The Malfoy Heir

Draco Malfoy procrastinates unsightly amounts. Lucius would always pester him about finishing the book he had given him, writing that letter to Bellatrix (that he never did finish) and other things that the young Malfoy never could bring himself to do which led his Father to believe he was slow and unwitting as a very young child. However, as he grew up, Lucius believed it was mostly down to his stubborn and lazy approach to things he didn’t quite want to do, although perfectly capable.

It had become a habit for him in his second year to hang around in the Slytherin Common Room when he wanted to waste time. With the Daily Prophet or a hefty book at his lap, but eyes instead scouring the same old bunch of people that tended to spend most of their day there. Draco picked up on a lot of things doing this - little things - such as how Crabbe liked to pick his nose when he thought no one was looking or how the Carrow twins always looked at one another before speaking.

           Draco was always a very picky eater; he would prefer to eat nothing all day than eat something he didn’t particularly care for. This habit developed because of the exquisitely rich meals he would receive at the Manor, dressed lavishly with exotic condiments and served in fine crockery, to be eaten with silverware of the highest standards.

          Pumpkin juice; Cornish Pasties; flavourless chicken; dry toast and sticky marmalade jam tops. Draco’s stomach would squirm in disgust at the thought of the very things. It wasn’t so much the bitter taste that the marmalade left on his lips, but the fact that the top of the jar always left his fingers sticky and uncomfortable. 

          Moreover, having sat with Crabbe and Goyle most of his life at the Slytherin table, he always seemed to lose his appetite at supper time. Drool running down their greasy chins as they gobbled yet another chicken drumstick then making their way straight to the chips with their grubby fingers, smearing grease all over them. Draco would sit there fiddling absently with the Cumberland sausage on his china plate.

It was infrared; ablaze. It lapped at his pale ankles, burning away material to taste the sweet, succulent flesh. The roaring dragon climbed higher with a rumbling greed at its first savour of its conquest. 

Draco didn’t wail nor screech for his life - he was calm, silent. He promised he wouldn’t cry nor break. Feeling the fire burn through the material of his trousers and lick at his untouched skin, he trembled violently for the agony, oh Gods, the agony; but he did not break. He remained silent and calm. 

The fire had reached him, and, as it licked at his clothes and singed the tips of his pale hair, Draco finally broke and cried out. His wide, frightened eyes met his own ones through the flames. Tears came to Draco’s eyes but he did not close them.

He no longer dreamed of being devoured by the wildfire, but instead he watched himself. He watched himself burn in them.

Draco drew his wand out of the sleeve of his tunic and held it lightly in his right hand. He watched the other in the flames: own face, his lovely, cold, aristocratic face, and willed himself to look down.

The flames reached out for him and he watched Draco - himself - catch fire. He watched himself as he threw his head back and screamed in mingled pain and terror, and he finally found the courage to say the words.         “—Avada Kedavra.”
