“Most breeds can. However, I won’t say it’s impossible for a dragon to be incapable of performing magic. Usually it is instinctual. However, it appears your dragon is more domesticated than most. There’s a possibility that it simply hasn’t awoken. I could try a few diagnostics to attempt to figure out the sub-species of dragon, and whether or not teaching it magic is out of the question…”

Gelwein made a few taps on his tablet, moving between a few screens and popups. “…Tell me, how did you come into possession of this dragon in the first place? Did you find it in a specific part of the islands here? It doesn’t seem like a common breed, at least…”

Ren looked at Draco. He thought he knew everything about the dragon, but perhaps there was still more to discover. He didn’t even know what kind of dragon Draco was. All he knew is that he was a dragon. Maybe he didn’t know that much about his friend after all.

“I see. That’s nice,” Mist said. “I like gardening myself- I think I’m not half bad at growing potted flowers. But, I have tried my hand at farming in the past. Unfortunately, I think it’s fair to say that it’s not for me. There’s a lot more work to be done, when maintaining a whole big field.”

“But, if you ever want to give it a try, I know just the place,” she said. “I know! Why don’t I give you something to practice growing on your own? Based on how they turn out, I’ll be able to judge whether or not you’ve got a knack for farming.”

Ren nodded. The size difference of the garden he helped tend and an average farm was quite large, but he considered himself physically fit. He had been running around his whole life.

“Hmm.” As the monster continued its rampage against the targets, Gelwein began making a number of mental notes to himself. Overall, it was less impressive than he’d hoped- but not without promise. After all, a dragon was a dragon. Even the most pathetic dragon of all time would still a cut above most other monsters- and this was not a pathetic display. 

Once all the targets were destroyed, and the dragon had returned to its master, Gelwein opened up a small portal, and caught the electronic tablet that fell out of it before it closed. He pressed a few buttons on it, navigating to a white loading screen.

“The official data is still being processed. However, I can give you my initial impressions. Starting off with your strengths, I will complement you on your monster-handling. With very little instruction, your dragon behaved exactly as you instructed. For a novice, that is not half-bad. I won’t be awarding points for style, but your dragon does have some power behind its strikes. With a bit of training, I could teach it to use its strength more efficiently. I assume it does not know any magic, or else it would have used it?”

“Thank you, Sir.” It was considerably high praise coming from Gelwein - based on how he had been acting the whole time. Ren was proud of Draco for doing so well. If they weren’t linked by dragon blood, then perhaps he would have had a lot more trouble training him.

Monster Volleyball || [Open]

“Oh, Shade Apartments, hmm?” Mist hummed. Apparently, it was starting to just become a volleyball game for monsters, as she once again made no move to try and hit the ball. This time, though, Torte seemed to have an easier time getting it over the net all by himself.

“I used to live there, you know. It was a real downer. Say, you don’t happen to have a penchant for farm work, do you? If so, I might be able to work something out for you. But it won’t be easy.”

“Yeah...I know what you mean.” Once he saved up a bit more, Ren planned to move. For the mean time, he would have to manage. His mother would probably say he should be thankful to have a home at all.

“Fantastic!” Mist beamed, clasping her hands together in a manner so pleased, she seemed to miss the ball coming her way. Torte seemed to pick up the slack, though, diving and hitting it just in time, saving it from touching the ground. Prince Turnips sent it soaring back to the other side.

“Do you live nearby, Ren? I live over on Mysterio Drive. We should exchange contact information, so we can meet up again soon. Now that Turnips is getting bigger, it’s hard to give him the enrichment a dragon deserves. Having a playmate would help sooo much!”

Distracted by their conversation, Ren didn’t take note of the ball coming his way, but luckily Emery-Rose did and jumped up, hitting the ball back over the net.

“Hmm. Given the fact that you’re complete novices, I suppose it is acceptable. Your dragon understands your commands and obeys, at the very least. And there is certainly some amount of power there. Of course, that was only one target. Let’s see if you can keep it up.” Gelwein snapped his fingers, and even more targets appeared- including ones on the walls and ceiling. “Destroy all of the targets I’ve put up. Once you do that, I should have enough data to give you an analysis that will actually mean something.”

Ren wasn’t sure how to respond to the man’s blunt answer (he thought Draco did pretty good), so he decided not to and to instead focus on the task at hand. 

He looked to Draco and asked, “Can you hit all of those targets, bud?” Draco charged at the first target and once again smashed the target with his head. He wasted no time breaking the next, closest target, this time with his tail. One after another, the crimson dragon attacked all of the targets, flying up to get the higher ones and returning to the floor with a proud smile once he was done.
