When a USAF General Called Them ‘Mexican Banditos’…

A visiting general saw the Ravens at Long Tieng and was appalled by their civilian clothes, cowboy hats, mustaches, and heavily armed appearance.

He called them a ragged band of Mexican banditos.

The pilots didn’t argue.

They posed for this photo.

These were the Forward Air Controllers of America’s most secret war in Laos, Project 404, the Steve Canyon Program. Sheep-dipped pilots flying unmarked O-1 Bird Dogs and T-28 Trojans low and slow over the Ho Chi Minh Trail, marking targets for strikes the world wasn’t supposed to know about.

They operated in the gray with almost zero oversight while Air America dropped propaganda leaflets alongside rice bags. Their full story stayed classified for years.

This photo became legend, the perfect symbol of their maverick spirit.

Shark-mouthed warriors of the sky…..before the brass shut it down.

Early 1966, Quang Ngai, South Vietnam. These USAF O-1 Bird Dog forward air controllers sat on the hot dirt strip with custom red shark-mouth nose art roaring on their cowlings, hand designed by Maj. Richard B. Davis (“Bird Dog 40”), the Air Liaison Officer for the 2nd ARVN Division.

These “jeeps with wings” were the eyes of the battlefield: low, slow, unarmed except for smoke rockets and guts. They spotted VC positions, marked targets for the fast-movers, adjusted artillery, and saved countless lives in I Corps… all while wearing a little attitude on their noses.

Until higher-ups ordered the art removed. “Uniformity” won. But for a brief, proud moment, these FACs flew with teeth.

Captured by FAC legend Chuck McCalip, who recently posted it with a heartfelt RIP to the man who designed it.

Respect to every Bird Dog, Jake, and Togo pilot and crew who flew out of Quang Ngai and Tam Ky.
