KIN:

❝A group of persons descended from a common ancestor or constituting a people, clan, tribe, or family.

Unlike with marking, there is a process every Dragon Slayer will go through that is called Kinship and it is involuntary. Kinship is something that most animals feel on a biological level, it's based on an evolutionary strategy that there is strength in numbers, it is where your loyalties lie and more often than not Kinship comes from blood/familial ties however it is not always that simple. More often than not, especially in orphaned Dragon Slayers, Kinship will spring in those that will become ingrained in their souls. It's as if their body and minds can tell that other person is someone who is supposed to be in their life.

Kinship is not something that has to be shown through a mark, generally there is no physical change in anyone but there is a very large change on the mental/emotional level that makes it hard, but not impossible, for two individuals to ignore. Generally, non-familial Kinship takes more time to develop, it is not an instantaneous recognition but something that builds as friendship does, of course this is not always the case and sometimes, especially with two Dragon Slayers, the connection is there upon first meeting.

BEHAVIOUR:

There are two possibilities when a Kinship is recognised in a Dragon Slayer, they will either fight the compulsion to view the other person as their Kin due to either their nature or simple dislike of the fact something was decided without their consent OR they will accept the connection and choose to behave like family to the other person.

Denial: Denial is very common behaviour for those who are aware of but have not accepted another person as Kin, they will reject the idea as it was not their decision, even so much that they go as far as to simply try and ignore the individual who is their Kin.

Aggression: Along with denial, aggression is also common behaviour for those who do not believe who the person is their Kin. Most times it is jsut aggressive behaviour in general but it can be directed at others who decide to interfere, physical aggression may occur towards the Kin too however it will never be enough to injure the person severely.

Possessive/over protective: When a person finds someone who is deemed as Kin, whether they have accepted it or not, there will always be a very possessive and overprotective nature within them when regarding that person. Even if outwardly they act as though they hate the other, they simply cannot help but protect the person their body recognises as family. Accompanying this, Dragon Slayers can get very jealous if their Kin finds a lover/very close friend as they will feel as though they are not getting enough of their attention and time, this is NOT a jealousy based on romantic love but purely platonic.

Caring: After the Kin has been accepted and the bonds strengthened further the Dragon Slayer will care for the other immensely. They will behave as though the person is their biological family in most cases, unless they already are then there will be no denial, and will do pretty much anything for them. Even if it is not in their normal personality.

If the other individual who is Kin is not a Dragon Slayer, they will still feel the compulsion to treat the other as though they are family however they can deny the feelings better. Unlike Dragon Slayers however, they will not entirely understand why it is happening.

Six fucking hours, that’s how long he had been trailing behind the pink haired woman and he had half a mind to simply give up when she finally came to a stop about a mile away from where they both knew the guild she was going to take down sat. Of course Jellal had no objections to Meredy going off on her own, he was never one to be a bigot simply because he had a soft spot for the girl, but neither was he stupid enough to not send back up in case she required it.

Which from the Magic floating around the area, the sheer power he could feel emanating from even this distance, she sure as hell was going to need it. She seemed to notice that however and still she was planning to go in there, the sheer stupidity of the woman whose pride wouldn’t allow her to back down from a challenge had him growling low in his throat. He was sitting far enough away that she wouldn’t have heard it though and he swore under his breath as he muttered.

SOUND MAGIC:

Erik was born with his Magic, it was something he inherited through a latent gene in his Mother Yara, and was therefore able to always hear perfectly, something that haunted him beyond belief in the Tower.

Erik hears a persons soul, he gets an all access pass to their inner most desires, their fears, he doesn’t just get to see/hear into their mind and it is something that will ALWAYS piss him off when people call him a ‘mind reader’. He doesn’t do it, it isn’t what he does, he is not an eighty year old psychic living out of a trailer.

Erik can see/feel the being’s characteristics, personality, feelings, memories, whether they even have a soul, damage others’ souls have endured. This does mean he can read a person thoughts as well but it is not all he can do, he can also hear the way their body functions, if their heart rate increases or lessens, if there is a blockage in their body or mind, he can tell, he can sense when a person body reacts, muscles tightening in specific areas, and he can therefore react appropriately

There are of course ways of getting around this, though it takes a lot of effort, and requires either building up mental shields ( something that takes a lot of skill and patience ) or a person must be beyond confused, unable to know what exactly they are going to do and act completely on impulse. Of course specific muscles moving will be an indication of what is going to happen but it is often not fast enough to respond to. This is why Erik had such a difficult time fighting Natsu, he acted entirely on impulse and didn’t think about what he was doing at all.
