thinking about if steve had gotten murdered pre-serum. impossible crime to solve bc of how many people he pissed off on the daily + nobody wants to investigate anyways, given the fact that steve was always expected to die young regardless.
bucky ends up becoming captain america bc he is signing up for literally any & every program important enough to make him important enough to get someone to investigate steve's murder. dr erskine picked steve bc he didn't like bullies and was going to war bc he had to. if he was interviewing a bunch of soldiers, the guy who honestly went "to be truthful doc, i am here to solve the death of my childhood friend and i'll use any power it takes to make that happen" is probably his best pick if steve's not an option.
bucky has steve's canonical 'death' + waking up in 2012 except he's waking up to find out not only did steves murder never get solved, but steve's been entirely forgotten by history. he has the worlds worst fucking crashout of all time. it takes soooo much effort for them to convince him to do anything ever.
