I write a prolific amount of Kanej/SOC fan fic and publish on A03. Set in the post-canon/canon-compliant Grishaverse, based on the books by Leigh Bardugo.

The KIDS Act, ostensibly aimed at protecting children, will raise the risk for journalists, dissidents, and whistleblowers.

"Democrats and Republicans in Congress have struck a deal on a bill they say will help keep children and teens safe online. The KIDS Act could pass on the House floor as soon as next week; if enacted, it would fundamentally change the way everyone — not just kids — accesses the internet.

At stake is your ability to use many social media platforms without revealing your identity.

That’s because the KIDS Act at least strongly incentivizes — and, for some services, outright requires — age verification. Many platforms will turn to age verification to avoid potential liability under the law. Companies like X, video-sharing services like Vimeo, and others with a history of users’ populating social feeds with edgy content may be required to verify users’ ages because they host a certain amount of content deemed “sexual material harmful to minors,” a term that the KIDS Act defines broadly.

That’s a big problem for people who need to be able to use the internet anonymously, since, as Taylor Lorenz has previously written about in The Intercept, “there’s no way to reliably verify someone’s age without verifying who they are.”

Threats to online anonymity harm everyone, but one group is often overlooked: journalists and the sources who talk to them. Age verification requirements will help the Trump administration carry out its vendetta against the press by creating new avenues to identify journalists’ confidential sources. [...]

Mandating age verification effectively hands Big Tech and the government a skeleton key to the identities of every whistleblower, dissident, and investigative reporter who uses online platforms, not to mention everyone else, including children. This kind of surveillance on steroids that surrenders our right to speak, report, and read the news anonymously won’t make anyone safer."

I am fascinated by Twitter discourse that, apparently, Shane and Ilya's love is POC x White Guy with all Racism vs Rich Guy consequences. That Ilya invalidates Shane's struggles and fears of coming out because he's not risking as much and he's privileged compared to Asian boy in Canada.

... Do people really not understand that Heated Rivalry is POC x POC and Trauma Box vs Trauma Box? 😔 Do they watch the show blindfolded because Ilya is risking way more than social acceptance (namely, freedom and life itself) and it's precisely because of this he struggles to empathize with Shane's fears (that seem such low stakes in comparison).

You're absolutely correct about POC x POC. If you were born after the Iron Curtain fell, and especially if you were born after 9/11, it's easy to forget just how exoticized and villainized Russians were in the news, the media, and public consciousness. They were our stock villains in action movies and TV shows for 50+ years, right up until they were largely phased out and replaced with the more politically-expedient "brown terrorist" in the 90s and 2000s.

The Soviet Union kept a tight lid on what happened there - they did not permit many "Western" travelers into the USSR, or allow its citizens to travel to Western countries, except on official business. The news was highly censored within the country and even more highly censored if it was intended for a global audience. Public perception of Russians (just Slavs in general) was (and still is) dictated by USAmerican Cold-War propaganda, on top of centuries of Western European exoticization and orientalist attitudes about Russia.

Even now, the Russian character is often a grudging ally or an inscrutable other that has to overcome distrust first before the other characters (and the audience) will accept or trust them. Even now, Russian characters seem to be initially regarded with suspicion that they have ulterior motives or split loyalties. Russians and people from former Soviet states are still often stock villains - just now, they're bratva rather than KGB. And this is what informs people's opinions of Ilya in-universe (and Russians IRL) - the lingering effects of 50+ years of anti-Russian propaganda framing people that look and sound like him as the villain.

So, true, Ilya is of European descent and has a fair complexion, but he still experiences life in North America to some extent as a racialized Other, in the same way that Irish, Italian, Polish, and German immigrants have been othered at different points in North American history. He's white-complected, which does confer quite a lot of privilege but by itself isn't enough for him to completely assimilate into Whiteness™. Unless he can manage to erase every trace of his Russian-ness including his accent, he will always be perceived as Russian and subject to prejudices about his racial identity.

This! You're so right with your facts, thank you, I couldn't articulate it as great. It would be so great if people were aware that "white priviledge" only counts in USA and western Europe and the rest of white people should not be swept under the same rug for "Shane is a minority while Ilya has it easy because he looks white" claim that is seen so often. Are these white people in the same room with us? Is Ilya not subject to horrible stereotypes and another "Slav people are subhuman and barbaric" narrative that was used for centuries to oppress Eastern European "white" people? One thing for it to be mentioned in canon as a display of the era or used as a plot device, but let's count all the times Ilya talks like a dumb caveman in fics where he supposedly spent >10 years speaking only English in 95% cases. People mistake Rozanov's defence and immigrant survival mechanism for priviledge, and that could not horrify me more.

I want to add the replies from @milessiana as well, which touches on another extremely sad reality for Ilya (that luckily is talked about in the fandom a bit more often)

Ilya has conditional whiteness in the US and Canada. He can pass, but as soon as he opens his mouth and someone hears his accent, he is other.

As someone who also has conditional whiteness and has to talk to crowds of hundreds for my job, sometimes I look out at the audience and I wonder which ones hate me for my last name. And I’m not famous.

Ilya knows people hate him for being all the things he is, but he doesn’t know which people hate him for which reasons. Is this someone who thinks he trash talks too much, or someone who thinks he is an existential threat to freedom? Which ones are mad because he tricked them by being fair skinned but not white enough for them? Which ones just root for another team and like to boo? Which ones are fellow Russians who disapprove of his queerness and could get him or his family in deep shit? They all look the same. And that’s a lot to live with.

a lost journal entry from kaz’s da where he documents all of baby kaz’s little quirks but his favorite is that kaz first learns to love the world through touch; he relishes in the softness of blankets and flower petals and the fur of the barn cat, the scruff of his da’s beard and the rough patterns of the tree trunks surrounding the farmhouse, he digs his fingernails into mashed potatoes and egg yolk and frosted cake and laughs wildly at the bizarreness of it.

it’s funny, whenever baby kaz encounters something new, his first instinct is to reach for it with an open palm and bask in the feeling. his da and jordie have made a game out of finding the weirdest new sensations for him to judge: a cold glass of water, a kiss from the cat, bubbly foam, bread dough, a bowl of pomegranate seeds, an earthworm freshly plucked from the ground, the sinewy guts of a pumpkin.

he notices that kaz especially loves his and jordie’s hands—there’s a contrast between his own large, callused fingers and jordie’s smooth, lanky ones (save for a few scrapes and scars from climbing in places he probably shouldn’t have been), and it melts his heart whenever kaz holds onto that skin to skin contact and doesn’t let go.

it fills him with so much joy he decides that kaz’s touch must be magic, and he can’t wait to watch him fill up other people’s worlds with it as he gets older.

one time when I was little me and my family were out to eat and for whatever reason my parents decided to leave a cash tip instead of just writing it on the bill and I was SO worried that someone would steal our waiter’s tip I just kept looking back at the table until eventually my parents were like “if you’re so worried about him getting it, just go hand to him” and I the most socially anxious child you will ever meet was horrified by the prospect of doing that but I was apparently more horrified at the prospect of this guy not getting his tip because I did go up and hand it to him, I don’t remember his reaction though. anyway all this to say this baby Kaz behavior to me, a story Jordie and his dad would fondly recall in the future.
