bucky entered a suicide pact with an unwitting steve at age 6 when winnifred barnes carefully tried to explain to her only son that his best friend in the world was the kind of sick that would kill him young, so please don't get....too attached? and bucky was like, oh, yes m'am! you got it! and then mentally just decided he'd kill himself as soon as steve died 'cuz nobody else would play solitaire with him and not be annoying about it.

as time went on he realized everybody was underestimating steve and he'd probably make it a lot longer than all the adults had assumed, but he also knew steve probably wasn't going to make it to his thirties. so neither was bucky! and he lived like it. at no point did bucky ever consider not killing himself was an option.

he's never mentioned this to anyone, especially not steve, and maybe the only time it's come up was during the war in Azzano because he's a little cracked in the head at that point and he thinks its a little bad-funny that he's gonna die before steve after all that fuss.

rumlow and coulson are actually kind of the same person in terms of being incapable of viewing steve as a person because of a lifelong fixation on his historical propaganda 'self'. which makes sense because they both ended up in shield presumably because they bought into the propaganda so hard that it led them both to military careers and more specifically SHIELD careers, the organization most connected to steve.

coulson wants bucky dead because he spent his entire childhood pretending to be bucky barnes and then the winter soldier shows up and hes doing it all wrong!!! hes not being bucky right!!! and despite coulsons expertise in the subject, steve is unwilling to let him be the New Bucky and replace the defunct model. and this is bucky's fault.

rumlow wants bucky dead because he really thought he'd managed to be the New Bucky, steve had trusted him in the field, and relied on him to some extent, had seemed affable to his overtures of friendship. he'd felt really powerful for that, like he'd gotten one over on steve and everyone else. and then he sees steve with Actual Bucky and very quickly realized he had not come even close to achieving any of that. steve had babied him in the field and kept a mountain of professional boundaries between them, actually, and the comparison is making rumlow sick. he feels like he's the loser who got played and he wants to kill bucky for this because some part of him still wants to 'win' at steve so he can't kill him.

also they both figured out bucky's fucking steve at some point and that just intensified the blood lust

reading a lot of avengers 2012/2014 fanfic and noticing a particular girlboss sexism thing were, to make up for the fact that in a cast of like 45 characters, theres literally only one Girl Superhero, they have the male characters treat the women with a sort of "and god help you if she's mad" vibe that is meant to be empowering but instead is just disingenuous and sexist.

like i see a lot of fics where bucky is like "natasha is terrifying.....we must do whatever it takes to not get on her bad side! the russian spiderling is so scary!". there are a lot of fics where steve will like, 'visibly shudder' at the idea of pissing off natasha. whatever we do, don't make her mad! but neither of those things make any sense for their individual characters. steve loves pissing people off, especially people in higher authority to him. he's constantly arguing with nick fury + phillips, who are both literally his boss. and with bucky and natasha, even if you don't subscribe to my belief that bucky is Kinda Sexist (unexamined), we know bucky canonically shot through natasha to get a target when he was the winter soldier and he didn't care if she lived or died. they repeatedly fight in the movie and she is almost always running for her life from him and he is barely acknowledging her bc she is not his target.

and it takes away from what is actually there that is interesting about these characters and their established dynamics to ignore it.

The winter soldier is not scared of natasha: natasha is scared of the winter soldier, which is much more interesting. it's what allows us to see through natasha's professional mask of Femme Fatale, for her performance of constantly being one step ahead to break. this is what natasha looks like when she's scared, when she's outclassed, when she's fighting the fight anyways because it's the right thing to do. we saw a glimpse of this in the avengers movie when she's dealing with the hulk, but now we get see that when she has no backup and when there's no option to try and manipulate the threat because outside of steve there is nothing that can get through to the winter soldier. AND he's somewhat of a nightmarish reflection of the fate she escaped, the life she once lived, this is what the red room wanted to turn her into. and steve's relationship with natasha is not interesting bc hes intrinsically scared of her girlboss badbitch energy but specifically because he sees past the performance of it, recognizes her weak soft human side, and still constantly defers to her expertise because he trusts and respects her judgement. he's not scared of her: they're friends. that's what makes the relationship special.

it's really aggravating in a way i don't know how to explain. maybe the authors don't want to deal with the fact that women in the MCU barely exist and get almost no power- that the only woman superhero at the time has no superpowers. that even the strongest woman in the genre at the time is the second weakest on her team. but that's the reality of the space they're writing in. it's an interesting space to write in if you acknowledge it.

reading a historical romance novel and reflecting on the way these stories often present woke nobility for the contemporary reader. a big thing is servants. you can’t not have servants in those times but many modern readers think “but I would never have servants. it would be so weird to have servants” and in order to make the protagonists of the story more relatable they are actually friends with the servants. but flip your perspective and think of it from the side of the servants. wouldn’t it be so awful if your boss was always trying to be friends with you. a really common thing you’ll see is the woke baronet having tea in the kitchen with the servants bc he’s not like other baronets. but what if your boss wanted to hang out and talk during your lunch break every day. not so charming when you think about it that way
