The Dubble Archives: Star86

After almost a year, we're finally releasing the new and remade version of the offline mod! We realized the old one could've been improved, there were a lot of bugs as well, and the setup was fairly technical for most users. But this release fixes that.

You do not need to download multiple files anymore, there is only one. It is bundled with the .unity3d files, all of the cache, and most importantly, our new launcher!

With it, you can easily copy the cache folder to the required location without doing it manually, or create/backup avatars without doing it yourself. And if you don't want to keep launching two different executables, you can start playing the game from the launcher itself.

What's changed?

Currency saving/loading works (silver, gold)

XP (and also level) saving/loading works

Profile menu works

Chat log works (previously it did not log your messages)

Missing planets send you back to the wardrobe

Purchasing items from the shop works (you'll lose them if you restart though)

Removed minimap lag, no need to make it slow on modern computers

Zooming is no longer tied to your FPS

VSync is forced enabled

Ship editor works, but doors won't open, furniture doesn't work and your ship will reset if you exit ship editor

Avatar preview should be more stable with updating

New launcher!

However, we still do not have any new files, so you are only able to go to the food system, ninja system, haunted system + the haunted maze. QB City kind of works, but it won't let you walk around or anything, since we don't even have the original ship module data for it, furthermore, the ship functionality is tied to this, which is still buggy, as we've said above.

Instructions

First, download the file provided above, unzip it to a folder somewhere on your desktop for example.

Run StarLauncher.exe and select Copy cache. That will copy everything from the Cache folder into the required location. Then select Create avatar and choose whichever species you want to use. Finally, select Play, and you should be able to play!

Troubleshooting

As this mod is still buggy, you can't play without encountering bugs. However, we know some solutions for a few of them:

Problem: I can't go to the galaxy map or to a planet!

Solution: Close the game and try copying cache again until it works.

Problem: There are many wardrobe items that keep loading!

Solution: This is not a bug (sort of). This is due to a lot of assets missing from the cache, which we don't currently have. If you believe you have cache on your old computer, please check the credits section below for the Discord server invite.

This time, we invited you to vote the first "Annual Planet Showdown Tournament" in every the end of the year.

20 Planets (Including non-planets) are participating the tournament to determine where the planet is the best.

The planets are placed in the brackets of two. The planet with the most votes moves to next round until the finals.

The deadline is 12:00 AM, 25th December 2023 (Pacific Time)

Introducing our (unofficially official) mascot for the Dubble Archives, Shebin!

On Monday, 29th August 2022, a user by the name of Joker asked for help to potentially look through their old hard drive to find any Star86 related files.

We did not have any hope at first, since the search did not yield anything interesting other than some folders that barely contained anything. That's until Joker was asked to install the app called Everything and filter the search to look for all files with the extension unity3d, since that's what most web versions of Unity games had.

Finally, the search yielded FIVE blb_web.unity3d files. That was a success! However, we came to a sudden realization. That file was only around two megabytes large. The game certainly had WAY more content than this! (All those files were different versions, but they didn't have much difference anyways.)

The file, when extracted, contained all the game scripts, as well as few stuff related to the game's launch process - it contained a scene for game loading, a scene for planet loading (?), garbage collection and a scene that shows when the game malfunctions.

After digging through that file, we then looked at the same picture Joker had sent us. Somehow, we've missed that there were so MANY other files related to Star86! The picture cut off very soon, but that gave us a brief summary of what the search found. The first files found were character bones and skins.

We then looked at those other files and found many different assets, including but not limited to: the Ninja planet, the maze, Haunted planet, the Doo character, a weird Mee character, a gray Cubee, some props, the skybox textures, ship modules, hats...

The dubbles did not have any textures included, but maybe they will be also found soon!

We also tinkered with some scripts, and now we are trying to make a server for Star86, at least a bare bones one so that we can at least partially revive the client. It may take some time though.

Star86 Records (previously known as BigLittleRecords) was a YouTube channel that uploaded all music Dubbles created and published onto the channel. Opposed to recording videos, creating and publishing music didn't require a membership and the music could last way longer than just one minute. You didn't have to wear any special hat to record music, you only needed a mixing table and a disc. After all, the game was about experiencing music.

This channel contains around 2k music, which totals to around 63 hours of music - around 2.6 days.

The mixer could be accessed by pressing the REC button in the music hotbar menu. It only worked when you bought a Mixing Table.

To save a song to your computer, you needed a blank disc, but if you wanted to send a song to the Star86 Records channel, you needed to buy a master disc.

Dubble TV (previously known as BigLittleFilmClub) was a YouTube channel that uploaded all videos that Dubbles recorded through their Camera hat, which was only accessible to VIP members. Each video could be maximally one minute long, however the Star86 staff could upload videos longer than that.

All the videos on the channel equal to around 3 days of footage. There's around 4.9k videos.

To record a video, you needed VIP membership for the Camera hat and one gold for one film reel.
