what his victory does prove to me though is that the people of tamil nadu are tired of the alternating admk/dmk. they just wanted someone new. i saw some stats and even educated folks like professionals and master’s degree holders have voted for vijay. the message is clear - people have been wanting an alternative for a loooong time - and they finally got one. this is less an endorsement of tvk and more a wake-up call for dmk/admk.

tvk is still very much a dravidian party just like these two - their core ideology, at least if you wanna trust what vijay says in his theatrical speeches, is still very much aligned with the dravidian movement. national media (looking at you arnab) - are calling this “the end of dravidian politics” in tamil nadu - but that could not be further from the truth lol. tamil autonomy and self-identity is deeply embedded in the people of tn. that’s not going away anytime soon. it’s not been a separatist movement for a WHILE.

1. already owe me money

2. have begun making plans to sneak in alcohol 2 hours into me knowing them.

3. nearly knocked my damn phone out of the window by yanking on the extension cord.

4. given me a completely unsolicited and unnecessary insight into their borderline diabolic love lives (including some sex offender exes)

5. refuse to let me sleep by - 1) yapping as loud as they can with a third gremlin child they invited and 2) refusing to let me increase the fan speed to its max level because it’s “cold and loud” (these two airheads have kept the damn window open)

anyway, i shooed them away now. sort of sternly said that if they all fucked off to the third gremlin’s room - they could yap in peace and i could sleep.

oh, and also - only one of my roommate is somewhat cordial with me. the other one kinda just ignores me and the third gremlin child gives me a stink eye whenever i’m in her presence. (idfc tbh - i will fight these bitches hard if it comes to it).

i had very little time to move my stuff into my room. so i had asked my roommates if i could borrow some of theirs (really small things, mind you - like dish soap and kitchen towels). i’ve already mentioned the sleep part. the next day - these two girls blew up on me. they said i was “using shit i didn’t pay for”. i offered to pay my share for the dish soap - or buy it next month, but that wasn’t the “point” apparently. they also had an issue with the fan. they complained that it was stuffy. i pointed out that an increased speed with a window open would only reduce the stuffiness. but no - physics bows down to their whims apparently.

the also blew up on me for “not trying hard enough to be their friend”. these three pretty much talk about their exes and friends and people and situations i know nothing about - and then are shocked when i join. but very quickly - it became 2vs1, so i just tried to pacify them.

had made up mind to switch rooms by that night. dad convinced me not to so that they don’t go around spreading rumours. a sort of cordial balance has been reached - i’m just friendly w them and try to fuck off from my room as much as possible.

my roommates have informed me that they will be staying up at least till 2 to study - for 6 hours everyday. (yes, they think it is going to work). idk how. i’m not planning on staying awake past 12. i’ve never really studied after the sun goes down.

i honestly think this is the worst sort of roommates you could get. my new roommates - i’m not saying that we fit together like gloves - but she is quite respectful and sweet - which is all that’s necessary. here are some things i learned from this fiasco:

1. hostel living is NOT a 24x7 sleepover. it might feel like that for the first few days or if you have free time. but remember that it’s a shared living space. people need peace and quiet, especially if your courseload is heavy.

2. set your boundaries early. set up rules for sleep and study times. do not compromise on these two. work around with your roommates to come up with a schedule that works for everyone.

3. do not feel weird about having to share a lot of your stuff initially. (don’t be the weirdo who demands money for two bananas and a couple of drops of dish soap). give people the benefit of the doubt for the first two weeks. then see if they are freeloading off of you.

4. you are not obligated to be nice to people who are not nice to you. if you can get your point across without much noise - do it. if you can’t - make a fuss. and don’t feel ashamed about it. if someone speaks to you sarcastically - reply the same way. do not worry if you might start gossip - everyone gossips about everyone in a hostel and honestly? it lasts for a week, max.

5. that being said - don’t indulge in unnecessary gossip. share your thoughts with someone you trust - and don’t go around telling everyone everything. if you end up in a situation like mine - people will definitely ask you why you moved. be diplomatic - just say you weren’t compatible, had routine clashes and move on.

(also my parents and brother totally called this shit lol. they said there wasn’t any way these girls were staying friends past 3 months).
