I really like the way The Wiz is a psychological study of Dorothy's personal growth in a way that no other adaptation is.
In the beginning we learn that Dorothy not only has a very stagnant personal life, but also a stagnant professional one. She is stuck teaching kindergarten and does not want to apply to work with older kids because she is both comfortable where she is and afraid of trying new things. Thus, when she lands in Oz, Munchkinland, the people are childlike and the setting is reminiscent of a playground. Here she must confront her initial fear and accept her role as an adult who has helped the Munchkins. Once she accepts this she can move onto the next location.
Similarly, her confrontations and inclusion of the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion are her grappling of her own perceived flaws (her intelligence, her connection to her home and family, her timidity). By going on a journey with these aspects of herself, and engaging with them and encouraging them, by the end she realizes these traits were not only within her all along, they were apparent to others. She just had to recognize them herself and accept them in order to grow. Which she does, especially when confronted with the Wizard himself, who represents a version of herself that wound itself tighter and tighter, and never made an effort to step out of her comfort zone or change as a person. By the end of the film Dorothy's final song externally points to her new perspective on life, her personhood, and her place in the world. This version of the stroy is one about Dorothy as a character and her arc, rather than a fun little fairy tale. It looks at the concept as a story of personal change and finding a place in your world through the abstract conceptualization of "home," rather than a literalization.
This is possibly the only adaptation where the "it was all a dream" pull really draws me in, because the characters even admit it. Even if it were all a dream, the love and the growth was real.
I sometimes despair of getting anything quite simple and honest done in this world by the help of men.
