𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗽.

                    ❛        𝚢𝚘𝚞'𝚛𝚎  𝚠𝚊𝚛𝚖.        ❜        is   the   first   thing   he   says   once   he   can   muster   the   energy   to   speak.     &   it’s   true.   he  had  been  half-expecting   cold   toes   against   the   backs   of   his  legs  ,   but   he   instead  was   greeted   by   warmth.    it   makes  him   smile   into   his   pillow   ,    his   eyes   finally   fluttering   open.    he   doesn’t   want   to   turn  over   to   face   her   ,   though   ,    too   content   in   this   position  ,   too   content   being   held   like   this.    feels   nice.   feels   very   nice.      ❛        how   was   work   ?    was  it   a  good   shift   ?        ❜        it’s   a   light   conversation   starter   ,   in   case   she’s   too   tired   for   anything   deeper   &   heavier.   he   enjoys   asking  her  about  her  day   ,  or  her   night  ---   &   he  knows  she  does  the  same  thing  with  him.

                         so   ,   he   reaches   to   roll   of   the   right-arm   sleeve  of   his   flannel   ,   lifting   his   arm   to   show   her   the   jagged   scar   along   his   forearm.        ❛        got   this   when  i   was   seventeen   . . .   &   admittedly   ,   breaking   through   an   old   house’s   window   &   getting  myself   cut.   what  ?   i   needed   to   open   the   door   ,   &   i   didn’t   have   my   lock-picking   equipment.   it   seemed   like   a   good   idea   at   the   time   ,   sue   me.             ❜          he   had   needed  a  place  to   crash   ,   &   that   house  had  seemed   like  the   perfect   opportunity.   abandoned.   empty.   near   the  water.   he   just   needed   to   sleep.

                    ❛       𝚢𝚘𝚞'𝚛𝚎  𝚜𝚘  𝚕𝚞𝚌𝚔𝚢    that   you’re   cute   ,   y’know   that   ?         ❜         it   feels   good  to  be  able  to  tease  somebody   like  this   ,   to   be   able  to   love  somebody   like   this.   for  him  to  love  ,    &   for   it   to  be   returned.    he  wishes   that   it   wasn’t   as   uncommon   as   it   was   ,    requited   love.   then   again   ,   duke’s   luck   always   seems   to   run   out   in   the   romance   department.    well.   it   used   to.   because   now   he’s   got   her   ,    &   she  looks   at  him   the   way  that   he  looks   at   her.   maybe   for   once   it’s   gotten   what   he’s   wanted.   he   won’t   jinx   it   ,   won’t   speak   things   aloud  under  the   threat  of   him   waking  up   ,   &   this   all   being   just   a   dream.    that   wouldn’t   surprise  him   ,   given   the  town   he’s   resided   in.        ❛       . . .   i   make   you   happy    ?         ❜         yes   ,   she’s   given  him   the   other   synonyms.    thrilled.  delighted.   glad.   but  . . .   this   ?   this   he  needs   to   know.   he  needs  to  hear  it   like   that.   happy.  because   really   ,   isn’t   that   all   that   matters   ?

                    ❛        𝚒𝚝  𝚐𝚘𝚝  𝚊  𝚜𝚝𝚘𝚛𝚢  ?        ❜        duke’s   found   that   a   litany   of   old   scars   carry   the   best   stories  ,   knows   he   can   look   at   his   own   skin   &   tell   tales  for  ages.  well.    not   every   scar   he’s   gotten   is   interesting   ,   nor   is   its   story   that   fascinating.   sometimes  it  was   something   simple   ,   like   burning   his   hand   cooking   or   cutting  his   arm   on   a  sharp   edge   of   his   boat.   but   there   are   those   that   do   have   stories.   most   of   them  with   illegal  connotations   ,   but   stories   nonetheless.      ❛         everybody   knows   that   the   best   scars   are   the   ones   that   have   a   good   story   behind   it.   just   more   fun   that   way.            ❜

et cetera

                    ❛       𝚊𝚠  ,  𝚗𝚘𝚠  ,  ---    that’s   not   how   friends   talk   to   one   another.    &   i   feel  like  at  this  point   ,    we’re   . . .   we’re   friends.         ❜        open  to  mutuals.

                    ❛       𝚖𝚢  𝚋𝚘𝚜𝚜  𝚒𝚜  𝚊  𝚍𝚒𝚌𝚔.         ❜       his  voice  is  low   ,   dropping   down  to  a   whisper   that   sounds   like  he’s   sharing   gossip   with   her.     the   edge   of   his   lips   upturn   into   a   teasing   grin   ,   palms   gentle   as   they   trace   up   the   length   of   her   ribs.         ❛        but   i   think   i   can   steal   some  time   off   . . .   what’s   gonna   happen   ,  i  get   fired   ?          ❜         he   knows   it’s   a   stupid   joke   ,   knows   that   he   kids   a   lot   about   his  occupation   ,   or   his   “imaginary   boss”.    but   it   makes   her   smile   ,   every   single   time.    &   duke’s   sure   that’s   an  excuse   enough   to  keep   making   it   over   &   over   again   ,   until   she   tells   him  it’s   too   repetitive.   he’d  hate  to  see  that  smile  of  hers   go  away  in  any  circumstance  ,  especially  if  it’s  his   fault.                        ❛        what   do   y’wanna  do   on   your  weekend   off   ?   we   could   go   out   of   town   . . .   or   take   the   rouge   out   ----   ?          ❜
