he playfully calls his own rear a tush, per the lyrics of the song. i mean the song ITSELF is in a playful narcissistic tone, it couldn't be more obvious. and the very act of charm auditioning at all still adds to his character; if he was a pure narcissist it's not hard to think he wouldn't have even bothered thinking he was better than the rest, or at the very least did something like "I'm just going to stand here and you're going to thank me for my beauty 😼" before getting kicked off stage, right?

this is what makes me theorize that charm's self absorbed behavior is just that, a learned behavior thanks to his mother. his real personality as his natural inclination to goof off is melded into that behavior, which is the outcome we see now.

and this theory isn't even made for the sake of charm; i really theorized this because his personality hinges on fiona and her reaction at the end of their dance. it's very plainly shown she doesn't like pompous, shallow etc men so the only reasoning behind not only her soft smile but her actual agreement to kiss can only mean that she not only saw that there was something real, but that it was worthy of her attraction to him. there had to be a positive aspect of him.
